We conducted a questionnaire as part of our qualitative research for our music magazine. We had already carried out a questionnaire but wanted to do questionnaire as we could make these questions open and gain more information.

From our results we found that the first thing our audience notice when buying a magazine is the title, images and colour scheme. These are the most important things when appealing to a target audience so we will prioritise in creating these things. One of our candidates mentioned a skateboarding magazine called ‘SideWalk’, this has a target audience of young male skateboarders and it appeals to youths with bright colours and images. When asked ‘What sort of features, content etc would you hope to/expect to find in a music magazine?’ there were several responses including a charts section, recommendations of current artists and a trivia section. Question four asked for their opinions on an NME magazine featuring Dizzee Rascal. The candidates taking the interview said that the title stood out on the page but they felt the information was too jam packed and full on to take in. They felt the fonts were good as they were easy to read and that the main target audience would be young male adults. We then showed them existing covers of two magazines; VIBE and Rolling Stone. These are two very different magazine with different target audiences. It was mentioned that in VIBE, Nicki Minaj (the main image) is represented as attention seeking and bold. They have put her image over their own magazine title whereas in Rolling Stone magazine the colour scheme is a lot darker and the band featured are made to look cool and respected. Due to these features and contents our candidates thought that VIBE should be aimed at young males and females whereas Rolling Stone is for an older audience. Our last question asked if they had any further comments and suggestions. One person said that when creating our own we should make sure our title stands out on the page. For example it should not be like VIBE and have an image to cover the word up because we are not an established magazine.

Carrying out this interview has been very useful to us and we will consider people’s opinions as well as the results from our questionnaire.
