Silent Disco

During the middle of the day, we undertook a silent disco in the purple room of the library.

Each one of us chose our own songs to play through our headphones (mainly because we couldn’t all decide on one song that we all liked).

Not strictly against the rules of the library because it was silent but still deviant because the library is a place of study.

Reactions

We had the attention of the room for the first 30 seconds but the then lost interest.

We did ask someone to film/photograph us but three other people (who we didn’t know) did the same.

Although we couldn’t hear, we were told that people were laughing at us.

We received odd looks too when new people entered the room.

How we felt as a group

We thought it was going to be really awkward/humiliating.

We were pretty much ignored. Even so it was a conscious

dance because we felt like we were being watched. No extravagant dance moves –

‘nan dancing’ We mimicked each other’s

dance moves – safety in numbers.

We stayed within a close proximity – no one moved around the room.

How we felt individually

Coincidently Vicki and Tess’ housemates were in the room. This made the whole performance awkward for

Vicki since her housemates were laughing and filming at her expense.

Tess’ housemates ignored her because they are used to her madness.

Mel ‘zoned-out’ by using the music to distance herself from other people in the room.

Becky was initially embarrassed but then just found it really funny and got into it.
