Montessori Method of

Teaching & its Significance

Dr. Maria Montessori has developed the Montessori Method

of education which is a child-centered educational approach is based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. This method is time tested with over 100 years of success in diverse cultures throughout the world.

This methodology explains that it is in nature of a child that he/she has eagerness to gain knowledge and has ability to learn quickly in a supportive and thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the spirit of physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of the whole child.

The learning triangle is created by teacher, child and environment. The class room is designed by the teacher in such a way that encourages independence and freedom within boundaries and sense of discipline. The child through individual choice makes use of what environment offers, to develop himself with the help of teacher who guides or supports him.

In early childhood the students learn through sensory-motor activities, working with materials that develop their cognitive powers through direct experience of seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching and movement.

Montessori education offers your children opportunitiesto develop their potential as they step into the world as fully engaged, responsible, and respectful citizens with an understanding and appreciation that learning is for life.

Montessori education recognizes that children learn in different ways and also with their own pace and are free to learn. On advancing through the curriculum he is guided by the teacher and customized plan is designed.

Beginning at an early stage Montessori students develop discipline, coordination, concentration and independence.

Students are part of a close caring community and enjoy freedom limits set by their teachers.

In “Qur'an” subject, we teach our kids basic knowledge of Qur'an and recognition of Alphabets along with supplications.

1

2 In “Arabic” subject, we focus upon some vocabulary words, names of fruits, vegetables, shapes, flowers and parts of body etc. This is just to familiarize our kids with the favorite language of Allah S.W.T. As Allah S.W.T revealed in his Holy book Qur'an. Our children love to learn the Arabic language and try to speak it.

3 “Love Islam” is an attractive and colorful programfor our Montessori kids. We teach kids the Masnoonsupplications with tajweed and their meanings which our beloved Prophet S.A.W. taught us. Children learn and memorize supplications and manners associatedwith them from morning through school off time. It is especially designed to introduce our kids with theirlord “Allah S.W.T. in best of ways. It also tries to develop a strong bonding between the child and his creator. It is also an effort to develop love of Islam in our kids, so that they feel proud of being Muslims.

Have Dinner Earlier

We tend to eat late during summer time that delays sleep time and has a significant effect on our sleep-wakeschedule. If parents want to set their child's sleep schedulethey need to first do it so that their kids follow them and hence go to bed early .

Set Your Bedtime Routine

For your kids this may consist of brushing teeth, taking a bath, at this time mothers should recite masnoon Supplications for bedtime and reading Islamic stories. In older children and teens it may include reading “Holy Qur'an” and reading books of their interest.

Turn off Wi-Fi

It has been observed that before bedtime children use electronicswhich is very common now-a-days which has adverse effects on them. Parents are advised to keep their kids away from all typesof gadgets like iPads, Cell phones and laptops which emanate blue light. This blue lights shuts down the production of melatonin (regulates sleep and wakefulness) and reduce sleep.

7 Stop Summer Time Naps

At the age of six many children start napping again during summer afternoon. Which turn out to be the cause thatthey are not getting enough sleep? If these naps are longerthan one hour, they probably will negatively affect your child's ability to fall and stay asleep at night.

Avoid Junk Food before bedtime

Since the kids need to get to bed earlier, avoid junk foodi.e. spicy fast foods etc close to bedtime which adverselyinfluences your child's sleep and cause Acid reflux and raisebody temperature, both of these reduce sleep.

Set rules and be a model example

A recent survey done by the National Sleep Foundation foundthat children whose parents set rules as to sleep-wake times and stay away with electronic devices in the bedroom, as wellas abiding by themselves, slept longer and better. These children were also more likely to do better in school and far less likely to develop mood and anxiety disorders.

How to use School Diary

PARENTS' GUIDELINES

Over the coming days, may we suggest you to engage in a conver-sation with your child where you go through their diary with them and negotiate the expectations you have at home.

Regularly ask to see your child's diary.

Discuss homework requirements and how your child is recording. Sign your kid diary each week.

Maintain contact with coordinator and subject teachers.

Be consistent with homework supervision (actively observe if required).

Contact teacher if child is unwell, when work is due or tests/assessments are occurring.

'Supervise' your child's homework time. A child's bedroom is not the ideal location for a family where computer, television, cell phone, ipad etc. are placed.

Children's Arrival and Departure

Guidelines - School and Montessori

Please call 0333-1511013, 051- 2102035, if your child is late or if due to unforeseen circumstances you are delayed in picking up your child.

The Class/Montessori Teacher should be made aware of the arrangements for collection. This includes children regularly travelling home by themselves and/or if your child is to be collected by someone other than their parent. Continual lateness at the beginning of the school day or in picking up a child will be a cause for concern and will lead to a meeting with the relevant Class/Montessori Teacher.

Parents make sure to collect their child by 1:30 pm. The classrooms are out of bounds for parents and childrenout of school hours, unless previously arranged with theClass/Montessori Teacher.

In the morning teachers need to concentrate on the children and on their lessons. Any urgent messages can be received by the Teachers as a written message via your child or the school office.

Supervise Home Work Parents should daily check their diary and supervise

their kid home work under their guidance.

Let your child focus on what he/she likes to do. Parents should always try to expose their kids to a variety of interests

and see their enthusiasm for the activity and talk to them what types of activities they find most engaging.

The Do's and Don'ts of Back

to School Lunch Boxes

Good nutrition is not only essential for your child's growthand development but is also important in keeping themadequately fuelled for the long school day. Whether startingschool for the first time, progressing from primary to secondaryschool or returning to a familiar routine; this transition is a busytime of year for kids, teens and parents alike. Back to schoolmarks a fresh beginning and set routine for the next 9 or 10months of your family's year, so take this time as an opportunityto encourage healthy lifestyle routines and habits.

Don't forget that a school lunch is one of your child's three meals a day, so it's important to ensure they are getting nutr-itionally balanced lunches and snacks. Typically, a packed school lunch should contain all of the major food groups; consider:

1. 1 portion of starchy carbohydrate

(e.g. wholegrain breads, bread and wraps, brown rice/pasta)

2. 1 portion of meat or meat alternative

(e.g. chicken, fish, egg, pulses)

3. 1 portion of dairy

(e.g. yogurt, cheese)

4.1 (+) portion of vegetable

(e.g. carrot sticks, peppers, sweet corn, lettuce, onion)

5.1 (+) portion of fruit

(e.g. apple, orange, banana, pear, kiwi)

6. A bottle of water and/or milk

The Do's and Don'ts

Do:Get the kids involved - learning about food and nutritionare important life skills and should be encouraged from an early age. Children are more likely to be interested in their lunches if they have help to choose and prepare themselves. Don't be afraid to let them experiment!

Try new foods - trying new foods from an early for age plays ahuge role in a child's willingness and acceptance different foods. Children's food preferences evolve as their palates mature, so continuously encouraging them to try new and different foods is a crucial step in their development of good eating habits.

Plate

25

Page 28: INTRODUCTION - Aims education systemaims.net.pk/wp-content/themes/aims/downloads/Admission prehand… · Tips for dealing with Separation anxiety_____ The ... influences your child's

Shake things up -Variety is key, not only does variation in the diet provide nutritional benefits, but reduces boredom and lack of interest in food. This is particularly important for children and teen-agers, as they can be prone to becoming fussy eaters.

Tailor lunches to the time of year for example, a flask of soup with brown bread during the cold, winter months or pastasalad during spring and summer.

Make it look appetizing: It is worth spending that extra few minutes on presentation, especially for younger children. Aim for a variety of shapes, colours and textures in the lunchbox. The more pleasing a packed lunch looks; the more likely kids are to eat and enjoy it. It may be worth investing in colourful, easy-open Tupperware, lunchboxes and thermos flasks to liven up the school lunchtime.

Be prepared and organized: preparation in advance will not only save you time, but will reduce the chances of opting for last minute ready-made lunches or convenience foods which can be highin sugar, fat and salt.

26

Page 29: INTRODUCTION - Aims education systemaims.net.pk/wp-content/themes/aims/downloads/Admission prehand… · Tips for dealing with Separation anxiety_____ The ... influences your child's

Preschool Handbook For ParentsPreschool Handbook For Parents

Don't:

Don't leave it to the last minute: Lack of time may increase the chance of filling lunchboxes with unhealthy, convenience foods.

Don't repeat the same lunches over and over: while it's a good idea to establish a number of reliable lunches that work, try not to over do it. Mixing it up will increase the variety of nutrients provided.

Don't forget about portion size: This should be specifically tailored to your child/teens age, size and activity levels. Younger children will gene-rally need smaller portions than older or more active children.

Don't forget about hydration:Research suggests dehydration can lead to reduced concentration and performance in children. Water and milk are two excellent tooth-friendly choices; try to avoid sugary drinks.

Don't forget about breakfast:

It's no myth that 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day'. Break the overnight fast and set the school goers up with a bowl of milky porri-dge or mixed berries with yogurt and granola. It can be a long wait until small break, so opt for a breakfast that will fill and fuel!

Did you know?

According to nutritionist the recommended 3 servings from the‘milk, yogurt and cheese' food group each day as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Between the ages of 9-18 years, 5 servings per day are recommended due to the increased calcium requirements at this life stage.Examples of one serving include a 200ml glass of milk, 125ml yogurt and 25g (matchbox size piece) cheddar cheese.

28

Calcium is recognized for its important role in normal bone growth and development; with childhood and the adolescent years particularly important for forming healthy bones. However, you may not realize that there is more to milk and dairy than calcium, with one glass of milk alsoproviding us with protein, potassium, phosphorus, iodine, vitamin B2 andvitamin B12 - each playing a variety of important roles for our health.

How to Motivate Students to Love Reading

Mostly parents don't know that how they can help and encouraged their children learn to read; and it's not surprising that they are interested in this essential skill. Reading plays an important role in later school success.

Here are some guidelines for helping preschoolers

and school-age students learn to read.

1. Teaching reading will only help:

Sometimes, parents are told early teaching is harmful, but it's not the case there are hundreds of studies showing the benefits of reading to your children when they are young.

Reading

29

Page 32: INTRODUCTION - Aims education systemaims.net.pk/wp-content/themes/aims/downloads/Admission prehand… · Tips for dealing with Separation anxiety_____ The ... influences your child's

Preschool Handbook For Parents

2 . Teaching literacy isn't different than teaching other skills.

You don't need a Ph.D. to raise, happy, healthy and smart child.Mothers and fathers successfully teach their kids to eat with a spoon, use a potty, keep their fingers out of their noses and say “please.” These things can be taught pleasantly, or they can be made into a painful chore. Being unpleasant (e.g. yelling, punishing, pressuring) doesn't work, and it can be frustrating for everyone. This notion applies to teaching literacy too. If you showyour 18-month-old a book and she shows no interest, then put it way and come back to it later. If your child tries to write her nameand ends up with a backwards “D,” no problem. No pressure. Nohassle. You should enjoy the journey, and so should your child.

Parents make sure that they always daily spend some time totalk with their kids regarding their school activities, homework and what they did in break time which helps them to develop speaking skills. Reading is language activity and if you want tolearn language, you better hear it and eventually, speak it.Studies have shown that exposing your child to a variety of wordsh e l p s i n h e r d e v e l o p m e n t o f l i t e r a c y s k i l l s .

3. Talk to your kids (a lot).

30

Page 33: INTRODUCTION - Aims education systemaims.net.pk/wp-content/themes/aims/downloads/Admission prehand… · Tips for dealing with Separation anxiety_____ The ... influences your child's

4. Read to your Kids.

It's really a good idea at least with preschoolers that if a parent can't read English, there are alternatives, such as using audio books but for those who can, reading a book or story to a child is great easy way to advance literacy skills. Research shows benefits for kids as young as 9-months-old, and it could be effective even earlier that. Reading to kids exposes them to richer vocabulary than the usually hear from the adults who speak to them. and can have positive impacts on their language, intelligence and later literacy achievement.

5. Teach Phonics (Letter names and their sounds).

Your child can't sound out words or write them without knowing the letter sounds. Most kindergartens teach the letters and parents can teach them too. The parents can find different products based on letternames and letter sounds, including ABC books, charts, cards, blocks, magnet letters, floor mats, puzzles programs for tablets and computers. Understanding the different developmental stages of reading and writing skills will help to guide your lessons and expectations.

6. Listen to Your Child Read:

When your child bring books home from school's library after you read to him/her ask them to read out to you and if doesn't sound good (mistakes, Pronunciation) have him/her read it again or read it to him/herand then ask them to try to read it by themselves. Different studies shows that this kind of repeated oral reading makes students better readers, even when it is done at school.

7. Promote Writing:

Literacy involves reading and writing. Having books and magazinesavailable for your child is a good idea, but it's also helpful to have pencils, crayons, markers, and paper. Encourage your child to write. One way to do this is to write notes or short letters to her. It won'tbe long before she will try to write back to you.
