Health care can broadly be divided into modern (conventional, orthodox, Western or allopathic) and traditional (indigenous, complementary, alternative or integrative). The former is clearly defined, with minor regional variations in its underlying philosophy and clinical methods while traditional medicine is a concept that comprises a range of long-standing and still evolving practices based on diverse beliefs and theories. Bodeker and Burford suggested the term “traditional, complementary and alternative medicine” (TCAM) as a more appropriate term to describe such traditional therapies globally (Changli-Xue, 2008). Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (TCAM) has experienced exponential growth in recent years across many countries, including Indonesia.Empirical studies have identified high public use of CAM in Canada (Wiles and Roosenberg, 2001) and Australia (McLennan et al, 2001). The use of CAM also varies across Asian ethnic groups with around 55% to 72% of Chinese and Vietnamese populations having used CAM in their lifetime (Ahn et al, 2006). There is also a trend towards increasing numbers of General Practitioners (GPs) providing CAM in their daily practice in Australia (Pirrota et al, 2002; Adams, 2004), UK (Thomas et al, 2001), and Germany (Schimidt et al, 2001). Meanwhile, in Indonesia the number of people using traditional medicine increased from 27.57% in 1995 to 49,53% in 2010 (Riskesda, 2010). Moreover, the trading value of herbal medicine in Indonesia reached 4 billion Rupiahs per year (Depkes RI, 2010). Although there are many positive signs about traditional and alternative medicine usages in Indonesia, there are also challenges facing the use of such medicines. The Minister of Health of Indonesia announced that there were 12 hospitals and 60 primary health cares in Indonesia in 2011 which provide complementary and alternative medicine services, especially herbal medicine and acupuncture clinics (Suardana, 2011). This identified that GPs and other health care providers should work together to prove the evidence of herbal medicine and to increase the acceptance of herbal medicine in the health service setting. Thisintegration should become a reasonable optionwhich meansthe essential quality for each TCAM modality can be demonstrated. INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION This International conference aims to: 1. Raise awareness among conventional GPs, TCAM practitioners and community regarding evidence-based TCAM practices, 2.
