Theco-domainsarea"typo"-Domain,asmanypeopletypee.g.microsoft.coatthebrowserinsteadofmicrosoft.comormicrosoft.co.uk.Trademarkholderandbigcompaniesmustbeawareofthis"typo"-effectandshouldprotecttheirtrademarks,productsandnamesalsoatco-domains.

Thenotion"co"alsofrequentlyusedasasecond-leveldomainwithinothercountry-codedomains,inwhichregistrants(usuallycompanies)mayregistersecond-leveldomainsoftheform.co.xx,wherexxistheccTLD.Indonesia(.co.id),Israel(.co.il),UnitedKingdom(.co.uk),NewZealand(.co.nz),Japan(.co.jp),SouthKorea(.co.kr)andCookIslands(.co.ck)areexamples.Someothercountrycodesuse"com"instead,suchasAustralia(.com.au),Mexico(.com.mx)andTaiwan(.com.tw);thisincludesColombiaitself,whichuses.com.co.

Aroundtheyear2000whenmanycountry-codedomainswerebeingremarketedasworldwidegenericdomains,therewassometalkofallowingsecond-levelregistrationsinco-domainsforregistrantsworldwideinordertocapitalizeonitssimilaritytotheacronymfortheword"company"andasashortenedversionofotherco

untry-codesasnotedabove.However,theColombianCouncilofStateprohibitedUniversidaddelosAndesfromdoingso,andregistrationremainslimitedtothird-leveldomainsandtoColombianregistrants.

OnAugust13,2009,viaapublicprocurementprocess,theColombianMinistryofCommunicationsconcededthepromotion,administration,andtechnicaloperationoftheco-domainsforaperiodof10yearstoaneworganization.

Thenewmanagementofco-domainswillintroduceco-domainsatthesecondlevelandstartwithanSunrisePeriodbetweenAprilandJune2010.

EligibilitytoparticipateintheGlobalSunrisewillbelimitedtoholdersoftrademarksthat:1)wereregisteredandwereinfullforceandeffectonorbefor

eJuly30,2008;2)areregisteredinatrademarkofficeorregistrythatcorrespondstoastateorentitydescribedintheWIPOStandardST.3code;and3)fullycomplywithanyandallotherspecifiedtermsandconditionsintheco-domainsSunrisePolicy.

Applicationswillnotbegrantedonafirst-comefirst-servedbasis,butratherwillbecollectedthroughthefinaldateofGlobalSunrise.Intheeventthatthereismorethanoneentityapplyingforthesamedomainname,witheachofthemhavecorrespondingtrademarks,thenamewillgotoauction.

PleasenotethatifyouhaveaColombiantrademark,youwillbeentitledtoapplyearlierforregistration.

InordertopreventthetypeofsystemicfraudthatoccurredduringcertainpreviousTLDlaunches,itisutmostimportancethatallrightsclaimedbytrademarkownersduringtheSunriseProcessgothroughastrictvalidationprocesstoensurethatthetrademarkownersactuallyhavetherightstheyclaimtheyhave.Thisincludestheneedfortrademarkownerstosubmitcertifieddocumentationsupportingtheirintellectualpropertyrightsincaseswheresuchrightscannotbevalidatedbyanofficialonlinedatabasesponsoredbythenationaltrademarkoffice.

Deloitte,astheindependent?Validation/VerificationAgent?willverifyeveryapplication.Thisimportantadditionalstepintheassignmentprocedurewillmakesurethatonlyrightfulownerswillreceiveaco-domainsatthesecondlevel.

TheValidation/VerificationAgentisgenerallytaskedtogiveanopiniononwhethertheinformationcontainedinanapplicationmeetstherequirementslaiddownintheco-domainsSunrisePolicy.Thisopinionwillbemadebasedoninformationcontainedintheapplication,aswellasotherdocumentaryevidencethatmayberequiredinaccordancewiththePolicy.
