• First steps in 5.1 in public radio broadcast have been made in production

• Broadcast-Production-Studios are usually equipped with Surround-Sound facilities since some years:Production Consoles, Audio-Workstations, Effects

• meeting at BR in Munic in may 2003• Decision to test and demonstrate the

functionality of multichannel service for radio • Technical tests together with IRT during

Summer 2003 • public presentation and first "on air" trials

by BR and WDR during IFA Berlin 2003



5.1-Transmissions for test purposes

• Sep. 2003 - Sep. 2005:public transmission of test programs:

• WDR: 1h-Loop with demo-samples of own productions, music and drama for nearly 24h a day

• BR: 2h-simulcast-transmission in BR4 Klassikevery two weeks during nighttime

• Possibility for testing of transmission and receiving equipment

Digital Video Broadcast (Satellite)• audio coding:

Dolby-Digital 5.1, "AC-3" data rate: 448 kBit/s

• simulcast: AC-3 - Data stream together with main stereo radio transmission

• The market is opened by home-cinema accompanied by high quality 5.1-audio media like SACD and DVD-A

Multichannel in Radio-Continuity

Simulcast (Stereo und 5.1) means:• At the same time two separate program-signals

have to be controlled by the operators• Priority definition is necessary for the two paths

concerning level-metering and sound-monitoring• Low disturbance of normal operation

• what we still need is to give a lot of informationabout the system and the new possibilities→ to receiver manufacturers→ to program-managers and producers→ to our listeners

"Stand alone" DVB-S - receivers for radio audio only operation are not yet available:- easy to use - without separate display

→ 2 meetings with manufacturers of DVB-S-Equipment

→ B/MCAT - Paper: guidelines for multichannel-audio-receivers(December 2005)
