INTERNSHIP REPORT JULY 2021 Simulation-based analyses on ASF MESSAGE: What did you do in OIE? RESEARCH I have been engaged in the research internship in TADs (Transboundary Animal Disease) section in OIE RRAP. To contribute to controlling the African Swine Fever (ASF) from the perspectives of modelling and infectious disease epidemiology, I conducted and have been developing a modelling study to estimate the socio-economic impacts followed by an outbreak in a hypothetical scenario. Given the technical advice from experts on diseases and modelling study using the network of OIE, I have been able to practice modelling and estimation method as well as to understand the diseases itself and controlling strategy by attending a series of webinars on wild boar and domestic pigs. UNDERSTANDING OIE ACTIVITIES Lots of opportunities to take part in discussions are open for interns by webinars and meetings. In addition to meetings related to TADs, I attended other sections’ meetings to get understand the overall activity. Also, I joined routine meetings hearing weekly updates from each section. What did you learn? This internship allowed me to learn a wider perspective by fields of experts as the biggest takeaway. Through making questionnaires and attending webinars, I found experts could make a discussion with others beyond their backgrounds based on the basic knowledge and interest. For example, one of the interesting things during a webinar is to see the open chat, where various discussions were ongoing by experts with different backgrounds along with presentations. Co- operation among institutions and sectors, and integration of the knowledges are the most important for control and eradication of transboundary animal diseases. OIE can take a role of “catalyst”, enhancing co-operation and integration so that the experts can present their values. Please do not hesitate to apply by the reasons of skills or backgrounds. OIE may welcome those who do not have backgrounds on animal health, as they potentially provide values by integrating their backgrounds with animal health. For example, WAHIS, the website of Information system of animal health around the world has been changed into a cooler design recently. There may be present or new projects that match your interest and OIE projects, so just follow your enthusiasm and keep studying & updating your interest after the acceptance!!
