STREET CORNER

What do you notice about the world around you?• Most people hurrying to University,

chatting in groups- pay little attention• Obvious we were students as near

campus so not abnormal• People in cars commanded our

attention more than pedestrians when queuing at lights. Felt more at ease looking at people in cars as physical barrier- pedestrians closer proximity-more uncomfortable

How do you feel standing there?

*uncomfortable- always consciously trying to look as inconspicuous as possible- kept staring at something to be more relaxed

*Often smiled due to the awkwardness of the situation- pouring with rain appearing to do nothing quite comical. Not normal thing to be doing in that situation.

*Hard to stop fiddling, looking around or putting hands in pockets

Page 3: intervention2_vicki_becky

How do other pedestrians respond to you?

*Got more looks from people in cars than we did from pedestrians

*A few fleeting glances but nothing out of the ordinary

*One girl lost her shoe crossing the road and after it being run over she tried to avert eye contact as she knew I was watching her

WALKING BACKWARDS FROM CAMPUS

What do you notice about the world around you?

*People appeared to question what we were doing but then continue past

*Strange to see the landscape behind me on the way to campus-see things differently

*Noticed more rubbish on the ground as had to be careful to avoid

Page 5: intervention2_vicki_becky

How do you feel?*Awkward and self conscious- worried being judged for standing out and being different- mindful people I know might see me

*Felt more comfortable as we carried on as could see people were taking little notice of us-couldn’t see expressions of people as had back to most of them

*Partner with us made us less out of place as seemed to be having a joke- not a derive as wasn’t on our own and were viewed differently

*Had umbrella up even when stopped raining as a protective barrier to hide

*Taking more notice of our feet as had to think where walking and listen to where people were

Page 6: intervention2_vicki_becky

How do other pedestrians respond to you?*Quizzical, confused look as they passed

*Some angry- maybe taking up path or thought we were attention seeking

*Few people had to split up and walk either side –maybe seen as inconsiderate

*We found it hard to keep a straight face which made some pedestrians have a more positive reaction towards us- some tried to look away to avert our eye contact as we were laughing
