Weekend Course Screen This intensive two-day course is designed to offer a practical, hands-on, industry-standard introduction to the Canon 5D Mark II camera. Canon 5D is a revolutionary full-frame DSLR camera which is very popular among the professional film and video community. It can achieve a film quality look in a compact package and at a relatively low cost. You will have the opportunity to get hands-on camera experience and practice including transcoding media, preparing for non-linear editing and syncing audio. WHO IS THE COURSE FOR? This course is aimed at people already employed or learning in a film and/or TV shooting environment, for example, as a camera person or assistant camera person. However, the course is also open to anyone interested in this technology and may be of particular interest to stills photographers looking to move into video. During the course you will learn: how to navigate the camera controls how to work with and choose lenses to record audio with DSLR to control light indoors and outdoors tips for better footage ways to edit and share your final footage ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Students should have a working knowledge of Mac OSX or similar. This intensive two-day course is designed to offer a practical, hands-on, industry-standard introduction to the Canon 5D Mark II camera.

COURSE OUTLINE

This intensive two-day short course is designed to build your knowledge of the workings of the Canon 5D Mark II camera for video. You will also learn how to transcode Canon 5D Mark II media files for post-production.

By the end of the course you will have an understanding of:

• the Canon 5D Mark II camera, including menus, frame rates, resolution and an overview of Canon 5D Mark II use in the film and TV industry

• setting up a DSLR camera to shoot video

• setting ISO and getting the correct exposure

• lenses and the Mattebox• using a video monitor• recording sound for the Canon 5D

Mark II

The Course Leader will conduct examples for the group. You will take turns to practise using the Canon 5D Mark II.

You will shoot your own material to use in the course. You will be encouraged to try different shooting situations to learn from real experience and to troubleshoot live situations.

On day two, you will work with the media in a post-production environment, preparing the media for non-linear editing.

The Course Leader will work with the group to ensure learning support is provided throughout the course.

COURSE LEADERS

Ray Tallan

Ray has been in charge of the camera department at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for the past four years, overseeing the cinematography training.

He has completed his REDucation training with RED in Los Angeles and will implement the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s transition into HD with the acquisition of the RED Epic.

Ray has experience in working on 16mm, SD, HD and, for the last three years, the RED One.

Recent projects include the award-winning short film Laid Off, independent short The Things We Do (Raindance 2012), music promo for The Unsinkable Boxer track, When I Write the Book (American Songwriter) and visuals for multi-media performance Biding Time.

Ray also works as an editor and has cut documentaries, promotional and short films. He has worked with Academy Award nominee Seamus McGarvey on a promo for Sharleen Spiteri.

PREPARING FOR YOUR COURSE

This course does not require you to do any prior preparation. If you would like to take the footage you have shot away, please bring a Mac formatted external hard drive.
