Our satellitesDelivering global
mobile broadband coverage
Inmarsat owns and operates one of the largest
satellite communications networks in the world.
It comprises a eet of eleven satellites in
geostationary orbit around 36,000 kilometres from
earth and includes our latest generation Inmarsat-4
(I-4) satellites, which were launched in 2005 and
2008. The I-4 eet is expected to have a commercial
life into the 2020s.
The I-4s have set a new benchmarkfor mobile satellite communicationsin terms of their power, capacity andexibility. One I-4 satellite is sixtytimes more powerful than anInmarsat-3 satellite. The three in-orbit I-4s deliver broadband on aglobal basis except for the extremepolar regions.
Each I-4 satellite generates hundredsof high power spot beams, whichcan be re-congured in real-time so
that network capacity is availablein areas of high service demand.
I-4 trafc is mostly carried asInternet Protocol (IP) packet-switcheddata. This extends our networksability to provide enhanced digitalmobile communications. It alsosupports traditional circuit-switchedservices, such as voice and ISDN,supporting legacy back-ofcesystems, while providing a clearmigration path to IP.
Managed by our Satellite Control
and Network Operations centresin London, our I-4 satellite systemis linked to the internet and theworlds terrestrial telephonenetworks via three Inmarsat-ownedSatellite Access Stations (SAS) inItaly, the Netherlands and Hawaii.
Inmarsat has also entered intoagreement with the EuropeanSpace Agency (ESA) to becomethe commercial operator of anew satellite called Alphasat. Thesatellite is part of an ESA initiativeto develop a new spacecraftplatform capable of carrying a largecommunications payload. Alphasatis scheduled for completion in 2012and will supplement the existing
I-4 satellites. It will provide serviceover Europe, the Middle East andAfrica, allowing access to additionalL-band spectrum in these regions.

The rst new service to be launched on the
I-4 satellites was our Broadband Global Area
Network service BGAN. It is the fastest
growing service in our history and has already
been used commercially in over 190 countries by
customers in a wide range of sectors including
media, government, oil and gas and aid.
Land mobile
servicesRedefning remote
Delivering voice and high-speeddata services, BGAN enables usersto set up a broadband mobile ofcein minutes, regardless of the stateof local terrestrial networks. Youcan remotely access your corporatenetwork via a secure VPN connectionto use email, the internet and otherdesktop applications, while makingphone calls at the same time.It enables you to be as productiveaway from the ofce as you areback at base, wherever you are on
the planet.
BGAN delivers contended data ratesup to half a megabit per secondfor standard data applications. For applications where quality ofservice is paramount, such aslive video broadcasting, it hasthe unique capability to provideguaranteed data rates on demand.
The service is accessed through arange of small, lightweight satelliteterminals, which are quick to set
up and easy to use. There areterminal options for both singleusers who move from one locationto another, and small teams whomay need to establish a temporaryofce for longer periods. There arealso terminals that can be mountedon vehicles.
If the main requirement is simplyto make a phone call, InmarsatsIsatPhone provides a low-costhandheld option. Currently, theservice can be used within Asia,
Africa and the Middle East. Wewill be launching a global satphoneservice based on a new generationof handsets.

Maritime servicesHigh-speed data on the high seas
Thousands of vessels in themerchant, shing, leisure andgovernment sectors rely on ourservices for position reporting, weather and navigational chartupdates and for enabling crewto call or email friends and family a vital resource for maintainingmorale when away at sea forpotentially months on end.
Our Fleet services have becomethe de facto standard for deep-sea
ships, with over 20,000 terminalscommissioned.
Most important, however, isInmarsats role in providing safetyservices. Our satellite services formthe core of the Global MaritimeDistress and Safety System (GMDSS),which instantly connects marinersaround the world to the nearestrescue co-ordination centre. Manylives have been saved thanks toInmarsat and countless seafarersset sail every day, secure in the
knowledge that help is at handat the touch of a button.
The reliability of our network isfundamental to delivering thiscapability. On average, our networkavailability exceeds 99.99 percent. This is continually monitoredby the International MobileSatellite Organisation (IMSO) toensure we meet the requirementsof the International MaritimeOrganisation (IMO) for GMDSSto the maritime industry.
In 2007, Inmarsat enhanced its
maritime portfolio with the launchof FleetBroadband. It deliverssimultaneous voice and broadbanddata with contended rates upto 432kbps per channel plus theoption of guaranteed data rateson demand up to 256kbps. Theservice also enables more advancedapplications such as the use ofGSM phones at sea, using picocell technology.
FleetBroadband is the fastest growingmaritime service in our history and is
being used on some of the largestinternational merchant eets.
FleetBroadband is available globallyexcept for the extreme polar regions.
Inmarsat plays an integral role in the lives of
seafarers. When it comes to delivering reliable
maritime communications and safety services,
no other network can match the global reach
and breadth of services we offer.
Inmarsat offers an unparalleled range of voice, faxand data services to suit all types and tonnages ofvessel from small yachts to the largest ocean-goingships, enabling seafarers to communicate as effectivelyon board as they can when they are ashore.

Inmarsat was the rst civil operator to
introduce satellite communications services for
the aeronautical industry, with the launch of
its Aero H service in the early 1990s. Today,
with more than 10,000 aircraft in the air
transport, business aviation and government
sectors relying on global in-ight voice and data
connectivity from Inmarsat, we are the most
widely used satellite operator in the industry.
Over ten years ago, Inmarsat wasthe rst operator to comply withthe standards and recommendedpractices of the International CivilAviation Organisation. This allowsaircraft operators to y safely andmore efciently outside traditionalradio coverage.
The launch of the Inmarsat-4satellites paved the way forSwiftBroadband, our latestgeneration aeronautical service.
Designed to meet the demandfor increased bandwidth acrossall areas of aviation, it deliverssimultaneous voice and broadbanddata communications to the aircraftand data streaming on-demand,providing the foundation for theconnected aircraft of the future.
A single Inmarsat installationenables a diverse range of in-ightapplications for the cockpitincluding air trafc control, safety communications, engineperformance monitoring, operationalplanning, ight plan and weatherupdates and other Electronic FlightBag applications. It also enables air-to-ground telephony, email, internet,
VPN, videoconferencing, text servicesand in-ight news updates and mobilephone services for passengers.
