Dear Readers:

Hello and here we are again, this time with a review of 2017 and an outlook on the current year.

A lot is happening in our markets; rising volumes on the Eurasian trade lanes are anticipated. We are happy to be part of it and to further strengthen our market position.

Concentrating on the Chinese Belt-and-Road Initia-tive and thus on the New Silk Road will be our main focus this year, too. Yet we will also work on new, specifi cally ground-breaking products on the North-South Corridor, i.e. Scandinavia-Russia-Iran-India, but also Western Europe-India.

In time with the beginning of the New Year, our new website went online. In the process, we also altered the appearance of our Newsfl ash, making it lighter and more modern. We would like to hear your com-ments on our new Internet appearance – there’s a questionnaire on the last page.

And now, enjoy reading!

NEW TRAIN CONNECTIONS AND PRODUCTS

In January 2017, InterRail operated the first test train from China to the UK – the Channel Tunnel made it possible, the distance was circa 12,000 kilometers. At the same time, InterRail Uzbekistan started a block train ser-vice ex Xuzhou to Tashkent.

In April, the first eastbound train left London for Yiwu. This time again, the InterRail group operated the train; the Chi-nese subsidiary headed the project.

In June, InterRail Europe and JF Hillebrand, an internation-al logistics provider for wine, beer and spirits, cooperated on first test deliveries of French wine via rail from Duisburg to Yiwu. The objective was to find out if wine can be trans-

ported safely via rail without the packaging or the product being damaged.

In July, InterRail handled its first train from Prague to Yiwu, which reached its destination on August 4. A regular train connection between Zhengzhou and Munich was launched the same month.

REVIEW 2017

On October 30, the new railway Baku – Tiflis – Kars was taken into operation. The inauguration marked the end of a ten-year project between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. An annual volume of circa one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of freight is expected.

During bilateral meetings in January and Febru-ary 2017, the Head of Azerbaijan’s Railways, Javid Gur-banov, and representatives of the Swiss InterRail Group discussed a more intensive cooperation between both countries. The talks centered on the possibilities in freight traffic via the North-South and South-West Corridors. Azerbaijan, geographically well positioned for traffics from central and eastern Asia to Europe, wants to attract more transit cargo.

For the first time, InterRail participated in the Munich ‘transport logistic’ trade show not only as a guest, but also as an exhibitor. InterRail was part of the exhibi-tors of Logistics Alliance Germany (LAG). During the show, the 2nd international «Railway Business at Transit Speed» conference took place. With the support of RZD and un-der the auspices of CCTT, about 100 invitees attended. Hans Reinhard, Chairman of InterRail, was invited to give a speech on «Improving logistics processes on the trans-continental routes».

Of course, as has become tradition, the InterRail col-leagues also participated again in the Moscow TransRus-sia and TransitKazakhstan in Astana.

In June, InterRail Europe and JF Hillebrand took part in the Bordeaux Vinexpo, presenting the results of their test transports of wine to China. (See also New train connec-tions and products.)

An obligatory event is also the annual railway forum «Strate-gic Partnership 1520», a meeting place every year for over 1,000 companies involved in the broad gauge (1520mm) railway net.

This year’s forum took place in Vienna from February 20 to 22, and InterRail attended this time again, too.

REVIEW 2017

In October, the Board and the Managing Di-rectors of the InterRail Group convened for a meeting in Dubai. On the agenda of the conference were topics ran-ging from the development of single InterRail companies to the challenges in connection with the Chinese Belt-and-Road Initiative to Human Resources.

The latter is a topic that matters a lot to Hans Reinhard, as there is demand for qualified transport and logistics

experts almost everywhere and measures are necessary to remain attractive as an employer. A paper, drawn up beforehand, was presented at the meeting. The Advisory Board is at this time examining it for implementation.

The Advisory Board was installed in 2016; its members are four Managing Directors of the InterRail Group. The Board functions as a counselling body to the holding and contri-butes actively to the strategic orientation of the Group.

REVIEW 2017

SOCIAL COMMITMENT

On the initiative of Sanjeev Dhar, Managing Director Mettler Toledo India, our Indian Inter-

Rail organization participated in the «Daan Utsav» festival, which is celebrated every year in October; the first time in 2009. Formerly known as the «Joy of Giving Week», Daan Utsav now is described as a festival of giving. InterRail do-nated a small sum towards the three tons of rice that Met-tler Toledo gave for malnourished children in Mokhada, a village in the Palgar District.

Different persons take part in the campaign, and thus the support and help offered vary a lot, too. School children,

housewives and CEOs – the participants come from all strata of society and come up with a wide range of help they can give, be it in the form of time, money, resources or talent.

Last year, millions of people attended 1,500 events in 200 cities all over India, collecting several dozen millions worth of donations of money and goods, and giving innumerable volunteer hours.

InterRail Newsflash No. 1-2 / 20188

Mr. Reinhard, where does In-

terRail stand today?

Over the past few years, we had

to adapt our strategy of course

owing to the continuing sanctions

against Russia and the drop in

gas and oil prices. We are no lon-

ger a mere freight agent today;

we are a specialist for rail freight

oriented logistics services; we

use our own and leased equip-

ment. We as InterRail can only

marginally influence the political

frame conditions.

Therefore, also in 2018, our focus is on our strategic orien-

tation and our development within our markets. We will

increasingly concentrate on the Chinese Belt-and-Road

Initiative and continue strengthening our position among

the five biggest block train operators on this trade lane. So

far, we have been able to handle an essential share of the

volume between China and Europe, and we want to build

on that. Moreover, our Group will also work on new, mainly

railway-oriented products along the North-South Corridor,

which means Scandinavia-Russia-Iran-India, but also We-

stern Europe-Iran.

What challenges is InterRail facing in 2018?

On the one hand, we expect transports between China

and Europe to continue increasing. From an economic

and entrepreneurial point of view, this is of course more

than gratifying. Yet at the same time, there are some

obstacles to overcome: fears are that Malaszewicze is not

up to the additional volume. This means alternative rou-

tes have to be defined, such as, for instance, via Kalinin-

grad or Ukraine, of course only on condition that politically

the go-ahead is given. The infrastructure in Europe, with

its insufficient number of locomotives, wagons and with

congested routes presents a challenge, too. Moreover,

expectations as to increased transport volumes with Iran

were dampened owing to non-existent finance transaction

possibilities. And we need additional strategic partners in

order not to be passed left and right in the market by the

global multinationals and especially by the subsidiaries of

state-run railways.

OUTLOOK2018DURING THE REVIEW 2017, WE ASKED HANS REINHARD, CHAIRMAN OF THE INTERRAIL GROUP, FOR HIS ASSESSMENT.

5To me, a successful day at work is...… when the daily planning list has been completed successfully.

What impresses me most in my job is... … the realization of ambitious plans that at first sight seem not to be realizable.

If I were not working in the transport industry… … I would like to start it once again. As station(s) of a trip around the world I would choose... South Africa I would like to... be always honest to myself.

FEDERAL ASSOCIATION SILK ROAD INITIATIVE GERMANY. Founded to act as a central platform for the interests of the German SMEs and as a competent partner for politics and economy, the association (Federal Associa-tion Silk Road Initiative / Bundesverband Deutsche Seiden-strasse Initiative, BVDSI) started operating in Germany a short while ago. The association also wants to be the first point of contact for the economies along the Chinese go-

ELECTRIFICATION OF THE LITHUANIAN EAST-WEST COR-

RIDOR

LITHUANIA. Lithuania plans to electrify the entire East-West Corridor from the Byelorussian border to Klaipeda. The EU supported project will be finished by 2022.

From 2015 to 2017, Lithuania did the first phase, the electri-fication of a 28.6 kilometer connection between Kena at the Byelorussian border and Naujoji Vilnia. Work now continues towards Klaipeda, the other segments are to be tackled this year.

The project also aims at the electrification of the Vilnius rail-way junction by linking it to the Vilnius-Kaunas connection that has already been electrified. This segment is to be adap-ted for trains going 160 km/h.

The connections Kaišiadorys-Radviliškis and Radviliškis-Klai-peda are also to be electrified. Along these routes, a network

of electric contacts and new traction stations are to be instal-led, railway station control systems are to be replaced and the safety and security of the controls enhanced. The contact net-work is to be adapted for trains going up to 250 km/h.

The railway connection from the Lithuanian-Byelorussian border to Klaipeda is part of the international IX B transport corridor. Transports on this route account for about three quarters of the Lithuanian rail freight traffic volume and two thirds of passenger transportation. The electrification is expec-ted to further increase the efficiency of railway activity in the country. (source: railwaypro)
