Fieldtrip info /Brief information about “Baganuur” JSC/
Baganuur coal mine was established in 1978 and, it mainly provides thermal coal to the
power stations of Central Energy System.
The Baganuur coal mine is located along the west part of the river Kherlen, in the south part
of the mountainous Khentii area and in the distance of 130 km from Ulaanbaatar city.
In 1960 geologists of Mongolia, Russia, Czech Republic and Germany jointly started
geological exploration in Mongolia and, they discovered the Baganuur coal deposit with
reserve of 599 million tons.
In 2014 coal reserve of the deposit was increased to 812.1 million tons by additional
geological exploration.
“Baganuur” JSC annually produces about 3.7 million tons of coal and removes 19 million
BCM of overburden.
Baganuur coal by its physical and chemical characteristics can be used not only for energetic
purpose, but also in the future it is possible to process it again and use like methane, burning
gas, fuel, liquid and pressed fuel, to use it as other chemical, technological raw material,
which is proved by investigation.
The ash content 12-17%, moisture 28-33%, sulfur content 0.5-0.8% and heating value is
3200-3600 kcal/kg.
