Introduction

The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) is leading the global movement to transform

our buildings and communities in ways that help people thrive. IWBI’s WELL Building Standard

(WELL) is focused exclusively on the ways that buildings and communities, and everything in

them, can improve our comfort, drive better choices, and generally enhance, not compromise,

our health and well-being. IWBI engages, convenes and mobilizes a global community through

the provision of the WELL AP credential, the development of educational resources and

advocacy for policies that promote health and well-being everywhere.

IWBI also supports the active and ongoing evolution of WELL to make sure the latest in

scientific research, building science and design practices are made available to our community.

That aim is what led to the graduation and launch of WELL v2 out of pilot stage.

We’re committed to providing project teams with the tools and resources they need to

navigate their transition from the WELL v2 pilot to WELL v2. The WELL v2 Skybridge is a

compilation of the approved equivalent language between the WELL v2 pilot and WELL v2 and

is intended to assist projects with the following:

• WELL v2 pilot projects have the option of utilizing any of the approved WELL v2 feature

language detailed in Table 1 in place of the corresponding pilot feature.

• WELL v2 pilot projects that are upgrading to WELL v2 can utilize Table 2, which details

the WELL v2 pilot feature language that can be substituted for WELL v2 feature

language. Some projects may find the flexibility of using approved WELL v2 pilot feature

language helpful when upgrading to WELL v2.

General guidance for using the WELL v2 Skybridge

1. When a project implements a WELL Skybridge feature or part substitution, it must make

the full substitution indicated by the row in the table, including adopting any new

verification methods (e.g., on-site performance verification), where applicable.

2. The substitution of feature language does not change precondition or optimization

assignments or WELL Core guidance in the rating system being used by the project. For

example, although pilot feature C15.1 (Emergency Preparedness – Develop Emergency

Preparedness Plan) is now a precondition in WELL v2 (now C03.1), it will remain an

optimization for pilot projects, regardless of whether they use the WELL v2 pilot or

WELL v2 feature language.

3. If a feature is not included in the WELL Skybridge tables, the language for that feature is

not deemed equivalent between the WELL v2 pilot and WELL v2.

4. Use of substitutions through the WELL Skybridge does not change the point value

assigned to a feature. In cases where parts in either the WELL v2 pilot or WELL v2 use

tiered scoring (i.e., there are a variable number of points for a feature), the table will

provide guidance on how many points are required or will result from using the

substitution.

5. Project teams must indicate that they are making use of the WELL Skybridge tool at the

time of submission for preliminary Documentation Review as part of their

documentation submission in the WELL digital platform. This note must also indicate

which features in the documentation submission are subject to WELL Skybridge

language.

6. WELL Crosswalks can be used in conjunction with the WELL Skybridge substitution

guidance. Projects must be certified under the crosswalk-related rating system in order

to receive credit for features listed in the crosswalk.

7. Published AAPs and equivalencies can be used in conjunction with WELL Skybridge

substitution guidance.
