SOCIALLY SPEAKING

by Gwen Swinburne

Attention: Breaking news - May 7, 2013 - St. Pete Beach voted third best beach town in the United States by Parents Magazine Ladies March Luncheon - Was held at Bonefish, a new choice not visited before. It was thoroughly enjoyed by 20+ ladies. Food is always good at Bonefish and of course the company of friends is always fun. “Thanks, Bridie for all you and your helpers do for the Ladies of the YTC.” April 11 - Tennis Extravaganza - Keith and Ruby Tuesday entertained with their fantastic music and song. The food was very good, many went back for seconds (including me). Approximately 65 residents attended. The dance floor was busy. Thanks to the Tennis Committee for all their work. See the Tennis Talk column for winners and awards. Thanks to Julie Ash and the Tennis Committee. (see p5, p7, p11 & p15 for pics) Memorial Day Cookout - Many came to feast, dance, and celebrate with residents who served courageously to keep our country free and safe. Dishes brought by all were ‘ummm’ good, so many choices and plenty for all. Lee Jay played with his usual gusto, charm and talent. Dance floor was busy and of course, all came to the floor to do our usual dance, the Electric Slide. It is still the one dance that brings out many. Lee Jay's services were provided once again by Yolanta, truly our "Belle," of the YTC. “We all thank you, Yolanta for your generosity.” What a fun evening. Many thanks to the Social Committee. (see p7 for more pics) The June Issue of Closeups welcomes new advertisers, The Pearl, the Toasted Monkey (owned by Belinda and Phil, former owners of Sea Hags), and Dee Carlton, massage therapist. In addition, under new owners, we welcome back Sea Hags, our next-door neighbor. Please make sure that all of our advertisers are on your list to frequent or use. Keep in mind that all of our restaurants here locally have live music most evenings. Sad to say Blackwater Grille's doors are closed.

Reviews on the Internet for the restaurant were brutal. We all kept hoping for success for those nice young men, but it is a tough business and many do not survive beyond 6 months. We all enjoyed Lee Jay while they were open and Friday evenings found many YTC residents on the dance floor. Lee Jay will be at the Riviera Supper Club starting June 7. Summer is quiet here at the YTC for social events, but there are many activities in our area. Be sure and pick up a copy of the Beach paper, there are pages of fun things to do. And do not forget the wonderful display of fireworks that we all enjoy from our balconies on the 4th of July. Very few places in the world have 20 miles of fireworks all up and down the beach to watch from the comfort of their condos, including one very big one on the beach near the Bilmar. Do watch the boards in your lobby for announce-ments of activities. The upcoming July 4th Cookout is now posted and will be well attended. Be sure and get your check and reservation in before July 2nd. All buildings have many new owners. We welcome all of you. Please when you are in the elevator with others, introduce yourself. Please make a point of joining us at the Clubhouse for scheduled parties and Ladies Luncheons. Have a fun and safe summer. Keep residents who are in poor health or ones that have recently lost loved ones in your prayers.

The Staff of Closeups plus a bit of History by Karen Biernik It’s time we give a thunderous standing ovation to the current staff and the founders of Closeups. Wow that’s great! A wave is starting at a cheering Courageous; Intrepid is standing with their arms in the air; Constellation is stamping their feet as we approach a boisterous Weatherly. “Hey, keep it down we have rules here.” Closeups, which has become an integral part of the YTC, was conceived by Lorraine Huhn in the mid to late 80’s. Lorraine has certainly made her mark on the YTC wearing many hats; giving her heart and soul to the YTC and for that Lorraine, how can we ever thank you? Sometime around 1990, Ed and Carol Fron accepted the full responsibilities of our wonderful community newsletter from Lorraine. Recollections are a little fuzzy so we are giving our best guess as to the dates. Closeups has been published quarterly with the exception of the years from 1996 to 2001 when Ed was recovering from a serious car accident. After a cumulative total of about 13 years of working on Closeups, the Fron team was ready to retire. When no one else stepped forward, in March of 2009 Andy Csanady assumed the duties of editor. Andy spends an incredible amount of time assembling articles, coordinating with the printer, picking up, delivering, mailing, you name it; he does it. The president of each building and the president of the YTC submit articles for publication. Other contributors are: Marianne Cakarnis who writes an article for the Tennis Committee, Gwen Swinburne writes about our social activities, Carol Fron handles the obituary column and our manager, Christiaan Cavallero submits a report. Pictures, oh do we like pictures at the YTC; what a bunch of hams. I LOVE IT! The hammier (Oh my, is that a word?) the better. If you have an article or a photo you think would be interesting for the community, please forward it to Andy Csanady at [email protected]. Most of our Closeups photographers are women and we have an unwritten rule at the YTC, “If a lady

looks goofy or shuts her eyes in a picture, we delete; if a man looks goofy in a picture, too bad.” Men get your cameras. Oh boy, I can see the pictures coming now. Watch out ladies. Gwen Swinburne, sa leswoman extraordinaire, is our advertising department. Gwen runs the department in a professional manner and makes collecting upwards of 18 ads for each issue look effortless. She enjoys the interaction with our advertisers, she enjoys serving our community, and she turns a tidy profit for the YTC. The advertisements pay all costs associated with Closeups, all costs associated with our YTC phone directory, and the cost of our YTCSPB website. By the way, we will be publishing a new phone directory in the August time frame. To avoid the disappointment of not being included in our new phone book or of not having your information updated, please send it in as soon as possible (see page 2 of Closeups). Did you ever notice how few typos or grammatical errors there are in our newsletter? It’s thanks to the efforts of our proof readers: Sue Crook, Carol Fron, Ed Fron, Gwen Swinburne, and Joanne Hippo. When it comes to the mailing phase, all the names mentioned above under the direction of Andy, get the job done within half an hour. I would like to share a little more YTC history with you. Ed Fron started the YTC website in 1995; we have had our own website and our own domain name since 1995. How cool is that? Go take a look at YTCSPB.com. Make sure you look at the photo gallery, all the hams are there. Ed had visions of the website having many capabilities although Ed was probably ahead of his time as he could not generate the interest to get it moving. Andy has also assumed the duties of the website. “Thank you Andy. We do appreciate your hard work. If not for you, our wonderful community newsletter and our website would probably have faded away.” An incredible amount of work is done by our volunteers. Next time you are out and about, please extend a warm thank you to Andy, Lorraine, Ed, Carol, Gwen, our staff and our article contributors.

TENNIS TALK By Marianne Cakarnis Our spring season filled our courts with many regular tennis players and several people new to our property and our courts. We had a few Monday “Stroke of the Week” classes that had well over 15 people attending. We really enjoyed meeting new neighbors and having them come out to play. Our last official function was the Extravaganza held on April 11th. We had a Round Robin tournament that morning (see p11 for winners) and a dinner and awards presentation in the evening. The music for dancing was provided by Ruby Tuesday and Keith. Our pro, Scott, changed the format for club championships this year. He assigned the teams and all matches were played over two days. Instead of trophies the winners names and pictures are posted on plaques to be displayed in the pro shop. One of our most active tennis players, Roger Hennessey, is battling cancer and currently finishing chemo and radiation treatment. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers so that he can return to the Y&TC very soon.

Additional note By Julie Ash

Four young tennis players found the courts full one Sunday morning so they put their heads together to find a way to play. Deciding to send the cutest and youngest member of the group to ask Andy if they could play with the adult group, they found success.
