Let’s Talk About Books! The Parts of a Book (for 3 rd & 4 th Graders)

  • 1. Lets TalkAbout Books!
  • 2. For example, the outside part of a book is called the COVER. It protects the books inside parts.
  • 3. The FRONT COVER also hasimportant information on it.
  • 4. The FRONT COVER hasimportant information on it. Like the TITLE of the book.
  • 5. The FRONT COVER hasimportant information on it. Like the TITLE of the book. And the name of the books AUTHOR.
  • 6. As well as the ILLUSTRATOR; theperson who drew the pictures inthe book.
  • 7. Another important part of a book is the SPINE.
  • 8. A books SPINE works the same wayyour spine does. It holds the book together.
  • 9. The SPINE of a book also has important information on it!
  • 10. Like the TITLE of the book!
  • 11. And the name of the AUTHOR!
  • 12. And if its a library book, the SPINE willhave a special label on it with aCALL NUMBER!
  • 13. A CALL NUMBER is the address of the book. It tells you exactly where the book lives on the shelf!
  • 14. Just like your address tells someoneexactly where you live on your street. = 235
  • 15. Lets learn how to read a books CALL NUMBER.
  • 16. Knowing how to read a books CALLNUMBER is important because FICTIONBOOKS and NON-FICTION BOOKS have different kinds of CALL NUMBERS!

  • 18. The first part of a books CALL NUMBER tells you if the book is aFICTION book, or if it lives in the NON- FICTION section of the library. 328.5 F E DIA DIA DIA

  • 29. NON-FICTION BOOKS work the same way, except that they are filed NUMBERICALLY FIRST. This book will be in the 300s area of the 328.5 328.5 NON-FICTION SECTION, numerically filed from the smallest number to the greatest number. DIA 327.8 328 328.2 328.5 328.5 328.5 329

  • 31. You can find ANY book in the library by using its CALL NUMBER.

  • 33. Say you want to read Artemis Fowl but you dont know the authorsname or what the CALL NUMBER is.
  • 34. Type the books TITLE into thecomputers search box and click the TITLE button. Artemis Fowl Glenoaks Elementary
  • 35. The computer will show you if ourlibrary has a copy of Artemis Fowl.
  • 36. Just below the books TITLE, you will find the CALL NUMBER.
  • 37. The first part of the CALL NUMBER starts with the letter F. F Remember: FICTION BOOKS have CALL NUMBERS that start with a letter.
  • 38. Artemis Fowl is a FICTION book for older students. We know this because the CALLNUMBER has an F in it. The F stands for Fiction.

  • 40. We now know the general areaof the library where we can find the book Artemis Fowl. But how do we know EXACTLY where it lives?
  • 41. We go back to the books CALL NUMBER! REMEMBER: the second part of the CALL NUMBER stands for what?
  • 42. The second part of a CALL NUMBER is usually the first three letters of the AUTHORS LAST NAME. COL = COLFER (Author Eoin Colfers last name)
  • 43. Artemis Fowl will be in the C sectionwith authors who also have last names that start with the letter C.

  • 45. Once you find the C section inFICTION, look for the book with the matching CALL NUMBER. HINT: The CALL NUMBERS will be in ALPHABETICAL ORDER!
  • 46. Look carefully! There are many books in our library whose authorslast names start with the letters COL.
  • 47. Those books will all have the same EXACT call number!
  • 48. Since FICTION BOOKS are filed ALPHABETICALLY by the authors last name, books by Eoin Colfer will come BEFORE booksby Suzanne Collins, Tim Collins & Carlo Collodi.
  • 49. Here it is! You found Artemis Fowl by using thecomputer and the books CALL NUMBER!
  • 50. Please make sure that when youput a book back on the shelf, theSPINE of the book is facing you!
