POEM: “The Vampire”

The night is still and sombre, and in the murky gloom, arisen from his slumber, the vampire leaves his tomb.

His eyes are pools of fire, his skin is icy white, and blood his one desirethis woe begotten night.

Then through the silent city,he makes his silent way,

prepared to take no pityupon his hapless prey.

An open window beckons,he grins a hungry grin, and pausing no one secondhe swiftly climbs within.

And there, beneath the covers, his victim lies in sleep. With fang agleam, he hoversand with those fangs, bites deep.

The vampire drinks till sated,he fills his every pore, and then, his thirst abated, licks clean the dripping gore.

With powers now replenished, his thirst no longer burns. His quest this night is finished,so to his tomb he turns,

and there awhile in silence

he’ll rest beneath the muduntil, with thoughts of violence,he waits and utters blood!

A We are going to read an e:tract from Anne &ice’s novel, Interview with a Vampire . &eadand ;isten.

E6"ra " 1<% see = said the vampire, and slowly he walked across the room towards the window. >or a longtime he stood there, watching the traffic in ?ivisadero (treet. The boy put his briefcase on the tableand waited. The room was totally dark.

<8ut how much tape do you have with you)= asked the vampire. <'nough for the story of a life)=

<(ure, if it’s a good life. (ometimes % interview three or four people a night. 8ut it has to be a goodstory.=

<@f course!= the vampire answered. <% would like to tell you the story of my life.=

< reat,= said the boy. And quickly he checked his cassette and the batteries. <%’m really an:ious tohear why you believe this, why you =

<6o,= said the vampire. <We can’t begin that way. %s your equipment ready)=

<7es,= said the boy.

<Then sit down. %’m going to turn on the light.=

<8ut % thought vampires didn’t like light ,= said the boy. <%f you think the dark helps theatmosphere = 8ut then he stopped.

The vampire switched on the light. And the boy, looking at the vampire, gasped. <?ear od!= hewhispered.

The vampire was totally white and his face was like the face of a statue, with two brilliant greeneyes. 8ut then he smiled and the face moved. <?o you see)= he asked.

The boy shuddered and looked at the elegant black coat, the black tie and white shirt the vampirewas wearing. He had beautiful black hair too.

<6ow, do you still want the interview)= the vampire asked.

The boy’s mouth was open. He nodded. Then he said, <7es.=

The vampire put a hand on the boy’s shoulder and said, <8elieve me, % won’t hurt you. % want thisopportunity. %t’s very important to me.=

The boy wiped his forehead with a handkerchief, checked the microphone, pressed the button andthen said that the machine was on.

<7ou weren’t always a vampire, were you)= he began.

<6o,= answered the vampire. <% was twentyBfive when % became a vampire, and the year wasseventeen ninetyBone.=

The boy was surprised by the date. <How did it happen)=

<There was a tragedy = the vampire started. <%t was my younger brother He died. We wereliving in ;ouisiana then. We had a plantation on the #ississippi river very near 6ew @rleans Wewere all happy there, e:cept my brother. #y father was dead and my mother and sister wanted totake him visiting and to parties. He hated that. He wanted to pray.=

<>inally % built him an oratory in the garden and he spent most of the day there. And after a time, he began to see visions, when he was fifteen. (o he stopped eating and he spent hours praying. He saidthat % had to sell the plantation and use the money in missionary work in >rance.=

<?id you sell the plantation)= asked the boy.

<6o,= said the vampire. <% laughed at him. And he became angry and insisted his vision was true. %told him he would go to school in 6ew @rleans. % don’t remember all that % said. 8ut % never

believed him.=

<What happened ne:t)=, the boy asked.

2<That night he left my room. He walked out of the >rench doors and Cumped from the top of thestairs. He was dead when % reached the bottom, his neck broken.= The vampire shook his head, buthis face was still serene.

<% felt responsible for his death. We abandoned the plantation and rented a house in the city. Theslaves in the plantation said they saw the ghost of my brother walking in the oratory. % started to

drink a lot. % think % wanted to die because % walked black streets alone. And one night, % wasattacked by a vampire. <

<8ut you didn’t die!,= said the young man.

<% was very ill and my mother put me to bed. % was confused and % didn’t know what had happenedto me. The vampire came back that night. 7ou see, he wanted my plantation, $ointe du ;ac.=

<%t was very late and my sister was asleep. He came in from the garden, opening the >rench doorssilently, a tall, pale man with a mass of blond hair and feline movements. And gently, he put a shawlover my sister’s eyes and put out the lamp. % could see his face and his grey eyes and his long whitehands, which were not human. And he talked to me about what % could become, of the life % couldhave. And then he converted me.=
