INTRODUCTION

The National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC) is funded by the U. S. Department of Energy' to provide services in the field of low and medium energy nuclear physics to users in the United States and Canada. The National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC) Online Data Service, available since 1986, is continually being upgraded and expanded. Most files are now available for access through the WorldWideWeb. Bibliographic, experimental, and evaluated data files are available containing information on neutron, charged-particle, and photon-induced nuclear reaction data, as well as nuclear decay and nuclear structure information. The information available to the users of NNDC services is the product of the combined efforts of the NNDC and cooperating data centers and other interested groups, both in the United States and worldwide.

NUCLEAR REACTION DATA

The Center is responsible for the coordination of CSEWG, the Cross Section Evaluation Working Group, under a cooperative agreement of many laboratories within the U.S. and Canada to produce specific nuclear reaction data evaluations which contain the complete information needed for application studies. The latest evaluated library, ENDFB-VI2, is found on the ENDF database. Evaluated data files originating in other countries are also available on this database.

A library of experimental data for nuclear reactions induced by neutrons, charged-particles, and photons is available on the CSISRS database. This database is produced through a cooperative effort by the members of the Nuclear Data Center Network3.

19980427 078 Prepared for the International Conference on the Physics of Nuclear Science and Technology, Long Island, NY, October 5-8, 1998.

NUCLEAR STRUCTURE AND DECAY DATA

Evaluated nuclear structure and decay data is available from the Center's ENSDF database. This library currently contains data for 2802 nuclides, and is produced as a cooperative effort of the International Nuclear Structure and Decay Data Network4 organized under the auspices of the IAEA. Evaluations for the mass chains A244 are processed by the NNDC and published in Nuclear Data Sheets'.

The Nuclear Wallet Cards, last issued in 1995, contains spin and parity, mass excess, decay mode, and half-life, width, or abundance for nuclides and their isomeric states. The latest information is found in the NNDC N m A T database under Wallet Cards.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC DATA FILES

The NNDC maintains two bibliographic data files: Nuclear Science References (NSR) and CINDA.

NSR contains references to the literature on nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, decay data, and atomic data relevant to nuclear physics. The Web interface to NSR also provides links to the original journal article for American Physical Society online journals. Recent References, an index to current references on nuclear data, is extracted from NSR and published annually in the December issue of Nuclear Data Sheets.

CINDA, the index to neutron data, contains information on experiments, evaluations, calculations, reviews, and compilations. The data is blocked by data set and may also contain an index to the experimental or evaluated file containing the data. CINDA is a cooperative effort amoung the NNDC, the NEA Data Bank, the IAEA Nuclear Data Section, and the Russian Nuclear Data Center, and is published by the International Atomic Energy Agency6.

ON-LINE ACCESS TO NUCLEAR DATA

The NNDC On-line Service, available which can be accessed through the Internet, consists of a number of components which can be activated by the user either by menu selection or using commands'. Direct access to the NNDC databases is available without cost 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To connect, use TCP/IP's TELNET command: ELNET BNLND2.DNE.BNL.GOV (or 130.199.112.132); username: NNDC; authorization GUEST.

Direct access is provided through WWW to the system's documents and codes and to many of its databases. Future plans include the ability to access all NNDC database directly on the WWW. To access the NNDC Homepage, connect to URL: http://www.nndc.bnl.gov. Additional features available include, a mirror site for the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAEFU) Table of Nuclides.

The WWW user may also choose to TELNET into the NNDC Online Service to access it’s full capabilities.

Access to the NNDC Online Service GUEST account allows a potential user limited time to become acquainted with the system. Upon logout from the GUEST account, a user may sign up to obtain authorization for an account. Provided the information requested is entered correctly, the account will be activated by the next business day.

Codes, documents, and libraries are also available by anonymous FTP to bnlnd2.dne.bnl.gov; username: ANONYMOUS; password: your email Figure 1. NNDC Retrieval statistics for the On-Line address. Data Service, World Wide Web, and FTP, 1986-

1997. Access to the NNDC Online Services, including WWW and anonymous FTP, shown in Figure 1, has increased exponentially since its inception in 1986.

Data may be downloaded from the NNDC databases or viewed as tabulated data, and for users with graphics terminal using either Tektronix, PostScript, or Regis, many of the components have data plotting capabilities. A variety of output formats are available for most files.

“Barn-Book” plots are available for nuclear reaction data, using plots similar to the well-known NNDC Neutron Cross Section “Book of Curves” *. The data to be plotted are selected from the CSISRS database. These may be plotted together with evaluated data sets selected by the user from the ENDF database. Future upgrades will include: 0 “canned plots, where scales, data, and curve overlays are selected by NNDC Staff, 0 the ability of the user to overlay plots of herhis own choosing.
