Patient advocacy and professional development through physician leadership

2016 Legislative SessionLSMS Governmental Affairs tracked a total of 157 pieces of legislation for the

2016 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. The Council on Legislation took a support position on 28 bills, an oppose position on 38 bills and a neutral position on 91 bills.

Of special note, Senate Bill 187 which would have expanded the scope of practice for APRN’s, removing the requirement to maintain a collaborative practice agree-ment with a physician was resubmitted. LSMS had an overwhelming response from members in response to the call to action, with over 2000 emails over the course of the legislative session on this particular bill. After several delays and stalling tactics, physi-cians were victorious at stopping this bill, proving that physicians must stand united and become involved on these issues that impact their patients.

JPF expands its humanitarian mission to the States of North Carolina and South Carolina

The Jefferson Physicians’ Foundation (JPF) is a nationally well-known, trusted, and established nonprofit that is led by the vision of Dr. Carlos Rodriguez-Fierro. “With the belief that the role of a physician is to promote and facilitate their patients’ sus-tainable well-being, we strive to focus on treatment as much as prevention for every single public health intervention we invest on.” Furthermore, “given that research has shown the cost-effec-tiveness of investing in prevention efforts, I encourage individu-als and families to get vaccinated against influenza, to talk openly with their physicians about other ways of prevention, and to follow healthful lifestyles that include nutrition and exercise.”

Joining Dr. Rodriguez-Fierro in the leadership are Dr. Neil Wolfson serving as Vice President, Dr. Mohammed Suleman as Secretary-Treasurer, and Dr. Robert McCord as Executive Director. Members at Large are: Dr. Gregory N. Sossaman, JPMS President; Dr. Pablo J. Labadie, JPMS Vice President; Dr. Ralph P. Katz, JPMS Immediate Past President; Dr. Robert J. Chugden, Rufus P. Cressend, CPA, Armand “A.J.” Duvio, Jr., and David R. Sherman, J.D.

JPF conducts health promotion initiatives targeting indi-viduals and families that often do not have access to quality healthcare due to language barriers, lack of health insurance, and inability to qualify for government sponsored programs. In light of these health inequities, JPF programs provide bilingual, multicultural healthcare education, advocacy, referrals, and counseling.

JPF congratulates Dr. Robert McCord as its new elected Executive Director. Also, appreciates and wishes the best for Ana De la Garza, MBA, who worked with JPF since 2007 and became the Executive Director in 2014. As a public health economist her career has focused on the power of social math combining cost-benefit analyses and return on investment. Therefore, she has led the Foundation to become a multi-cultural and bilingual pro-gram providing integrated health services that are empowering and sustainable for the community. She maximized the power of radio and social media outlets to raise awareness, dispel myths, and promote health. Under her leadership, the Foundation was able to expand the number of communities served through a network of new partnerships. Collaborations were developed to effectively and efficiently coordinate clinics in underserved areas with uninsured populations. In theory and in practice, Ana believes that “a holistic effort in prevention is needed in every activity that involves public health in order to achieve health eq-uity. Raising awareness, educating and learning from communi-ties, and bringing access to services to vulnerable populations is the most cost-effective way to bridge the gap between surviving and thriving at the same time as we eliminate intergenerational health disparities.”

The JPF excellent work would not be possible without the

hard work of a passionate Board of Directors, the help of a dedicated team of physician volunteers, and over 30 organiza-tions including the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, CDC, JPMS, and HAMAL. During 2015 and 2016, JPF has expanded services and locations of our cancer awareness programs and support group activities by holding meetings at churches to meet the needs of individuals in Louisiana (New Orleans, Algiers, Marrero, Metairie, and Ken-ner), South Carolina (Greenwood), and North Carolina (Ashe-ville, Hendersonville, and Weaverville).JPF is pleased to collaborate once again with the CDC and HMA promoting uptake of the influenza vaccination during the 2016-2017 flu season. We are proud to report the results during the 2015-2016 flu campaign: • In collaboration with our Louisiana community partners, JPF

conducted 6 health fairs in the Metropolitan area of New Or-leans where we delivered over 500 flu vaccines. As in previous years, the Verbo Church Annual Health Fair, was the main flu clinic. Other locations included the Consulate of Honduras and other churches concerned with the wellbeing of their congregations.

• Additionally, JPF developed a new network of partners in the States of North Carolina and South Carolina, delivering over 200 flu vaccines.

JPMS members, potential members, medical students, and other providers are invited to become involved with the Jefferson Physicians’ Foundation.• Volunteer in the JPF program regularly or just once to experi-

ence what one physician volunteer states “allows you to just treat appreciative patients.”

• Donate in-kind items and services.• Serve on the JPF Board of Directors.• Make a monetary donation (your donation is tax-deductible).

We look forward to having more physicians join our team in the future. For more information call (504) 444-5883.
