WHAT is a Connection Broker?
A connection broker lies at the heart of any hosted desktop deployment, physical or virtual, and is the key component for assigning resources to end users and controlling the end-user experience.
It helps to tie all the data centerpieces together, and controls who can access what and how.
![Page 7: Introduction to Connection Broker Technology](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052318/587fad2b1a28ab107e8b4b3d/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
In desktop virtualization, a connection broker is a software program that allows the end user to connect to an available desktop.
The connection broker performs tasks that include:Validating the user name and providing a connection for the user
Providing the ability for the user to connect to a specific virtual machine (VM), blades, workstations, or terminal services
Providing the ability for the user to access multiple VM pools. (If the user is permitted to access a variety of pools, the broker prompts the user to select a pool at login time.)
Providing insight into the usage levels of the system
Handling reassignment of a virtual machine when a user disconnects

Support Mixed Virtual and Physical Environments
Manage a wide range of operating systems, physical and virtual desktops, and display protocols in one centralized application – a complete solution for a unified hosted desktop deployment.
Use best platform and protocol for each use case: VMware, Citrix, Microsoft, etc. Mix and match hypervisorsChoose from a variety of protocols such as RDP, HP RGS, PCoIP, etc. Utilize both on-prem and cloud hosting platforms
![Page 12: Introduction to Connection Broker Technology](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052318/587fad2b1a28ab107e8b4b3d/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Retain Investment in Existing Infrastructure
Integrate seamlessly with your authentication systems, SSL VPNs, syslog server, load balancers, etc.
Leverage your existing investment rather than replace it.
![Page 13: Introduction to Connection Broker Technology](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052318/587fad2b1a28ab107e8b4b3d/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Risk-free and Easy Migration Between Solutions Independent connection brokers typically support the widest range of hosting solutions. And, because they are provided by companies that focus only on the brokering aspect of a hosted desktop solution, they are better at keeping up with new technologies in the data center.
Look for solutions that allow you to try out new technologies as they come to market, using them side-by-side until you can seamlessly migrate, as needed.
![Page 14: Introduction to Connection Broker Technology](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052318/587fad2b1a28ab107e8b4b3d/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Support a Wider Range of Users and Use Cases Independent connection brokers are designed to integrate different levels of solutions into a single management layer, from Remote Desktop Services, to VDI, to virtualized workstations, to high-power dedicated workstations.
You can minimize the risk of under/over building your environment and better match end-user needs.
![Page 15: Introduction to Connection Broker Technology](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052318/587fad2b1a28ab107e8b4b3d/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Avoid High Licensing Costs of Full VDI Stack Minimize the risk of vendor lock-in and being “stuck” with rising licensing fees, support & maintenance costs.
A vendor neutral solution is not tied to a particular stack, so it gives you the flexibility to mix and match technology
