In this themed issue of BJR, we focus on the use of inter-
ventional procedures for treatment of musculoskeletal (MSK)
pathologies/indications.
This is a burgeoning area of application for interventional
technology and procedures, and it is now timely to highlight
some of the key topics in this area with a series of compre-
hensive reviews from leaders in the eld.
From reviews covering current research and techniques
for treating key joints such as the shoulder (doi: 10.1259/
bjr.20150372), hips (doi: 10.1259/bjr.20150408), wrist
(doi: 10.1259/bjr.20150373), elbow (doi: 10.1259/bjr.20150368)
and ankle (doi: 10.1259/bjr.20150577) to articles on synovialbiopsy (doi: 10.1259/bjr.20150363), steriod injection for lower
back pain (doi: 10.1259/bjr.20150357) and interventional
MSK procedures in a paediatric population (doi: 10.1259/
bjr.20150369), this issue covers a broad spectrum of key
topics in this eld.
In this collection of articles, we have aimed to provide insight
on some major challenges and potential areas for growth
ahead for this fascinating eld, including ultrasound- and
CT-guided inltration, ne-needle biopsy, drainage, treatment
of tumours, embolization, radiofrequency ablation, MR-guidedfocused ultrasound surgery and microwave thermoablation.
We hope this themed issue provides a comprehensive over-
view of where interventional MSK procedures stand now in
research and clinical practice, as well as providing some in-sight into future directions of this exciting and rapidly
growing eld.
