Aromatic essential oils have been used in ancient civilizations as perfumes in cosmetics, and for medicinal purposes. The combination of fragrant plant materials, herbs and oils are documented in most ancient civilizations.

There are written accounts of essential oil usage in ancient Africa, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Babylon and China. The Chinese Yellow Emperor Book of Internal Medicine, written in 2697 B.C. is one of the oldest surviving medical references in China, which contains information on more than three hundred plants and their properties. In addition, in ancient times, perfumed plant essences were burned at temples and holy places as offerings.

The ancient Egyptians used essential oils, potpourri, and created perfumes from aromatic plants. They used essential oils for ceremonial purposes, for embalming, in rituals, medicines, fumigation, libation and for skin care and in massage oils. The Egyptians were renowned for the use of herbal preparations and healing ointments. As the information was shared with the Greeks, and later the Romans, it spread to Europe. The Europeans were more interested in using potpourri and essences from dried flowers. They built rooms in their homes devoted to preserving the aromatic scents of flowers and dried herbs.

In literature of India, dating back to 2000 B.C., notes have documented over seven hundred botanical substances used for liturgical and therapeutic purposes. The lists include sandalwood, myrrh, cinnamon, ginger, coriander and spikenard.

The traditional use of plant extracts carries over into today’s culture. As interest returns to the interrelatedness of matter and spirit, more and more people are examining the interdependence of modern medicine and psychology. The term aromatherapy, was given in 1928 by French chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé. Later, in 1964, Dr. Jean Valnet published a compilation of research called The Practice of Aromatherapy, inspired by Gattefossé’s findings. Dr. Valnet used essential oils successfully to treat specific medical and psychiatric disorders.

In some respects, the term aromatherapy is erroneously thought to work exclusively through the sense of smell, and on the emotions. However, each aromatic essential oil has an individual combination of constituents that interact with the body’s natural chemistry in a direct manner, which in turn affects certain organs or systems as a whole.

The result of aromatherapy is very individual. No two people are affected by the essential oil properties and characteristics in the same way. The depth of healing ranging from penetrating therapeutic usage to the subtle effect of a unique fragrance will depend on the individual.

Although aromatherapy and usage of essential oils are considered an ancient practice, a person has the unique regard to incorporate essential oils in a modern approach to enhance total well being. You don’t have to work with essential oils every day to know that nature has provided us with a wealth of diverse natural components to promote healing and balance.

How is an essential oil produced? The oldest method in which

fragrant plant essences were extracted was to soak a plant in water.

However, today’s methods are based on water steam distillation and cold

pressing processing. Essential oil distillation is a method of alchemy used

to separate chemical substances. It was an invention of Greek alchemists

in the first century.

Nowadays, most essential oils are steam distilled. Raw plant

materials consisting of flowers, wood, bark, roots, leaves, peels or seeds

are put into a distillation apparatus over water. As the water is heated, the

steam passes through the raw materials vaporizing its volatile components.

The vapor of the contents flow through a coil where they condense back

into liquid form, which is then collected into a receiving unit.

Page 7: INTRODUCTION TO ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SKIN CARE AND SALON ...

Eve’s Rose Skin Care – www.naturalskin-eli.com 5

The moisture continues to evaporate from the flower or plant

materials, leaving concentrated essential oils behind. Most essential oils

are distilled in a single process.

Some flowers are more delicate and may easily be damaged by the

high heat used in steam distillation. Instead, a solvent, such as ethyl

alcohol, is used to extract the fragrant oil. The alcohol is then removed by a

second distillation, leaving behind the absolute essential oil.

Distillation is used to produce, refine, and concentrate essential oils.

The purity of the oil product will depend on the removal of certain solvents.

For the production of high quality oils, steam distillation is used more often.

Steam distillation is also administered via cold pressing – a gentle extraction

method used particularly for citrus oils. An essential oil may at times be

redistilled to enhance the purification of the product.

Essential oils have two primary pathways for entering the body –

through the skin and through inhalation. When properly diluted, the

application of essential oils to the skin may be of greater therapeutic value

since it is absorbed rapidly. Now, I must say at this point that practicing

aromatherapists discourage applying an essential oil “neat” to the skin, that

is, applying directly to the skin without a carrier oil or an oil base.

Essential oils are often mixed with a carrier oil and that carrier oil will

determine how long the essential oil will last. Since essential oils are

organic, they are easily absorbed through the pores and hair follicles of the

skin. Unlike chemical synthetics, they do not accumulate in the body to

Page 8: INTRODUCTION TO ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SKIN CARE AND SALON ...

Eve’s Rose Skin Care – www.naturalskin-eli.com 6

cause toxicity. Essential oils are excreted, expelled or metabolized three to

six hours after application, depending on the health of the body. The carrier

oil may affect the absorption rate, since some oils are heavier than others.

Since essential oils are soluble in oils and alcohol, and impart their

scent to water, they provide an excellent avenue for treatment of certain

diseases.

The oils are absorbed in the blood stream, therefore affecting the

nature of circulation, the digestive system and the endocrine systems.

They can bring warmth to the skin’s surface to provide pain relief and

reduce inflammation. Some oils, such as hyssop, will have a balancing

effect on the circulatory system and holistically to reduce blood pressure.

Essential oils used through inhalation enable the stimulation or

suppression effect on the respiratory tract, as desired. For example, the

use of camphor and eucalyptus oils improve bronchial secretions and

reduce bronchial spasms. Due to the fact the extracted oils are inhaled

directly by the lungs increases absorption into the blood stream faster.

Aromatic baths and massage uses the methods of aroma healing to

enhance feelings of well being. The essential oils administered through

massage stimulate the lymphatic drainage system, relax the muscles and

relieve stress. It is pampering and nurturing. When applied in a warm bath,

the scents interact with the brain’s limbic system to relax the mind as well as

the body. Inhalation of a relaxing oil prior to going to bed can promote

better sleep by calming the nervous system. Sandalwood, ylang ylang and

lavender are popular for stimulating serotonin production.

Throughout history, essential oils have been known for their powerful

influence on the emotions and state of mind. Additionally, they have been

esteemed for their capacity to enhance beauty and pleasure. With the

Page 9: INTRODUCTION TO ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SKIN CARE AND SALON ...

Eve’s Rose Skin Care – www.naturalskin-eli.com 7

simple application of essential oils, they present a variety of advantages for

healing and body care. The effect of an essential oil depends on an

assortment of factors: i.e., how it is applied, how much is applied or what

previous associations are attached to the aroma. It is also affected by the

inability to smell.

In all research of aromatherapy, it is advised to use essential oils

with safety and precaution. It is advised some oils are not be used or

ingested because they may prove potentially dangerous, especially if they

have not been properly tested. Those oils should be avoided for obvious

reasons.

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant constituents possessing

potent medicinal qualities. Each one has a different effect on the body and

mind. Depending on the constitution of the person, some oils may

stimulate, rejuvenate or invigorate. Other oils may sedate and relax.

Additionally, other essential oils can be skin irritants, phototoxic or abortive.

Therefore, it is advised to understand the properties of essential oils in

preparation for usage. As with all medicine, keep essential oils out of the

reach of children.

Particular caution is suggested for women during pregnancy. There

are some essential oils that are definitely not used. Essentials oils are best

avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy. They may stimulate

contractions, which could potentially cause spontaneous abortion.

Aniseed, hyssop and myrrh are suggested to avoid.

The best method to use essential oils is in a diluted form. There are

a few exceptions to using an essential oil undiluted, or applied neat.

Lavender and tea tree are exceptions. If a person is unsure about an

essential oil property, it is advisable to contact a health care professional

before using the oil to determine its safety.

Essential oils offer a therapeutic way to maintain good health, enjoy

beauty and peace of mind. Taking into consideration individual need, or the

long tradition of usage for physical, spiritual or emotional maladies,

essential oil usage confirm that mind and matter are mutually enfolded in

the sustenance of health and well being.

Cultures throughout the world have been obsessed with the power

of smell. People are involved in smell with every breath. With each breath,

the olfactory sites in the nasal cavity help to send energy throughout the

cells of the body. The sense of smell is very precise. As the lungs inhale

and exhale, the sense of smell is active. The odor molecules ascend into

the nasal cavity behind the bridge of the nose, where they are absorbed by

the mucosa, firing impulses to the brain’s smell center. This pathway allows

the olfactory stimulus to be detected and interpreted by the brain. When the

olfactory nerve senses a smell, it signals the cerebral cortex and sends a

message to the body’s limbic system. The sense of smell triggers images

and emotions of times gone by, creating a nostalgic reaction in the moment.

Page 11: INTRODUCTION TO ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SKIN CARE AND SALON ...

Eve’s Rose Skin Care – www.naturalskin-eli.com 9

Smells usually fall into a few categories: floral, musty, minty, acrid

resinous or foul. Scientists have known that smells can influence people

biologically. Musk, for instance, provides hormonal changes in women who

smell it. Biologically, people need only eight molecules of a substance to

trigger an impulse in a nerve ending. Whereas, forty nerve endings are

stimulated before the sense of smell is activated. In order for something to

be detected by the sense of smell, it must be airborne. Smell is one of the

fundamental elements of how one perceives the environment.

Page 12: INTRODUCTION TO ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SKIN CARE AND SALON ...

Scientists have reported that the effect of pheromones on our

emotions are linked to hormonal activity of the hypothalamus, pituitary and

reproductive glands. It is noted pheromones play a key role in

communication between people. There are two types of pheromones:

signal pheromones, which cause short-term changes in behavior and

primer pheromones, which evoke lasting changes in the body.1

Pheromones also seem to play an important role in social and sexual

behavior. (Kohl, et al. 311-312)

Pheromones are a chemical substance or messenger secreted by

an animal or insect for the purpose of influencing the behavior of others. It

comes from the Greek word “pherein” which means to carry, and “hormon”

which means to excite.2 (Kohl, et al. 311) Faint smells from childhood can

linger in the memory centers waiting to emerge, therefore pheromones and

fragrance may influence the mind, mood or body.

Traditionally, common usages of essential oils for aroma healing

range from personal perfumes, lotions, soaps, massage oils, baths to

sachets; potpourri, curative potions and candle scents. Today, aroma

healing is extended in using essential oils for gastro-intestinal concerns,

nervous and immune system disorders.

They relieve mental exhaustion, fatigue, anxiety and stress. I will

again stress that you do not use a pure essential oil undiluted on the skin,

use with caution of pregnant, because you have to remember, plant

extracts are medicine.

If a person is unsure about an essential oil property, it is advisable to

contact a health care professional before using the oil to determine its

safety.

Given the correct balance of essential oils, you will be able to find

what works and use the vast spectrum of endless combinations to bring

healing adjustments to the mind, body and spirit.

Essential oils are readily available from many health food and

aromatherapy stores, via mail-order, and via companies that have Web

sites. Although readily available, the quality of essential oils from one

vendor to another can vary drastically whether you buy them locally or

not. Additionally, the price charged is not necessarily an indication of the

quality of the vendor’s oils.

Poor quality oils (oils that have been distilled from poor crops, have

been handled improperly, are old, etc.) or adulterated oils (oils that have

chemicals or other oils added to them) lack the therapeutic benefit of

good quality oils. Additionally essential oils that have been adulterated

can cause harmful side effects, or at best provide only minimal

therapeutic benefit.

Below are tips that can help you select vendors of pure, high quality

essential oils:

Watch out for words such as “fragrance oil,” “nature identical oil,”

or “perfume oil.” These words indicate that what you see is not a

pure, single essential oil. Many vendors label fragrance oils (that

can be combinations of essential oils and chemicals or just plain

chemicals) and perfume oils as “aromatherapy.” Countless

vendors of strictly fragrance oils have written me to ask for

advertising of their “aromatherapy oils.” Beginners need to watch

out for these vendors who inaccurately use the alternative

medicine term aromatherapy for their own sales gain.

Page 21: INTRODUCTION TO ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SKIN CARE AND SALON ...

Eve’s Rose Skin Care – www.naturalskin-eli.com 19

The term “pure essential oil” is overused in the aromatherapy

industry. Pure essential oils can be distilled from poor quality

crops, be sitting in someone’s inventory or on a store’s shelves

for years, be stored in a way that damages the oils, or be

mishandled by vendors so that oils are accidentally mixed during

bottling. So, don't get overly impressed by a vendor that labels

their oils as "pure."

Avoid oils that are sold in clear glass bottles as the clear glass

can allow light to damage the essential oils. Instead, purchase

oils that are stored in amber (brown) or other dark colored glass

bottles. Some vendors sell oils in aluminum bottles. Aluminum is

said to be acceptable if the inside of the bottle is lined.

Avoid buying essential oils that have a rubber eyedropper bulb in

the top because the oil can dissolve the rubber dropper and

become contaminated.

Seek out vendors that promote that they test all their oils, supply

samples that you can try before you buy, and that give you

confidence in their knowledge (often by providing detailed

information on each oil they sell and provide other aromatherapy

information that instills confidence).
