• Located in Ranson, WV.

• The senior center is non-profit, gaining funds through raffles, donations, grants, and events being hosted.

• It is open Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm.

• I worked as a Recreation Aid for Gloria Hodges, a CTRS of the facility, and as a Bus Aide under the transportation department.

Goals & Objectives

• Within one month, I will plan at least three activities under the assistance of my supervisor.

• I will observe weekly activities performed by my supervisor.

• I will fill out at least three new recreation activity forms within two months, creating activities the center has yet to perform.

• I will set up my special project for the internship with the assistance of my supervisor within the three-month time span.

Goal 1: Create and plan activities for the senior center

• I will create and assist in the marketing of the senior center at least once a month.

• I will learn about finances and grants that fund the senior center at least once a month.

• I will assist in assessments in the home nursing department at least once a month

Goal 2: To get involved with the center outside of the recreation department.

• I will get a CTRS exam booklet to study with within one month of arrival to the internship.

• I will study the terms and questions in said book for one-two hours each weekend.

• I will go over questions with Gloria once a week that I run into trouble with.

Goal 3: To practice for the upcoming CTRS exam.

• I will greet different seniors every day as they come into the center during the internship time.

• While working as a bus aid, I will talk and get to know seniors during bus rides during the internship time span.

• I will participate in activities with the seniors once a week during the internship time span.

Goal 4: To get to know the different seniors that come to the center.

• I will miss no more than one day during the three-month internship span.

• I will participate in weekend activities as they come up during the three-month span.

• I will continue my time as a bus aid during the three-month span to add hours.

Goal 5: To finish 560 hours of internship time.

During my time on the internship, I did some of the following:

Events

While at the senior center, I got to participate in several events:

• Ranson Festival

• Senior Olympics in Keyser, WV,

• I created a program called Camp Silver Wolf, where the local Boys & Girls Club came to the center to do intergenerational activities that have a camping theme.

• Friday activities including bands, cook-outs, and games.

Special Project Set-Up

Special Project- Internet Intervention

• As my special project, I created a program called Internet Intervention. Every Wednesday at 11am throughout July, I would give a presentation about a certain aspect of the internet.

• My goal with this program, was to give the seniors a sense of knowledge that they may have been reluctant to learn, an ability to socialize with their friends and family through emails or social media, and to gain entertainment from internet games and YouTube.

Summary

My internship at the senior center has been a very interesting and fun learning experience. There have been stressful times, but also humorous and silly times.

I currently do not have any future plans, as I am still job hunting. I will need to do my CTRS exam, and make some big changes depending on where my career leads me.
