The call for papers will focus on one of the following two specific aspects of the overall theme of the conference: Sub-theme 1: Biological studies of Rafflesia and Amorpophallus. How much do we know about this genera in the twenty-first century: Examples of subjects: Taxonomy – Phylogeny – Seed Banks – Biology – Anatomy – Conservation Sub-theme 2: Conservation management of Rafflesia & Amorpophallus : How knowledge is applied to better understand these plants, destruction of the environment, the extinction of species, and rapid and uncontrolled urbanization. Examples of subjects: Gardens and Collection - Conservation Management – Publishing – Education – Legislation related to plants and their use paper should be submitted to [email protected] with latest submission is in 15 August 2015. Sumatra is home to two giant flowers, Rafflesia arnoldii and Amorphophallus titanum, as well as their relatives. These two giant flowers are endemic and rarely found outside their natural habitat. Rafflesia spp., in particular are very difficult to cultivate. The uniqueness of both species has caused them to become flagship species, and both are commonly used as symbols in important national document and even by international organizations. On the other hand, many people are still unable to differentiate between the species as the local name for both, “bunga bangkai” (corpse flower) refers to the smell they produce. The rarity of these endemic flora means that some aspects of biological lives are yet to be unveiled, while their natural habitat are rapidly changing over time. There is not much time left for expert to do research and apply the results in order to produce a foundation frame-work for the future of these giant flowers. Intensive research and collaboration between experts and government is urgently required. The Indonesian Institute of Sciences and Bogor Botanic Gardens, in collaboration with the local government of Bengkulu and Ministry of Environment and Forestry, are urged to hold a symposium to discuss the future of these iconic species. The forum will be a global meeting for stake-holders to share their experiences especially those who work in scientific institution, tourism and public education sectors. The symposium will take place in Grage Horizon Hotel, Bengkulu 14-17 September 2015. The aims of this event is to collate ideas from all participants (botanist, practitioners, students, lecturers), regarding the long term conservation program for Rafflesia arnoldii and Amorphophallus titanum. Therefore, we would like to extend an invitation to your institution to join us in International Symposium of Rafflesia & Amorphophallus 2015. Your participation will be highly appreciated and meaningful to our conservation programs, helping to ensure a home and a future for these amazing giant flowers.
