Step #1: Define The Question
• Ask The Client (Internal – External)• What would they like to know?• What would they need to know?• Place the question in context? (ie, North America
vs Europe, Canada vs United States)• Consider possible sources for answers

Step #2: Evaluate Sources
Consider:
• Relevancy – Does the possible sources have pertinent and timely data?
• Access (# of users) – How many individuals can access the source to verify the data?
• Value added services – Are there value added services associated with the sources? (ie, alerts, RSS Feeds, monthly analysts reports, etc)
• Price - Will you be using a free or fee based source? Do you have a budget?

Step #3: Select The Right Source
Consider Using:
• Search Engines – Broader and general queries to get familiar with the subject
• Publications – To gather timely expertise from industry professionals
• Web 2.0 – To seek out what individuals are saying on blogs and in their social networks

Step #4: Find The Answer
Consider:
• Keyword(s) selection – Content vs Containing• Syntax selection - Using +, -, AND, OR, NOT to
filter results• Timeframe – Know when the data was gathered
or published to provide timely intelligence

Step #5: Producing Intelligence
Main objectives:
• Matching possible answers with question - Relevant gathered information MUST correspond to client’s question.
• Supporting decisions w/ facts – Information MUST either:
• Substantiate present assumptions by key decision makers
OR
• Uncover new opportunities
