Dance Ontario Call for Nominations,

Association and Members’ News

The Ontario Ministry of Govern-ment & Consumer Services (MGCS) has released an update regarding the status of the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) that delays implementation once again. The Ministry will now give at least 24 months notice to the sector be-fore proclamation. The Canada Council for the Arts welcomes the appointment of Pierre Lassonde as the new Chair of its Board of Directors. Mr. Las-sonde assumes the role immedi-ately for a 5-year term. He was selected after a comprehensive search, following the death of for-mer Chair Joseph L. Rotman in Jan-uary. Rita Davies has been appointed Chair of the Ontario Arts Council (OAC), following her nomination by the Government of Ontario.

Michael Coteau, Ontario’s Minis-ter of Tourism, Culture and Sport announced the Ministry's intent to launch a series of town hall ses-sions this fall in 11 sites across the province to gain input into the de-velopment of a cultural strategies policy that truly reflects Ontario's cultural sector.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport has launched a province-wide consultation to develop the first Culture Strategy for Ontario. From October through December, people in Ontario can participate in the consultation in various ways . www.arts.on.ca [email protected]

Call for Nominations—Jacque

Foesier Youth Dance Award Dance Ontario is soliciting nominations for the JACQUE FOESIER YOUTH DANCE AWARD. This annual award seeks to rec-ognize exceptional young dancers ages 19 & under who are not only pursuing excel-lence in their craft but go above and be-yond making a difference in the lives of others and/or contributing to the dance community. For more info and nomina-tion forms, please visit the website.

Creative Partnerships 2015—Dance Ontario is delighted to announce that the Creative Partnerships for 2015 will be awarded to Louis Laberge-Côté and Jacob Niedzwiecki. Selected from a broad field of stellar applications, the Commis-sioning Committee of Lola Ryan, Jennifer Watkins, James Kendal and Debbie Kapp chose works that fit the mandate of the program. These new pieces will be pre-sented at DanceWeekend'16 next January 15-17 on each of the three performance days.

Acclaimed choreographer LOUIS LABERGE-CÔTÉ will create D’arc, an intimate, viscer-al, emotionally and physically charged 15-minute solo set on contemporary dancer Jordana Deveau.

JACOB NIEDZWIECKI's proposed work Un-titled Bureaucracy Project (UBP) explores several types of participatory performance, through themes of bureaucracy and securi-ty.

CHANGE TO FIXED MEMBER-SHIP DUE DATE OF OCT 15—

Dance Ontario will be making changes to the membership due date this year be-cause of cashflow issues for the last quar-ter of our fiscal year. Therefore all mem-bers will be invoiced for fees at the begin-ning of October. Those members who are current, or who recently joined may remit their dues by Dec 31, 2015.

Members’ News— SERIES 8:08 CEASING OPERATIONS The series was founded in 1993 by dance artists Sarah Chase, Michael Du Maresq and Michelle Silagy to fulfill a need in the Toronto dance community for more oppor-tunities for emerging and established inde-pendent choreographers to show works-in-progress. The Choreographic Performance Workshops allowed choreographers to put new work before an audience and obtain feedback in a supportive yet professional atmosphere. For the last fifteen years Se-ries 8:08 has also presented a series of Alternative Training Workshops led by es-teemed Canadian and international artists.

A key factor in the decision to wind down Series 8:08 was that many other dance organizations have emulated the public workshop platforms, alternative training classes and residency opportunities that 8:08 has been offering for more than two decades and it seemed wise to stop dupli-cating services. - JACQUELINE LEMIEUX PRIZE AWARDED TO MARIE-JOSÉE CHARTIER The Jacqueline Lemieux Prize ($6,000) rec-ognizes outstanding applicants to the Grants to Dance Professionals Program and Grants to Aboriginal Dance Profession-als Program.

Marie-Josée Chartier moves easily be-tween the worlds of dance, music, opera and multimedia, adopting the roles of cho-reographer, director, dancer, vocalist, mentor or teacher. She founded Chartier Danse (2003) to support her projects for the national and international scenes. Her many awards include 4 Dora Mavor Moore Awards and the K.M. Hunter Dance Award.

- AMELIA EHRHARDT APPOINTED NEW CURATOR AT DANCEMAKERS The Board of Directors of Dancemakers officially welcomes Amelia Ehrhardt as Curator as of September 18, 2015. She will be working with current Curator Benjamin Kamino during a transition period until December 2015 when she will take on the position full-time.

QUINTE BALLET SCHOOL OF CANADA Thanks to a generous grant from The John M. and Bernice Parrott Foundation, the Quinte Ballet School of Canada (QBSC), founded in 1972, has purchased the land that their Palmer Road dance facility in Belleville sits upon from the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB).

CCDT TO PERFORM AT THE JOSE LIMON INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL, NEW YORK CITY This October, Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre has been invited to perform alongside a stellar cast of international companies celebrating the José Limón Dance Company’s 70th Anniversary. Cana-da’s only representative at the two-week Festival, CCDT will be taking fourteen danc-ers to perform excerpts from one of Limón’s iconic works, The Winged (1966), on the stage of the storied Joyce Theater in Manhattan. Hosted by the world’s oldest modern dance company, the Festival is the dream opportunity for CCDT’s emerging artists who, with an average age of 16, are the youngest group invited. It also will mark the company’s first time performing in New York City. In addition to the José Limón Dance Company, CCDT will be shar-ing the stage with sjDANCEco (California), Royal Danish Ballet (Denmark), CoreoArte (Venezuela), and Bayerische Staatsballett (Germany), among many others.

- CHANGES AT THE METCLAF FOUNDATION The Metcalf Foundation’s Performing Arts Program Director, Michael Jones, will be leaving the Foundation at the beginning of October to assume the role of CEO at the Saskatchewan Arts Board.

HALTON DANCE NETWORK produced an interactive dance event called heartBEATZ to celebrate Culture Days for the commu-nities of Burlington, Milton and Oakville.
