The University’s approach

• Based on the belief that self-regulation

results in greater engagement than top-

down regulation

• Based on the belief that involving more

people in ethics review results in a greater

awareness

Page 9: Introducing Research Ethics & the UREC/file/...Introducing Research Ethics & the UREC Professor Peter Bath, UREC Deputy Chair Definition of ‘research’ •All investigation undertaken

• To promote awareness and understanding of research

ethics throughout the University

• To advise on any research ethics matters that are referred to

it from within the University, including on the interpretation

of the Research Ethics Policy

• To monitor the ethics review procedure as administered by

departments

• To keep abreast of the external research ethics environment

and ensure that the University responds to all external

requirements.

UREC’s key tasks…

Page 10: Introducing Research Ethics & the UREC/file/...Introducing Research Ethics & the UREC Professor Peter Bath, UREC Deputy Chair Definition of ‘research’ •All investigation undertaken

• The ethical review of individual applications:

• unless an applicant has appealed, or

• the department cannot reach a decision.

• Give advice on ethical issues that are not concerned with research.

What UREC doesn’t do…

Page 11: Introducing Research Ethics & the UREC/file/...Introducing Research Ethics & the UREC Professor Peter Bath, UREC Deputy Chair Definition of ‘research’ •All investigation undertaken

from UREC

• Online ethics review system (Autumn 2013)

• UREC survey of departments (how can

UREC help departments promote need for ethics

review better?)

• Faculty reps work to engage with

departments

• Plans for a ‘10 years of research ethics’

event in 2013/14 (good practice sharing,

awareness raising, discussion of key issues etc.)
