Introduction to Ayurveda & Panchakarma

The aim of this one day seminar/ workshop is to provide participants with an understanding of how Happiness, Health & Harmony in everyday life depends on the intelligent co-ordination of the four parts of life: Atman (Spirit or Awareness), Manas (the mind), Indriyas (the senses) and Sharira (the body). Ayurveda, the science of life (ayu means life and veda, science or knowledge), is not just a medicinal approach to health but is a complete philosophy of life, which understands that the non-material components of our lives - our consciousness, mind, thoughts and emotions - animate and direct our more physical parts.

Dr Joshi will explain how the three intelligent principles or Doshas of Vata (movement ), Pitta (transformation), and Kapha (cohesion), can be brought to their constitutional level of health by means of diet, lifestyle, medicinal herbs and various treatments, especially Panchakarma.

Panchakarma (Rejuvination), is an integral part of Ayurveda, where the basis of the disease process is eradicated by removing ama (toxic residue of undigested food) and mala (natural metabolic waste products) and restoring the balance to the doshas. This balance provides a blanket immunity to the mind/body to enable the individual to withstand infections, food allergies, disturbances in the environment and the general stresses of life.

The practical Pranayama workshop will provide course participants with the experience of how simple breathing techniques can help to restore the flow of life energy, increase vitality, promote health and calm the mind and emotions.

The Meditation workshop will build on this effect, allowing participants to experience how connecting with Awareness or Consciousness itself and coming to inner peace and stillness, promotes health and wellbeing.

‘To achieve health & wellbeing,

freedom from stress and disturbance in the mind and body,

follow the path of intelligent action seated in Awareness itself.’ Foundation for Harmonious Living

‘Ayurveda is the knowledge that indicates the appropriate and inappropriate,

happy or sorrowful conditions of living, what is auspicious or inauspicious

for longevity, as well as the measure of life itself.’ Charaka Samhita
