CTEKWITH YOU EVERYSTEP OF THE WAY

• CTEK chargers have a multi-step process to test, charge and maintain batteries.

• The diagram on the charger shows each step.

• The top line is Voltage.

• The bottom line is Current.

Step 1–2 (Desulphation, Soft Start): Wakes up the battery and tests to see if it can take charge.

3 4 Step 3–4 (Bulk, Absorption): Takes the battery to 100% capacity. 80% Fast, 20% slowing down to ensure no overcharge.

5 Step 5 (Analyze): Tests the battery to ensure it can retain the charge.

6 Step 6 (Recond): Optional feature: Use if a battery needs recovery from deep discharge.

7 8 Step 7–8 (Float maintenance, Pulse Maintenance): Patented maintenance programme to ensure maximum capacity for short term storage and maximum battery life for long term storage.

HOW BATTERIES DIE

• Undercharged batteries build up lead sulphate on plates.

• As these crystals grow the battery loses power.

• If not corrected the battery will die.

• Happens when a ‘wet’ battery is flat.

• Acid and water separate and battery power is dramatically reduced.

• If not corrected the battery will die.

• Happens when a maintenance free battery is overcharged by poor quality equipment.

• Top section of plates dry out and suffer permanent damage.

FACT Around 80% of all battery failures are due to sulphation. CTEK chargers automatically run a ‘Desulphation’ pro-gramme at the start of every charge cycle to remove these harmful deposits.

DID YOU KNOW? Chargers without a Desulphation programme will not reduce this build up and the battery will not be able to be fully charged and will die prematurely.

FACT Some Desulphation pro-grammes run at a high voltage and require the battery to be removed from the vehicle. With CTEK the Desulphation programme operates auto-matically and works in a way that is totally safe and does not require battery removal.

FACT Acid stratification can only be corrected by reconditioning with a higher voltage than nor-mal. CTEK controls this safely through its unique RECOND programme ensuring battery power is maximised and no fluid loss occurs. No need to remove battery.

DID YOU KNOW? Nowadays the vast majority of all batteries are sealed. Bat-tery fluid (electrolyte) cannot be topped up so preserving the original fluid is vital. Un-controlled charging will boil fluid away and quickly ruin the battery.

CTEK ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL CHARGERS• Conventional (Linear) chargers

use large, heavy, inefficient and unsophisticated transformers.

• CTEK SMART Chargers use switched mode inverter technology.

• As well as small size, low weight and high power efficiency they provide.

− Fast and Safe Charging with high accuracy and voltage control.

− Safety for the user, all battery types and sensitive vehicle electrics.

− Smooth, surge free electrical current for speed and safe use without disconnecting the battery from the vehicle.

− Weather resistance. − Ability to be left connected for months, maintaining the battery in perfect condition.

DID YOU KNOW? The first commercially used transformer was installed on a street in Massachusetts in 1886.

FACT The first widespread use of switched mode power supply was in the Apple II computer launched in 1977. It allowed the machine to be lightweight.Today switched mode elec-tronics are found in many appliances including smart phones, computers, televi-sions and microwave ovens.

FACT Unlike switched mode power supply a transformer con-tinues to consume the same amount of power regardless of whether it is idle or working.

FACT Conventional chargers are heavy due to having an iron core transformer.

DID YOU KNOW? A conventional charger cannot analyse the battery and will not detect when it is fully charged.

CTEK chargers communicate with the battery continuously to minimise the risk of under or overcharging.

DID YOU KNOW? CTEK chargers all have built in antispark protection and can detect if terminals are connected incorrectly.

FACT CTEK chargers can be left connected for months, only charging when the battery requests it.

CTEK UNIQUE ENDORSEMENTS• Independent Magazine Tests

− CTEK has won more independent charger tests in leading journals than any other charger.

• Vehicle Manufacturers − CTEK chargers are used by the world’s leading luxury and per-formance brands.

• CTEK is a winner in both cases and is chosen because of...

− Technical performance − Safety − Reliability − Value for money

DID YOU KNOW? CTEK was founded in 1997 in Dalarna Sweden.CTEK chargers are sold in over 60 countries around the world.Over 1 million CTEK chargers are sold annually.

FACT CTEK chargers are used by over 25 prestige manufac-turers including Audi, BMW, Bentley, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lexus, Maserati, Mercedes Benz, Porsche and Rolls Royce.

FACT CTEK has won every battery charger test in Auto Express magazine since 2009.

Page 9: INTRODUCTION...20Ah ( Golf Trolleys, Battery Operated Ride-On Toys, Electric Bikes, Electric Scooters etc.) 60Ah (Car, Light Van, Leisure, Marine) 100Ah (Car, Light Van, Leisure, Marine)

HOW CHARGERS WORK• Just like any electrical device a

battery DRAWS IN energy from a power source (in this case a bat-tery charger).

• This is because the voltage of the charger is HIGHER than the volt-age of the battery and high voltage flows to low voltage.

• This ‘flow’ of energy is known as ‘current’.

• The greater the difference in volt-age the more current is drawn in.

MYTH A charger FORCES electrical current in to the battery.

FACT Voltage control is the most important single factor when charging.

FACT Too much voltage leads to overheating and potentially dangerous ‘gassing’ and can shorten battery lifetime.

FACT Too little voltage leads to un-dercharging and can shorten battery lifetime.

DID YOU KNOW? An easy way to think of how voltage and current are re-lated is to imagine how water acts;

Voltage = water pressure

Current = water flow

WHY CHARGE?

• Charging every 4–6 weeks − Ensures longest battery lifetimes

− Ensures fast and repeated engine starts

− Avoids cost and inconvenience of flat batteries

• Battery care more important than ever

− More electronics in vehicles − Higher demands on batteries − Advanced batteries require advanced charging

− Costs associated with a ‘flat’ battery have increased

− Alternators alone will not charge batteries to full potential

FACT A battery is a device that stores electrical energy in chemical form. It is used when a ‘load’ is present (stereo on, lights on etc.)

FACT ‘Charging’ is simply the pro-cess of replacing any electri-cal energy used by the ‘load’.

FACT Driving habits are the No. 1 cause of battery failure;Short journeys, heavy acces-sory loads and long periods of inactivity increases the risk of your battery becom-ing undercharged and dying prematurely.

DID YOU KNOW? Factory defects are the rea-son for less than 7% of battery failures. Most batteries that ‘fail’ are not broken. Just undercharged.Over 50% of all breakdowns on cars under six years old are battery related and are the No. 1 reason for calls to break-down organisations.

FACT Good battery care can triple battery lifetimes.

DID YOU KNOW? Cold weather itself is NOT the cause of flat batteries. If the battery is undercharged the cold temperature drastically reduces its starting power and failures occur.

FACT The replacement cost of a battery can run in to £100’s when costs of recovery, the new battery, professional fitting and need to make alter-native trasport arrangements are taken in to account.
