…………
The outlet connection used for AHG cylinder valves are standardized
by the Compressed Gas Association (CGA), in order to prevent any
mixup in gas connections. The system is adopted internationally by
many organizations such as the American National Standard Institute
(ANSI) and the Canadian Standard Association.
Each outlet connection is standard for a specific product or product
class. They are fully defined in terms of thread size, type, nipple and
seat configuration and dimensions.
Some CGA connections commonly used in AHG plants are shown
on the next page for reference. To have the complete range of
connections and details, refer to the current edition of CGA

Pin-Index
Safety System
……………
The pin-index system is designed for use with medical gas cylinders
directly hooked to medical equipment.
The system is used for flush type valves, where one or two
holes are drilled at a given angle and distance from the valve inlet.
To connect the system, the holes are matched with one/two pins in
the yoke. The pins and holes have fixed positions, to prevent
hooking up a wrong gas.
The drawing shows the holes and their location from the
cylinder inlet.

USE
1. General • Only persons experience in handling
and use of industrial gas cylinders and liquid containers should use them. They should know and understand the properties and hazards associated with each gas before use.
• Use correct tools for cylinder valve spindle or valve outlet connector. Incorrect tools can apply excessive force which may cause damage. Do not use extension pieces on tools for tight closing of valves.
2. Identify the gas before use • Identify gas cylinder by gas product
label, gas symbol punch mark, valve type and colour. DO NOT DEFACE MARKINGS, REMOVE LABELS OR CHANGE COLOUR OF CYLINDER.
• Identify liquid product by decals, product nameplates and consignment delivery note. Check decanting hose CGA connection sent with tanker.
DO NOT USE ADAPTERS TO FIT WRONG HOSE.
3. Avoid contamination of gas
• Avoid external contamination of cylinders, valves, regulators, liquid hose, storage connections from oil, grease and dirt. Oil and grease in contact with oxygen can cause spontaneous fire and explosions. Dirt containing hydrocarbon or cellulosic materials can cause explosions.
• Avoid internal contamination of cylinder by backflow of hazardous material from user system.
DO NOT ALLOW CYLINDER PRESSURE TO GO BELOW USER SYSTEM PRESSURE. Use check valve in outlet piping to prevent backflow.
4. Handle with care
• Handle high pressure cylinders with caution. A broken valve or rupture in a high pressure cylinder can cause serious accidents.
DO NOT HAMMER OR DROP THE CYLINDER.
• In the work area, hold cylinder on a trolley or on ground fixed to a chained support. Open cylinder valve slowly and close valve after use.
• Beware of extremely low tem-perature of liquefied gases. CONTACT WITH LIQUEFIED GASES CAN CAUSE SEVERE FROSTBITE AND INJURY TO EYES AND SKIN. Use face shields, asbestos gloves and protective clothing. Depressurize filling hose and drain piping carefully before proceeding to disconnect.
• Gasifying liquids in a confined space cause high pressure. Liquid when gasified will increase in volume several hundred times and in the confined space of a container will raise the pressure which can cause the container to rupture.
MAKE SURE CONTAINER OR PIPING HAVE SAFETY VALVES WHICH CAN RELEASE THE EXCESS PRESSURE.

HANDLING
STORAGE
• Do not move cylinders by dragging, sliding or rolling on the ground. Use hand carts, forklift, trucks or a similar device with cylinder secured by chain.
• Do not lift cylinders by magnets, ropes, chains or slings. Valve protection caps should not be used for lifting. Use cradles, forklift platforms or similar device with cylinders properly secured for lifting.
• Transport cylinders upright on trucks with cylinders secured by load binder belts to prevent cylinders from falling during movement.
• Use trucks with side barriers and strong posts for securing load with binder belts.
• Use only vehicles which are in good condition and have sufficient load carrying capacity for the total cylinder carried.
• Safe vehicle speed should be maintained and extra care should be taken when vehicle is moving uphill or downhill.
• Observe all state and local regulations.
• Store containers in groups by types of gases, keeping fulls and empties separately.
• Use well ventilated and dry storage room with temperature not exceeding 130oF (54.4oC).
• Do not store near readily ignitable substance such as gasoline.
• Store containers standing upright where they are not likely to be knocked over.
• Acetylene cylinders and liquefied gas containers used in welding and cutting should be stored and used valve end up. Storage of acetylene cylinders valve end up will minimize the possibility of solvent being discharged.
• Store flammable gases separately from oxidizing gases.
