Interview With Head of IT at Delta Asia

Melina Diamantopoulou, Senior Conference Researcher spoke with August Chan, Head Of IT, Delta Asia Melina: What does your role involve and how is technology helping your organisation grow and reach more customers? What is the role of Cloud Computing in this? August: Relating to Cloud Computing, Delta Asia had reviewed two possible implementations this year. One was cloud based CRM and the other was setting up DR at ASP site. To improve our cross-selling and up- selling result, we needed to deploy a CRM system. To have a shorter deployment lead time and less up- front investment, we had seriously study several SaaS solutions. However, due to private ordinance consideration and possible regulator challenge, we decided to go for on-premises CRM deployment. This is quite "sad" as on-premises system needed much more up-front investment, both in the hardware and software. Also, the time-to-market was much longer than the cloud solution. On DR setup in an ASP provider data centre, we are still evaluating. As the DR site would seldom require to activate, it would be very not cost effective if we setup and maintain our own DR site. In this context, an ASP model is a very sensible approach. Melina: What do you consider as the three main challenges for wide Cloud Computing adoption in Asia and how do you anticipate they can be overcome? The three main challenges on cloud adoption would be regulatory requirement / privacy ordinance, rights to control or extend of influence of the cloud platform and data security concern. The first challenge could only be resolved by the authority. The second challenge relates to the peace of mind in the access to the data and system at will, the stability and availability of the system, and the resilience in case of break down. This might be tackled by contract terms and SLA. August Chan Head Of IT Delta Asia

Melina: What does your role involve and how is technology helping your

organisation grow and reach more customers? What is the role of Cloud

Computing in this?

August: Relating to Cloud Computing, Delta Asia had reviewed two

possible implementations this year. One was

cloud based CRM and the other was

setting up DR at ASP site.

To improve our cross-selling and up-

selling result, we needed to deploy a

CRM system. To have a shorter

deployment lead time and less up-

front investment, we had seriously

study several SaaS solutions. However,

due to private ordinance consideration

and possible regulator challenge, we

decided to go for on-premises CRM deployment.

This is quite "sad" as on-premises system needed much more up-front

investment, both in the hardware and software. Also, the time-to-market

was much longer than the cloud solution. On DR setup in an

ASP provider data centre, we are still evaluating. As the DR site would

seldom require to activate, it would be very not cost effective if we setup

and maintain our own DR site. In this context, an ASP model is a very

sensible approach.

Melina: What do you consider as the three main challenges for wide

Cloud Computing adoption in Asia and how do you anticipate they can

be overcome?

The three main challenges on cloud adoption would be

regulatory requirement / privacy ordinance,

rights to control or extend of influence of the cloud platform and

data security concern.

The first challenge could only be resolved by the authority.

The second challenge relates to the peace of mind in the access to the

data and system at will, the stability and availability of the system, and

the resilience in case of break down. This might be tackled by contract

terms and SLA.

The data security issue is not an easy topic, especially after the Snowden

event.

Melina: How much is Mobility part of your strategy? Is it important for

organisations to enable employee mobility and reach out to customers

through mobile devices?

Delta Asia is dedicated to go mobile. The enterprise mobility is one of the

projects that enables better internal communication. Deploying a mobile

trading platform is a high priority project. We invest a lot to improve our

network infrastructure including network security to embrace this

Internet+ era.

Melina: How do you think Disruptive Technologies affect the way

business is done in your industry?

Disruptive technology is by definition bringing a big impact. We always

make ourselves agile and be vigilant to the market change. We may not

be the pioneer to start utilizing disruptive technology, but we will see

what might be coming.

What was your interest in attending Cloud Asia Forum? What are you

looking to achieve by attending the event?

I hope I can share my experience and opinion on Cloud. Knowing what the

peers are working on and getting some market information about Cloud

are also important reasons to join this event.

Hear August present as part of a panel at 6th Annual Cloud Asia Forum, 24

& 25 November 2015, The Mira, Hong Kong
