Introduction

A modern era truism is that "waste is a design flaw".Consequently true, the demolition industry does notcreate waste but handles that which others put there.

Construction will never be truly sustainable untilconsideration is given, during design and planning, tothe deconstruction legacy.

Design for Deconstruction (DfD) has been aroundconstruction for some time but has never engagedwith the sector that deconstructs.

This conference brings together, for the first time, those that design, specify, construct, manage andlegally frame construction projects with those thattake them down and handle the deconstructionlegacy.

The conference will consider nano-technology andhow this may impact in deconstruction. You will hearabout the extensive work being done on steel re-useand reclamation, and how Building InformationModelling (BIM) could be extended intodeconstruction. The conference will also discuss howone might establish a legal obligation fordeconstruction as part of the initial design andplanning of a building.

This conference is held in partnership withThe Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE)and the Construction Industry Council(CIC).

Keynote speaker profiles

Paul Morrell OBEPaul is a chartered quantity surveyor and was formerlya senior partner of Davis Langdon (now part ofAecom), where he worked since graduating fromuniversity until retiring in 2007.

He was subsequently appointed as the UKGovernment's first Chief Construction Adviser inNovember 2009, with a brief to champion a morecoordinated approach to affordable, sustainableconstruction.

He has extensive experience of major constructionprojects in both the public and private sectors, with aparticular specialisation in commercial development, value management and procurement strategy andpractice.

He is a Fellow of The Royal Institution of ChartedSurveyors (RICS) and the Institute of Civil Engineers(ICE), and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute ofBritish Architects (RIBA) and the Association forProject Management. He served as a Commissioneron the Government’s Commission for Architectureand the Built Environment from 2000 to 2008; andwas awarded an OBE for services to the industry in the2009 New Year Honours list.

In Government, Paul chaired the GovernmentConstruction Board, responsible for the developmentof a new cross-Government construction strategy, targeting a reduction of 20% in the cost of publicsector construction.

He now practises as an independent consultant, and isa Visiting Professor at Nottingham Trent University.

He joinedLoughborough University in 1993, following a careerin civil engineering and construction management, especially in complex projects.

He has an impressive research track record in technicalinnovation – particularly offsite construction and morerecently nanotechnology. He is a founding memberof the influential UK industry body Bodyoffsite andhas led a number of overseas trade missions.

He is Project Director of the European ConstructionInstitute (ECI) Safety, Health and Environment taskforce and coordinator of the Conseil Internationale deBatiment (CIB) working commission on constructionhealth and safety. He also has led many health andsafety research projects funded both by the UKGovernment and industry. He led several researchprojects on the Olympic Park developments. Alistair iscurrently working as an Occupational Safety andHealth Consultant Adviser on a major multi-national infrastructure project.

Wendy JonesWendy is a Specialist Occupational Health Practitionerand a registered ergonomist. She is employed as aresearcher in the School of Civil and BuildingEngineering at Loughborough University, investigating the long term health impacts ofnanotechnology in the construction and demolitionsectors. This is a three year project funded by TheInstitute of Safety and Health and supported by theIDE and the National Federation of Demolition.

Wendy also researches other areas of health andsafety in construction, including the development oftraining tools for construction employees who are atrisk of occupational ill health. She previously workedas an occupational health adviser, providing training, support and expert advice to individuals andorganisations in the water, gas, healthcare andeducation sectors.
