Charlotte City Council District 3 covers approximately 46,560 acres and has an estimated population of 108,257. The District is located in the southwestern portion of Mecklenburg County and is generally bounded by Freedom Drive to the north, the County line to the south, South Boulevard to the east, and Interstate 485 to the west.

There is a diverse mixture of residential neighborhoods and housing types in the District. Major development in the area includes office, retail, industrial and employment land uses as well as numerous schools, libraries, parks, greenways, and other public facilities.

In recent years, the area has experienced rapid residential and employment growth. Major employers in the area are US Airways, Siemans, Microsoft, Charlotte Pipe and Foundry, T.J. Maxx Corporation, Microsoft, AT&T and Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The Westinghouse Industrial Center, which is located in the southern portion of the plan area, has over 20 million square feet of industrial development and is the largest industrial core in the Carolinas.

Major transportation facilities include numerous interstates and roadways, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and Charlotte Area Transit System bus routes and the LYNX Blue Line, the region’s first light rail service.

Council member LaWana Mayfield is the Council representative for District 3.
