generates350megawattsolarpowerwhichPuriintendstoincreaseto1.5gigawattinthenextthreeyears.HehasalreadypumpedinmorethanRs6,000croretobuildsolarpowerassetsforboostinggenerationcapacity.AnotherRs6,000crorehasgoneintobuildingcoalthermalplantsinMadhyaPradeshandChhattisgarhandadistributionnetwork.

By2016,PuriwillpumpinRs32,000croreintoHPPPL'ofwhichRs13,500crorehasalreadybeenutilisedbythecompany'toraiseitspowergenerationcapacitytosixgigawatt.Thermalpowerwillaccountforfourgigawatts,1.5gigawattwillcomefromsolarandtherestfromhydro.Thisislikelytoputitamongthetopfivepowerproducersinthecountry.NTPCistheleadingpowergenerationcompanyinIndiacurrentlywithaninstalledcapacityofalmost43gigawatt.PurisayshedoesnotwanttodependentirelyonthermalpowerbecausetherewillbeashortageofcoalinIndiainthefuture.Hedoesnotwanttodependonimportedcoal."Howcanwedependonasupplychainthatsitsinathirdpartycountry,"hesays.

WhileHPPPL'sthermalplantsinMadhyaPradeshandChhattisgarhareyettogoonstream,itbegansolarpowergenerationin2010/11.ThecompanyhadanEBITDA(earningsbeforeinteresttaxdepreciationandamortisation)ofRs500crorefromitssolarbusinessin2012/13.

ThefirstphaseofHPPPL'sthermalpowerplantinMadhyaPradeshislikelytobecommissionedinthenextcoupleofquartersandwillhelpthecompanygenerate1,200megawattofpowerbytheendof2014/15.Itshydroandsolarplantswillgenerateanother1,000megawattbythen.NextinlineisthecommissioningofthesecondphaseofthethermalpowerplantinMadhyaPradesh,followedbyChhattisgarh.

Puriisnotwillingtodisclosewhenhispowerbusinessislikelytobreakeven.Butonceallitspowerplantsbecomeoperational,HPPPLhopestogenerateEBITDAofoverRs2,500crore.Ithasalreadysigneda25yearpowerpurchaseagreementwiththeUttarPradeshPowerCorporation.

PuriishappywiththewayhisplansaretakingshapebutadmitsthereisalongjourneyaheadforHPPPL.ItremainstobeseenwhetherPuricanexecutehisambitiousplansforthepowergenerationbusiness.
