Life, as we call it.
I suppose that before we talk about life, we should somehow name it….
![Page 3: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Classifying Organisms
You have at least a two part name…..your first, and your last.
For example, George Washington. First name George, last name Washington. …..Duh!
![Page 4: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Classifying Organisms.
Let’s use the common house cat as an example…
Felis domesticus. The first part of the name is called….Genus
First name (always capital case) refers to similar closely related organisms
![Page 5: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Classifying Organisms.
Continuing Felis domesticusThe second name is the……. Species
A group of organisms that can mate and produce fertile offspring in nature.
Lower case
![Page 6: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Classifying Organisms.
So, in the case of Felis domesticus (the common house cat) Felis is the genus and domesticus is the species.
You can tell the house cat is related to the puma because the puma’s scientific name is Felis concolor.
Both from the same genus.
![Page 7: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Classifying Organisms.
As it turns out, there is more than just a genus and species involved in naming organisms. In fact there are 8 steps or levels in classifying organisms.
![Page 8: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The Eight levels of classification.
1- DOMAIN Dumb2 - Kingdom Kings3 - Phylum Play4 - Class Cards5 - Order On6 - Family Fat7 - Genus Green8 - SpeciesStools

The seven levels of classification.
How ‘bout a human DOMAIN - Eukarya Kingdom - Animalia Phylum - Chordata Class - Mammalia Order - Primates Family - Hominidae Genus - Homo Species - sapiens

The Three Domains of Life
1. Eukarya:2. Archaea: 3. Bacteria:
![Page 11: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
The Three Domains of Life
The Eukaryota include the organisms that most people are
most familiar with - all animals, plants, fungi, and protists.
![Page 12: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The Three Domains of Life
Bacteria: prokaryotes, very diverse group. Most abundant
life on Earth.
![Page 13: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
The Three Domains of Life
Archaea: Prokaryotes, many are "extremophiles“
• include inhabitants of some of the most extreme environments on the planet. Some live near rift vents in the deep sea at temperatures well over 100 degrees Centigrade. Others live in hot springs or in extremely alkaline or acid waters. They have been found thriving inside the digestive tracts of cows, termites, and marine life where they produce methane
![Page 14: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The Kingdoms
There are a total of 6 Kingdoms for all life based on their cell type, ability to make food and cell number.
![Page 15: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

The Kingdoms
6. AnimalsAll animals are multi-cellular,heterotrophic
aerobic, eukaryotes. Lots of cells. Must eat other organisms. Need air. Has a Nucleus in each cell.
![Page 32: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Animals
Animals are divided into about 35 phyla. Remember….Kings Play Cards On Fat Green Stools.
One of the biggest separation occurs between… Invertebrates
Animals without a backbone
Vertebrates Animals with a backbone.

Animal Symmetry
The bodies of (almost) all complex animals exist either as:
Radial - External body parts are spaced equally around a center

Animal Symmetry
The bodies of all complex animals exist either as:
Bilaterial - One line of symmetry that divides it into mirror images.
![Page 36: Intro to Life and Animals](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062423/568148a8550346895db5bb2c/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
