Importance of Earth Science
Journal: Why might studying Earth Science be valuable?
![Page 4: Introduction to Global Science Ch. 1. Four Branches of Earth Science Match the Branch with the Picture!!! 1.Geology 2.Oceanography 3.Meteorology 4.Astronomy.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062720/56649eff5503460f94c151ca/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Ecology• Where earth science and biology
meet!!!
• Earth scientists study the solid earth, water, and the atmosphere. – These nonliving parts of earth are related
to the living parts of earth. – Example: Ecosystem

How is Earth Science Studied?
The Scientific Method– Observation– Research the topic– Form a Hypothesis– Test the Hypothesis (Experiment)– Conclusion
![Page 6: Introduction to Global Science Ch. 1. Four Branches of Earth Science Match the Branch with the Picture!!! 1.Geology 2.Oceanography 3.Meteorology 4.Astronomy.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062720/56649eff5503460f94c151ca/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

Hypothesis• An explanation for a question or a problem
that can be tested. • It is NOT a random guess!!!
• Question: How does sunlight affect plant growth?
• Example Hypothesis: An increase in sunlight will improve plant growth. – Can be phrased as an “If, then statement”– Example: If the amount of sun exposure is
increased, then plants will have an increase in growth as measured by height.

Journal
Create your own testable hypothesis.
It can be about anything school appropriate.
![Page 9: Introduction to Global Science Ch. 1. Four Branches of Earth Science Match the Branch with the Picture!!! 1.Geology 2.Oceanography 3.Meteorology 4.Astronomy.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062720/56649eff5503460f94c151ca/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Experiment• Collecting information under controlled conditions
• Control Group: part of an experiment that is a standard against which results are compared.– Receives no experimental treatment.
• Experimental Group: one condition is changed in order to observe the result
Control Experimental (Test) GroupNo Fertilizer Fertilizer
![Page 10: Introduction to Global Science Ch. 1. Four Branches of Earth Science Match the Branch with the Picture!!! 1.Geology 2.Oceanography 3.Meteorology 4.Astronomy.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062720/56649eff5503460f94c151ca/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Collect Data • Quantitative Data: numerical
– Measurements of time, temperature, height, mass, area, etc.
• Qualitative Data: descriptions
![Page 11: Introduction to Global Science Ch. 1. Four Branches of Earth Science Match the Branch with the Picture!!! 1.Geology 2.Oceanography 3.Meteorology 4.Astronomy.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062720/56649eff5503460f94c151ca/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Conclusion
• Was the hypothesis supported by the results of the experiment?
• Is more data needed?– Experiment need to be repeated several
times with similar results – Experiments need to be reviewed by other
scientists
