APPLICATIONS IN LIBRARIES
Librarians use many Internet communications and service utilities.
Some popular applications include:
Electronic mail (E-mail)TelnetFile Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Electronic mail (E-mail): Used to… communicate with colleagues and
customers. participate in electronic discussion groups, share experiences and ideas with other
librarians
Telnet: Used to… to connect to remote computer resources explore other library catalogs, access commercial and noncommercial
database services, and
File Transfer Protocol (FTP): Used to… obtain software programs, text, images, and
sound files from the net and then offer them to their customers.
contribute to the Internet community by making library catalogs and local databases available on the network;
EFFECTS ON LIBRARIES

between … libraries themselves, libraries and suppliers, libraries and users.
World Standard of evaluation developed
EFFECT ON LIBRARIES
The Virtual Library is a collection of full text e-books, journals
and databases from various publishers and sources
which can be accessed by remote users at any time from any internet connected computer,
laptop or other portable device.
Development of Virtual Library
Supplement to Libraries’ CollectionsInternet is considered as a supplement to
collections of libraries, in a way … as a substitute for databases on CD-ROMs
(such as accessing online databases), and a way of saving on subscription charges for
printed journals (accessing online journals),
But INTERNET is NOT a REPLACEMENT for printed books.
Administrative Effects
Internet’s main administrative effect is on.. staff’s satisfaction, motives, speed and ease of services, users’ satisfaction, and turnouts, But it has the LEAST EFFECT ON
LIBRARIES’ BUDGETS.
Qualities of Librarian
Internet Technology has replaced the traditional work.
So, competency requirements for the librarians are also changed.
Qualities of Librarian Now, Librarians should have…–to master information technology –deep knowledge in their field (not only
librarianship) –good interpersonal skills –knowledge of the basics of marketing –public relations to successfully sell
library services.
User training The importance of user training is
increase even more, to help them –to navigate in the onrush of
traditional and electronic media, –to develop new search strategies
–create personal databases, etc.
The Internet is being heavily used for performing various library functions such as reference work, classification and cataloguing, document delivery service, subscription to online journals, etc.
ICT has brought change in library objectives; libraries have become the intermediators of information, the focus of the work has shifted from collections to information services.
