Harnessing the power of the Internet of ThingsCanadian tech startup Connio Inc. was founded with one key aim: to help enterprises and entrepreneurs bring innovative Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to market rapidly.

To achieve this objective, the company began developing CONNIO—a new IoT platform that offers fully integrated capabilities for application development, big data analytics and usage-based billing, with extreme data durability and high availability data access.

To ensure that the CONNIO platform could support an explosion of instrumented devices and networking technologies, the company looked for a database foundation with the flexibility to meet its enterprise-level requirements.

Emre Birol, Founder and CEO of Connio, says: “To build a platform capable of harnessing the full potential of the IoT, we needed a high-performance data layer capable of storing and processing a huge variety of unstructured data models. Support for stream computing was essential, and we looked for a NoSQL database solution that would enable us to query JSON data in-flight efficiently and cost-effectively.

“As a startup, minimizing our capital spend is crucial. For that reason, we targeted a cloud-based solution that we could scale quickly and easily as the user community for our CONNIO IoT platform grew.”

Finding the right fit

After testing a range of NoSQL databases, Connio selected IBM® Cloudant®—a fully managed JSON database service, built with Apache CouchDB™—to act as the data layer for its innovative IoT hosting platform.

Built to ensure that the flow of data between an application and the database remains highly performant, Cloudant enables Connio to offer its clients uninterrupted access to application data both on- and offline.

Emre Birol recalls: “What initially attracted us to Cloudant was its excellent web API. Cloudant stores all data in the non-proprietary, schemaless JSON format, and every document is easily accessible via standard HTTP—perfect for our cloud-based platform.

“The built-in data replication and synchronization ensures 24/7 availability, while elastic scalability allows us to grow on demand. Cloudant technology was by far the best fit for us as IoT service providers.”

To offer a solution for clients that needed private IoT clouds on-premise, Connio added support for IBM Cloudant Data Layer Local Edition to accommodate large-scale IoT projects with specific requirements.

“Clients can now install Cloudant Local in their own data centers to run their own DBaaS—and still offer our CONNIO platform as an application enablement service to their customers, or for internal development projects,” says Emre Birol.“What initially attracted us to

High performance, low maintenance

IBM Cloudant gives Connio a highly reliable, super-scalable, high-performance database in the cloud. As the data layer underlying the entire CONNIO platform for device and API management, Connio now relies on Cloudant to store billions of data points.

Emre Birol comments: “Some of our larger clients generate around half a million data points every single day. Thanks to the impressive scalability of Cloudant, we are able to accommodate huge volumes of data easily—we simply scale up as and when we need to.

“What’s more, our multi-tenant Cloudant solution means that we didn’t have to make any infrastructure investments or hire a full-time database administrator. This enables us to keep our costs down and focus on developing and improving the CONNIO platform.

“Most impressive, however, is Cloudant’s incredible schema flexibility, which allows us to handle all of the different data models generated by our clients’ different devices.”

Running a smart city from the cloud

Supported by IBM Cloudant, the CONNIO platform is taking the world by storm. Connio is currently working closely with Türk Telekom to track devices and manage vertical applications in the country’s first smart city project in Karaman.

Storing billions of data points, the CONNIO platform has allowed the city to set up intelligent traffic monitoring, parking, refuse collection and irrigation systems—amongst others—to help improve Karaman’s public services.

Emre Birol says: “The CONNIO platform enables our clients to combine data in exciting new ways. One particularly exciting example of this is optimizing street routes for ambulances with ambulance location and traffic light pattern data, helping get patients to hospitals faster.”

He concludes: “We simply would not be able to offer services for large-scale, ground-breaking projects like the Karaman smart city without Cloudant. The IBM Cloudant data layer fades into the background of our IoT platform—enabling clients to create data-driven applications from vast networks of devices.
