EuroPAWS (the European Public Awareness of Science and Technology) aims to highlight the potential for science across all genres of television and new media in Europe. Its flagship events are the annual European Science TV and New Media Festival and Awards, but it also engages in European level projects with specific goals, e.g. to develop new TV drama involving science and engineering and to highlight policy issues relating to science on television and new media. We like to point up innovations each year, of course. But we are also grateful to the supporters who have remained faithful to the evolving event, as well as to new ones who have joined this year. There is growing interest within Portugal both in terms of proposing TV and New Media Productions for the festival and in participating generally, as well as in dissemination activities. To have a Portuguese keynote speaker is a very appropriate first for us, in fact adding a cross-cultural touch to an international science theme, the International Year of Light. That this Year was invented by one of our new supporters this year (the European Physical Society) adds an extra buzz to that session. Another big event of the past year features strongly in our event; the extraordinary mission Rosetta to land on a comet. There were TV and New Media entries in 5 categories on different aspects of Rosetta and its lander Philae, and we have echoed this popularity in the theme of our Awards evening keynote talk and discussion, where we welcome from outside Portugal a leading ESA scientist and a BBC representative with a rather intriguing title.

As well as thanking all our contributors, supporters, juries and associates, I would like to take the opportunity to recognize the vision of both Ciencia Viva in Lisbon and EuroScience, who have a multitude of projects in their agenda but have seen fit to devote great effort in bringing our annual festival and awards to a new level.

INTRODUCTION FROM THE FESTIVAL ORGANISERS

This is a landmark year as the European Science TV and New Media festival and awards are finally combined in a single event in Lisbon. We are delighted on several levels; first because the three organizations who worked together on the Awards evening in Lisbon since 2012 are now pulling together on the larger enterprise - an event which brings together from across Europe the best in Science Television and New Media with a drive from Europe’s scientists to communicate via this unique audio-visual medium. It is also exciting that the City of Lisbon has associated with the project and created the possibility of a marvelous location for the event at the São Jorge Theatre. This blend of Portuguese and European identity for the event is something we all cherish and aspire to develop.

Another development this year is equally rewarding. It is the expansion of the Europe-wide participation in the project to include three excellent centres of science communication as associates of the festival. We have for long valued highly our good relationship with the broadcasters, scientists and producers across Europe, but the development of new categories of audio-visual over the past year or so has catalysed a fresh wave of interest in other domains. The Glasgow City of Science participated in 2014 in our pioneering of the Young Jury Prize, and they are welcomed this year as an associate of the Festival and Awards. Universcience in Paris were struck by the variety and innovation in the initiatives being developed for the 2015 Festival, and we are equally pleased that they have joined us as associates. And then our agenda caught the imagination of the German whom we are also delighted to welcome on board.

Para além dos novos aderentes, não podemos deixar de agradecer a todos aqueles que, ao longo dos anos, têm continuado a conceder-nos o seu apoio. Em Portugal, o interesse pelo European Science TV and New Media Festival tem vindo a crescer, o que se reflecte no número de produção apresentadas, tanta na área de TV como de Novos Media, e na divulgação que o Festival tem merecido. Este ano temos, pela primeira vez, um conferencista português que irá abordar um tema global, o Ano Internacional da Luz - por coincidência uma iniciativa de outro dos nossos apoiantes, a Sociedade Europeia de Física. Há um outro evento científico do ano passado que vai estar em foco no nosso Festival: a extraordinária missão Rosetta que, pela primeira vez, conseguiu fazer aterrar uma sonda num cometa. Houve produções apresentadas a concurso este ano sobre a missão Rosetta-Philae em cinco das categorias de TV e Novos Media e este foi também o tema que escolhemos para a conferência e para o debate do nosso segundo dia, quando serão entregues os Prémios Viva. O painel de discussão conta com um dos responsáveis científicos da Agência Espacial Europeia e com um representante da BBC que possui um título bastante intrigante.

Além de agradecer a todos os nossos colaboradores, apoiantes, jurados e associados, quero aproveitar esta ocasião para louvar a visão da Ciência Viva e de EuroScience que, apesar da quantidade de projectos que têm nas suas agendas, reuniram todos os seus esforços para conseguir elevar o European Science TV and New Media Festival para um novo patamar.

Este ano, pela primeira vez, o European Science TV and New Media Festival e a cerimónia de entrega de prémios aparecem fundidos num único evento que passará a ter lugar anualmente em Lisboa. Há várias razões para o nosso agrado por este facto: antes de mais, o facto de as três organizações que têm trabalhado em conjunto na organização da gala de entrega de prémios de Lisboa desde 2012 se terem associado neste evento de maior dimensão, que irá apresentar as melhores produções europeias sobre ciência na área da Televisão e dos Novos Media. Em segundo lugar, o facto de a cidade de Lisboa se ter também associado a este projecto e nos ter permitido organizar o festival num cenário tão magnífico como o cinema São Jorge. Esta mistura de identidade portuguesa e europeia é algo que todos apreciamos e que esperamos poder desenvolver nas futuras edições.

Há outro desenvolvimento que tem lugar este ano pela primeira vez e que é igualmente gratificante. Trata-se da associação ao festival de três centros de excelência europeus na área da Comunicação de Ciência. Sempre valorizámos muito a estreita relação que mantemos com as cadeias de televisão, os cientistas e os produtores de toda a Europa, mas o desenvolvimento de novas categorias no domínio do áudio-visual ao longo do último ano deu origem a uma nova onda de interesse noutros domínios. A Glasgow City of Science participou em 2014 no então pioneiro Prémio do Júri Jovem e este ano tornou-se associada do Festival e dos Prémios Viva. A Universcience de Paris é outro desses novos associados, que se sentiram entusiasmados com a variedade e a inovação das iniciativas desenvolvidas para o Festival de 2015. A nossa agenda também atraiu a atenção de MINT Zukunft schaffen a quem temos o prazer de dar as boas-vindas a bordo da nossa organização.

The European Science TV & New Media Festival is the most popular science communication event in the world of television, cinema and audiovisual.

Science popularization TV documentaries, online videos and interactive productions have been growing in influence in the last years e are today a major tool in the promotion of scientific culture. That’s why Ciência Viva is so happy to bring this festival to the city of Lisbon, where it will take place yearly from now on. This is a happy evolution that is taking place in a phase of great expansion of the Festival.

The organizers of the Festival - Ciência Viva, EuroPaws and EuroScience - have just been joined by partners that are a reference in the european science communication field like Glasgow City of Science, from the United Kingdom, Universcience, from France, and MINT Zukunft Schaffen, from Germany.

“Ambition” is a 5 minute science fiction video designed as part of an innovative promotional campaign around ESA comet-chasing mission Rosetta. The film was commissioned by ESA and was made in collaboration with the Polish production house, Platige Image. The film was trailed online in early October 2014 and the premiere was held at the British Film Institute on 24 October with a simultaneous world-wide online release, three weeks before the Philae Lander was successfully placed on the surface of Comet 67P/C-G.

Being unable to absorb nourishment, in particular glucose, the cancerous cells ferment and divide repeatedly. Called the Warburg Effect, after a German doctor who discovered it in the 1920s, this process made a strong comeback in the research agenda.

ESOcast is a video podcast series dedicated to bringing you the latest research from ESO. ESOcast 64 shows that there seem to be Saturn-like rings around a minor planet in our solar system which orbits between Saturn and Uranus. ESOcast 69 presents the result of observations which reveal extraordinarily fine detail in the planet-forming disc around the young star HL Tauri. In ESOcast 72 the MUSE instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope gives us the best ever three-dimensional view of the deep Universe.

Scientists don’t know what most of our universe is made of. The atoms we’re made from only make up four per cent. The rest is dark matter and dark energy (for ‘dark’, read ‘don’t know what it is, but we can’t see it either’).The evidence that dark matter exists comes from the movement of stars. And theorists wrestle with how it might arise starting with the current theories of particle physics. But the stakes are high - because if dark matter fails to show itself, it might mean that physics itself needs a rather profound rethink.

Os cientistas não sabem de que é que o nosso Universo é feito. Os átomos que conhecemos representam quatro por cento do Universo. O resto é “matéria negra” e “energia negra” (“negra” quer dizer que não só não a podemos ver como nem sequer sabemos o que é). As provas de que a matéria negra existe vêm do movimento das estrelas. E os físicos teóricos tentam perceber como é que ela apareceu analisando as actuais teorias da física. Mas há muita coisa em jogo porque, se a matéria negra continuar sem ser detectada, talvez tenhamos de repensar de novo toda a física.

Future is a state of the art science magazine series. In this episode we present two remarkable projects. The first is the invention of an American, Ben Kacyra. He has designed a laser system to record in detail the shapes of precious objects and structures which are valued as part of local or world heritage. The information is processed and stored on a computer so that if the building say was destroyed a replica could be created with great accuracy. The second item features what are called vertical farms.

The French Oceanic ship Pourquoi pas began a historic mission in 2013. This is the story of research two kilometers under the sea, where key insights are emerging into the greatest evolutionary phases of living creatures. Scientists aboard the Pourquoi Paswill for the first time be able to study shrimps, crabs and mussels that are living at great depths and in perfect health. We will be able to see how creatures living next to vents of volcanoes spewing super-salty volcanic fluid at 350 degrees C and who never see the light of day survive.

The main feature of the cartoon series is the depiction of the Rosetta and Philae spacecraft as anthropomorphized characters, while travelling though space to meet the comet known as 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. To date, six videos have been released in this series to provide updates on the various stages of the mission. The cartoon series generated a large following on ESA’s Social Media channels and generated a 4 billion page impact during the landing event on 12 November 2014.

He works in the field of metal complexes for medical imaging (MRI, PET, and gamma scintigraphy).Besides teaching and his scientific career, he is involved with the public understanding and popularization of science through lectures, articles, and radio broadcasts, creating bridges between natural sciences and arts, with an emphasis on opera.Currently, he is the editor in-chief of the bulletin of the Portuguese Chemical Society.

João Paulo André é doutorado pela Universidade de Basel, Suíça, e é Professor de Química Inorgânica e bioinorgânica na Universidade do Minho, onde desenvolve trabalho na área dos metais complexos com aplicação em imagiologia médica (ressonância magnética; PET e cintigrafia nuclear). Para além da carreira de Professor e Investigador, desenvolve actividades na área da promoção e divulgação da ciência através da dinamização de palestras, programas de rádio e escrita de artigos, criando pontes de ligação entre as ciências naturais e as artes, com ênfase na ópera. Antigone Marino

Antigone Marino is a researcher at the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems (ISASI) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Her research activities have been concentrated on the study of soft matter optics applied

to telecommunication, with a special interest in liquid crystals technologies. She is member of two COST Management Committees and in 2005 she founded the Naples OSA student chapter, and in the same year the International OSA Network of Students (IONS) project, born from the collaboration between European OSA chapters. In 2010 she joined the European Physical Society and started the Young Minds (YM) project, becoming in 2013 its chair. Nowadays, the project includes more than 400 young scientists from over 34 Sections in 18 European countries.

Antigone Marino é investigadora do Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems (ISASI) do Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche de Itália. A sua investigação tem-se dedicado à óptica da matéria mole aplicada às telecomunicações e, em particular, à tecnologia de cristais líquidos. José Manuel Costa is Director of Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema and Teacher of Film History and Documentary Studies at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He has played a very activ role in the film archive movement.

He was a member of the FIAF Executive Committee (International Federation of Film Archives) and President of the Executive committee of ACE (Association des Cinémathèques Européennes). He headed the LUMIÈRE Project of the MEDIA Programme (1991-1995). Among other writings, he is the author of monographs on D. W. Griffith, R. Flaherty, J. Ivens, F. Wiseman, Chinese and Indian film.

José Manuel Costa é Diretor da Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema e professor auxiliar convidado na Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Desempenhou vários cargos no movimento internacional das cinematecas e museus de cinema, incluindo os de membro do Comité Executivo da FIAF (Federação Internacional dos Arquivos de Filmes) e de Presidente do Comité Executivo da ACE (Associação das Cinematecas Europeias). Mark McCaughrean is the Senior Scientific Advisor at the European Space Agency, in the Directorate of Science and Robotic Exploration, responsible for communicating the

scientific results from ESA’s astronomy, heliophysics, planetary, and fundamental physics missions. Following his PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 1988, he has worked in the UK, the US, Germany, and the Netherlands. Mark and his team currently have spacecraft working at Venus, Mars, Saturn, and around the Earth, as well as looking at the Sun. They are also building new missions to Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter’s icy moons, as well as new space telescopes, some of which will be searching for Earth-like planets in orbit around nearby stars. Their most recent launch was the Gaia Milky Way surveyor, operating 1.5 million km from Earth since last December.

Mark McCaughrean é astrónomo. Especializado em observações no infravermelho, tem estudado zonas de formação e evolução estelar e os seus sistemas planetários. É doutorado pela Universidade de Edimburgo, na Escócia, e prosseguiu a sua carreira nos Estados Unidos da América, Alemanha e Reino Unido. Trabalha para a Agência Espacial Europeia (ESA) desde 2009, no ESTEC, na Holanda. Consultor Científico Sénior para a Ciência e Exploração Robótica, Mark é responsável pela comunicação com os cientistas e com o público dos principais resultados em ciência espacial. Neste sector da ESA são desenvolvidas as missões de astronomia, heliosismologia (estudo sismológico das estrelas), Sistema Solar e física fundamental, contando actualmente com 15 missões em operação e 10 em preparação.

Ana Viseu

Ana Viseu is Associate Professor at the School of Technology, Arts & Communication, Universidade Europeia. Previously she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at York University,

Canada. In 2013 she returned to her home country, Portugal, to become a Marie Curie Fellow. Her research focus is on the practices of governance, development and use of emergent (and contested) technologies, from both material and theoretical perspectives. She holds a PhD from the University of Toronto, and was a Research Associate at Cornell University. She has also participated and organized a number of outreach activities that seek to bring science to the public. Her website can be found at www.anaviseu.org.

Ana Viseu é Professora Associado na Faculdade de Tecnologia, Artes e Comunicação da Universidade Europeia. Bella Hurrell is deputy editor of the BBC News Visual Journalism team. She leads a team of digital journalists and works creatively with designers, developers and editorial experts across BBC News to produce cross-platform stories and innovative interactive digital

content. Recent team projects have included: Can you land on a comet? – a game that highlights the challenges of Rosetta’s final mission, Syrian journey - an interactive enabling the user to explore the difficult choices faced by Syrian refugees, NHS Winter A&E tracker – a data project enabling users in the UK to follow how their local hospital is performing, to Life in a town called Mongo – a video rich feature exposing the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. Projects taken on by the team vary hugely and use a range of technologies, but the aim is always the same: to find imaginative and compelling ways to connect audiences to the story and help them understand the issues.

Carlota Simões holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Twente, Netherlands; she is assistant professor at the Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra and Director of

this university’s Science Museum. Carlota Simões devotes a large part of her time to the popularization of science, writing books and articles for general-purpose media, organizing activities for children and giving talks for the general public.

Claude Farge

Claude Farge is the director of the Publishing and Innovative Media Content Division and the director of the Multimedia Library of Universcience, an organisation that groups two of the most important science centers in

France, the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie de La Villette and the Palais de la Découverte. He has an extensive experience as a producer of videogames and as a writer and director of short and medium length films for which he won several prizes.

Christoph Falkenroth

Christoph Falkenroth studied musicology, philosophy and medieval German at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg. Following graduation, he worked as a freelance researcher, writer, journalist and multimedia author. In

1996/97 he completed his training as a scriptwriter at the ‘International Filmschool Cologne’. For 12 years he wrote and adapted screenplays of various genres and developed different drama formats for German TV. He spent six years as a board member of VDD (German Writers Guild) and is member of the ‘German Television Academy’. Since 2008 he is a research assistant and project coordinator at MINTiFF, a research project at the Technical University Berlin, which deals with ‘STEM and Equal Opportunities in TV drama formats’.

Christoph Falkenroth estudou musicologia, filosofia e alemão medieval na Albert-Ludwigs-University, em Freiburg. Trabalhou como investigador, escritor, jornalista e autor de produtos multimédia. Em 1996/97 completou a sua formação como scriptwriter na International Filmschool de Colónia. Lars Becker-Larsen

Lars is a film and television director who has been fascinated by physics throughout his career and has made several ground-breaking productions over some 20 years. Many of the films which gained Lars prizes since

2004 lacked nothing in intellectual weight, yet were appreciated by wider audiences. In 2004, his production on The Copenhagen Interpretation which presented a high flown debate about quantum physics won him two awards. In 2009 he took on another world changing scenario, this time in Renaissance science, and his film The Moving Earth notched up three awards this time. Lars latest success, Taming the Quantum World, attracted two festival juries in 2014 who bestowed special awards for this production. This film is also a candidate for the new Physics Prize at the European Science TV and New Media Festival 2015 - but Lars will not of course be on the jury for this award. Joana Barros

Joana Barros has a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and is the coordinator of Associação Viver a Ciência, a portuguese grassroots organization aimed at bringing science and society closer together. During the past 10 years she has worked in

projects that explored literature, photography and film in the context of science communication reflecting not only on scientific concepts but also on the social and cultural aspects of the scientific endeavor. Her project “Vidas a Descobrir” about women scientists and her documentary “A História de um Erro” about a rare genetic disease received several international prizes. She has organized science films exhibitions in Portugal and has collaborated with Mostra Cinema y Ciencia in Spain, where she co-organized a Portuguese Restrospective.

Antigone MarinoJuri for the Physics Prize

Antigone Marino is a researcher at the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems (ISASI) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Her research activities have been

concentrated on the study of soft matter optics applied to telecommunication, with a special interest in liquid crystals technologies. She is member of two COST Management Committees and in 2005 she founded the Naples OSA student chapter, and in the same year the International OSA Network of Students (IONS) project, born from the collaboration between European OSA chapters. In 2010 she joined the European Physical Society and started the Young Minds (YM) project, becoming in 2013 its chair. Nowadays, the project includes more than 400 young scientists from over 34 Sections in 18 European countries.

The mission of the ‘La Caixa’ Foundation (FLC) is to contribute to the advancement of people and society.
