Field Activity 1: Plant & Animal Identification
PurposeThis activity will help you familiarize yourself with local flora and fauna of the Chiang Mai area.
As with all assignments in the Foundations Activity Field Guide, you will need to find ten (10) Thai words related to the activity to translate (including into Thai writing).
AssignmentDuring the course we will encounter an amazing amount of biodiversity. By collecting detailed information on at least six (6) unique species, you will acquire a more focused understanding of how a few species fit into the diverse ecologies of these areas. During field activities, take the time to carefully observe the organisms around you. Combine your first-hand observations with available field guides, readings, and conversations with local people (hike guides, host families, etc). This process will enhance your own, and the group’s, understanding of this organism’s part in the greater ecosystem.
Complete 6 entries to the greatest degree possible. You may choose to do more, but 8 poorly described species does not substitute for 6 well described species. It will typically take multiple sources of information, and several revisits to complete each entry. You should not need to use the internet, local instructors and field guides should provide sufficient information.
• 6 total described species including:At least two (2) animal (any animal other than a household pet)At least two (2) plants
• All organisms need to be numbered and listed in Table of Contents

PurposeTo gain a greater understanding of Thai media.
AssignmentOver the course of Foundations course, take time to observe the four (4) following areas of media: advertising (video and/or print), television, magazines, and newspaper. Answer the questions below as well as write any additional observations that you make. If you feel limited by your Thai for this activity (for example don’t understand everything going on in a television show), talk with your host family and/or other students to help you fill in the blanks.
AdvertisingWhat are they advertising?
How do they advertise?
Are there any social values advertised? How?
Foundations Activity Field Guide! 21
Television What types of relationships do you notice? Compare and contrast these views of relationships to those you might see in the U.S.
Select one relationship in the show to focus on. Do you think that the relationship portrayed is realistic? Think about your own interactions with your host family, Thai teacher, and other Thais.
Foundations Activity Guide! 22
Magazine:What is the layout of the magazine? What are the prominent images?
What is the subject matter of the main story/stories?
NewspaperWhat are the names of the two main English language newspapers?
Compare and contrast these two newspapers. Do either of them portray a specific viewpoint?
How do the layouts of Thai and English-language newspaper differ?
Foundations Activity Field Guide! 23
General:What happens every evening around 8pm?
Does your host family have a reaction to the 8pm programming (if you aren’t watching TV at this time, ask them about it).

Field Activity 3: Familial Structure Observations
PurposeThis activity will help you think about the familial roles within your Thai host family and how this can (or cannot) be extended to societal relationships and roles in general.
AssignmentThroughout the Foundations course, observe and discuss the following with your family in order to answer the following questions.
How many people are living in your household?
How is everyone related? Draw a family diagram or tree
Are there people outside of the nuclear family living at your house or nearby? If so, who and where? If not, where do extended family members live?
What are the interactions like between children and parents, siblings, with you?
Foundations Activity Guide! 26
What do you observe about “Pi-Nong” relationships? What does it mean to be a “Pi” and what does it mean to be a “Nong”?
What does your family want and/or expect for their children. If there are no children in your host family, what does your host family think about the future of the youth/younger generation?
Since ASEAN is becoming a prominent issue in the region, ask your host family what they think about ASEAN. Do they or have they learned about it in school? Do they think it will benefit, harm, or have no effect on future generations in Thailand?

Field Activity 4: Chiang Mai City Information
Purpose: To gain a greater understanding of Chiang Mai and the surrounding area.
Assignment: Throughout the Foundations course you will gather information about Chiang Mai. You will have a few specific opportunities to learn about the city (during your city orientation scavenger hunt as well as the old city/historical tour) However, you will need to gather additional information outside of these times. Use both free time (which may be hard to come by during homestays) and trips with your host family to make additional observations. Furthermore, discuss with your host family and other students to fill in any information you may not have been able to experience first-hand.
What is the public transportation in Chiang Mai like? Think about how you get to and from ISDSI. If you are provided with a ride from your host family, talk with other students and observe what you see on the roads.
What is the walkability of the city like? What makes the city an easy or difficult place to walk? Is walking a realistic means of getting around the city? Why or why not?
Foundations Activity Guide! 30
What do you notice at malls and markets? Who patronizes each of these? Compare and contrast the items being sold at each of these locations.
In your neighborhood, what do you notice about the community? Does your host family talk often with neighbors or are they more isolated within their home? Is there a sense of community in the neighborhood? Feel free to compare and contrast to your home community. Provide examples.

AssignmentList the different locations that you visit, including the name, what they are, and why are important and/or interesting. Draw a diagram or map of the route you took in the old city.
Example: Wat Jed Yod, a temple at the edge of the city (off the superhighway). The name is derived from the unique 7 peaks (chedis) on the top of the temple.
