Parenting Guidelines
NO computers in the kid’s bedrooms– Even without Internet access, kids can still bring in jumpdrive, cd,
(inappropriate time spent)– Can buy USB wireless internet access
Do I give my kid’s a laptop or phone– Creates issues (kid’s don’t have the level of self control or
maturity)– Just because a parent might have it, friend, or older sibling doesn’t
mean they need it– Should all children in the family be treated the same (is it a
privilege
Where do you put computer
High traffic public area Limit access to any technology (like anything,
chocolate) no child should have limitless REWARDS: If child thrives on a certain piece
or technology device, it can be a great motivation MAKE IT A POSITIVE THING! (You can have this much time, once homework is done)
Technology Babysitter
It is easy as a parent to get caught up with allowing kids to use technology when you need time to do something, however the consequences are:
If…But When
What do you do?– Don’t Overreactive. Understand that the moment
is going to happen and prepare yourself – Relationship with your kids. Postive and nurturing
relationship, so child feels comfortable to come talk. Also taking the parent role and checking history and you may have to have that conversation.
If…But When
Have family discussion and talk about principles of Internet Safety– Help them realize that you know the risks of the
internet and that can talk to them. (Be Frank: The day is going to come when you will encounter some of these things. Go through scenarios: example: movie that doesn’t make you feel right.
– Let them know that feelings are natural, but what is appropriate
This is a War
They were attacked, and something was forced upon them
Don’t wait until it happens, but talk about it prior.
Talk to spouse and figure out what your guidelines are. Then have a family council in healthy and constructive environment.
If…But When
Address all things that kids might encounter: What else kids encounter besides pornography are such things as making bombs, picking locks, sneaking out, cheating, etc
Addiction
There are some things that don’t make any difference how old you are:– Addiction– Pornography
Manage media exposure: values
Citizenship: have the right to share and speak out about values and be a citizen. Silence is consent
In violation of values
Chat Rooms
The Point: To talk to people and most of the time do not know
You can’t accidentally get in a chat room Anonymous -Breed people that say things they don’t
normally say No reason to legitimately be in a chat room( Unless
you are an undercover officer) Where are they? Appears in a lot of areas (Online
gaming, sporting websites, etc.
Instant messaging
Particular Applications: Yahoo Messengers You Invite people, having chats with people you know Different from chat rooms, but still a danger Who are their friends? What is the history? A lot of it is
innocent, but sometimes they may meet someone on the internet and invite them to instant messages (May say they are talking to Susan across the screen, maybe they are or maybe they are not)
Look for clues: What you to leave or close screen when you come by, shorthand (Adding emotion LOL, ROTF-Rolling on the floor
Shorthand
PA - Parent Alert PAL-Parents are listening PANB – Parents are nearby PAW-Parents are watching POS- Parents over shoulder PITR- Parents in the room
Cyberbullying
Situation where a person was instant messaging, got hate messages, and committed suicide.
Benefit of Instant Messaging
Doesn’t interrupt flow of work
