What is the Internet
#n short$ the #nternet is a worldwide network of smaller networks" % network is basically a group
of computers agreeing to talk to each other oer some son of wire$ electromagnetic wae$ or fiber
optic cable" &hysically$ computers in a network are connected together by cables that allow the
computers to share information" !omputers can communicate with each other if all speak the
same language" !omputers that are 'on the #nternet' all use the same protocols to send
information back and forth" %s long as a computer uses these protocols$ it doesn(t matter what
type of hardware or software it uses" #n addition$ eery computer that is attached to the #nternet
also has an address that helps other computers locate it"
The #nternet is a worldwide network of computers$ and the World Wide Web is the most popular
way of using the #nternet to organi)e and link information" The Web uses hyperte*t to link docu+
ments with a graphical 'point+and+click' interface" ,ther ways of using the #nternet include e+
mail$ file transfer protocol -.T&/$ Telnet$ and Usenet"
The #nternet began as a proect of U"s" epartment of efense called %&%34T" The goal of this
proect was to design a nationwide computer network that could withstand maor disasters" #f one part of the network is destroyed$ the other parts would be able to stay up due to the decentrali)ed
structure of the network" %t the ery beginning$ there were four computers in the U"" attached to
the network6 today$ there are millions all oer the world"
#n the #nternet(s early days -the 1780s and 90s/$ only goernment$ military$ and educational
institutions had computers connected to the #nternet" The #nternet was originally intended to be
used for research and scholarly communications" But as it grew$ the #nternet began to be used for
informal communication$ entertainment$ and eentually commercial purposes with the
connection of businesses in the 1770s" 3ow re:uests for information$ such as product aailability
or credit status$ can be made and results returned in a few seconds$ een though the message may
hae traeled thousands of miles oer the #nternet"
%t the center of the #nternet are the serers" erers are computers that store lots of information
for other computers to download and iew" When you look at a Web page$ you are a client and
the computer you look at is the serer$ sending its Web page to you oer a tangle of wires$
routers$ and switches"
Today(s #nternet is a web of connectiity including telephone serice proiders$ regional #nternet
erice &roiders -#&s/$ local #&s$ and millions of end users who access the information or
post sites on the #nternet ia an #&" The telephone companies or other large proiders sell
connectiity
What is the Internet?
to egional #&s who lease part of their own connectiity to local #&s or end users" The local
#&s then also sell pan of their connectiity to other end users" 3eedless -to say$ this can lead to a
lot of #&s+by 1779 there were oer 5$000 #&s in the United tates alone" %nd some of the large
proiders$ like %,; and !ompuere$ sell access directly -0 end users"
The #nternet works smoothly because all the companies inoled hae agreed to e*change traffic

-data/ with one another" %n end user -like a library in %labama or a person with a home
computer/ is part of a local #&s network$ which is part of a regional #&s network$ which is part
of an een larger U"" network$ which connects to a worldwide network and all these networks
talking to each other oer the globe are the #nternet<
This illustrates how the World Wide Web is one of many #nternet applications"
