Using Internet Applications

Z

Scope of the Lesson

• Internet, Intranet and Extranet• Internet Tools and Services• HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)• FTP (File Transfer Protocol)• E-mail• IRC (Internet Relay Chat)• WWW (World Wide Web)• Gopher• WAIS

Z

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the lesson, you will be

familiar with the internet applications and

its uses.

• Justify internet applications.

• Analyze the internet protocols being

used for the internet.

Z

Learning Outcomes

• Determine the theoretical perspectives

that influence the internet applications.

• Compare the internet tools and services

that are very useful for the applications of

the internet.

Z

Internet, Intranet and Extranet

• What is Internet? • It is a “Network of Network” that

includes millions of public and private, academic, business and government networks locally and globally.• It is linked by copper wires, wireless

connection, fiber optics and other technologies.

Z

Hardware and Softwareof the Internet

• Modem• Device that enable computers to

communicate through the ISP.

• Computer• In addition to a modem, you need a

hardware capable for handling multiple data types.

Z

Hardware and Softwareof the Internet

• Software• Two types of software’s required to

enable your PC as an internet PC.• Communication Software to

establish connection.• Client Software for browsing, e-

mail and news. These software’s are provided by windows itself.

Z

Applications of Internet

• Downloaded programs and files• E-mail• Voice and Video Conferencing• E-commerce• File Sharing• Information Browsing• Search the web addresses using search engines• Chat and a lot more

Z

Disadvantage ofthe Internet

• Theft of Personal Information: such as names, address, credit card number, etc.

• Virus Threats: nothing but a program which disrupts the normal functioning of the system.

• Spamming: refers to receiving unwanted e-mails in bulk, which provide no purpose and needlessly obstruct the entire system.

Z

Disadvantage ofthe Internet

• Pornography: this is perhaps the biggest threat related to children’s healthy mental life. A very serious issue concerning the internet.

“Though, internet can create destruction and its misuse can be very fatal, the advantages of it outweigh its disadvantages.”

Z

Intranet

• What is Intranet?

• Internal company network that uses internet standards (HTML, HTTP and TCP/IP protocols) and software.

• Accessed only by authorized person, especially members or employees of the organization.

Z

Intranet Security

• Two levels of Security Required:

• Internal

• Can be imposed by public Key Security and Encryption Key.

• External

• Through Firewall.

Z

Intranet Security

• What is Firewall?

• Security device located between firm’s internal network (intranet) and external network (internet)

• Regulates access into and out of company’s network based on a set of rules.“Needs to be upgraded from time to time to check potential security problems.”

Z

Applications of Intranet

• Sharing of company policies & rules • Access employee database • Distribution of circular or office orders• Access products and customer data• Sharing of information of common interest• Launching of department homepages• Submission of reports• Corporate telephone directories

Z

Disadvantages ofthe Intranet

• Management Problem• A company may not have person to

update their intranet on a routine basis• Limited bandwidth for the business• Security Problem• Unauthorized access• Abuse Access• Denial of service

Z

Disadvantages ofthe Intranet

• Productivity Problem• Information overload lowers

productivity• True purpose of intranet is unknown to

many employees or departments• Hidden or unknown complexity and

costs

Z

Extranet

• What is Extranet?• Extranet is an intranet for outside

authorized users using same internet technology.• Inter-organizational information

system.• Enable outsiders to work together with

company’s employees• Open to selected suppliers, customers

and other business partners.

Z

Extranet - Example

• Dealers / Distributors have access to product files such as:

• Product specifications• Pictures• Images• Information to answer customers

queries.

Z

Benefits of Extranet

• Improved quality• Lower travel costs• Lower administrative and other overhead costs• Reduced paper works• Delivery of accurate information on time• improved customer service• better communication• Overall improvement in business effectiveness.

Z

Disadvantages of the Extranet

•The suppliers and the customers do not have technical knowledge• Faceless contact• Information can be misused by other competitors• Fraud may be possible• Technical employees are required

What are the MajorInternet Tools and Services• HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)• FTP (File Transfer Protocol)• E-mail• IRC (Internet Relay Chat)• WWW (World Wide Web)• Gopher• WAIS

Z

HTTP (HypertextTransfer Protocol)

• Allows setting rules that computers use to move files from one computer to another on the internet• It is the most common transfer protocol used on the internet• You can see this protocol often before the URL. • E.g. http://www.google.com

Z

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

• Allows the transfer or copying of files from one computer to another• Ideal for procuring or sending files to a remote computer• FTP programs are available freely• Modern browsers have built-in FTP capabilities

Z

E-Mail

• The most popular use of the Internet• Available for free on the web• Gmail• Yahoomail• Hotmail• Valid email address consists of a username and a domain name separated by the “@” sign.• E.g. [email protected]

Z

IRC (Internet Relay Chat)

• Allows real time, text based communication through the internet• Organized by topic of interest through “channels”• Discussion occurs in “Chat Rooms”• Some website have built-in chat rooms.

Z

IRC (Internet Relay Chat)

Z

WWW (World Wide Web)

• Invented in 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee, the web is the fastest-growing internet service • Based on HTML(Hyper Text Markup Language) allowing users to access data in multimedia format• Simplest unit is the webpage, primarily a document encoded in HTML format that can be accessed using a browser

Z

WWW (World Wide Web)

• HTML links contents within a web page to each other as well as to other web pages through a hyperlink• Each page has an address, a URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

Z

Gopher

• Allows user to access files from a different computers by looking through hierarchical menus to finds specific topics. A document may be text, sounds, image or other type of file.• A program called Jughead can be used to search for topics found with gopher files.

Z

Gopher

Z

WAIS (Wide AreaInformation Services)

• WAIS is a search engine developed for the internet• It allows one to search the complete text of a document
