    The University o Stavanger (UiS) has approximately 8.500

    students and 1.200 academic and administrative staf

    members. The University ofers a wide range o study and

    research programmes.

    There are three aculties Science and Technology, Social Sciencesand Arts and Education. The Museum o Archaeology is also a parto the University. Many o our research activities are carried out in

    cooperation with our af liate, the International Research Instituteo Stavanger AS (IRIS) and in cooperation with other universities,research institutes and regional, national and international industry.

    Commitment to innovation in research, teaching and

    learning

    UiS aims to strengthen its reputation as an innovative universitywith particularly strong basis in technology and proessional trainingprogrammes. As expressed in the institutional strategic plan, thiswill be the overall leading idea o development or the period 2009 2020. The strategy states that all programmes oered at theUniversity o Stavanger shall include introduction to innovation andstimulation or entrepreneurship among students.

    The University o Stavanger oers a variety o degree programmesin English, mainly at the master and Ph.D. levels. Each o the threeaculties oers a range o exchange programmes. The university alsooers a one-year programme in Norwegian Language and Culture,which qualies students or admission to any university programmein Norway, taught in Norwegian.

    A modern campusThe main university campus is situated a mere 2,5 miles (5 km) away

    rom the city centre, where two o the universitys departmentsare also situated. We welcome students to a modern universitywith a state o the art learning environment, comprehensive libraryresources and wireless Internet access. The Sports Centre oersa 600 sqm tness and weight room, sports arena, boulder andclimbing wall, squash courts and a wide range o exercise classes.Other services include a bookshop, reading rooms and severalcaeterias and a coee shop.     Stavanger is situated on the southwest coast o Norway. The city

    was ounded in 1125 and is today Norways ourth largest city. TheStavanger region has approximately 300.000 inhabitants and isNorways most productive region.

    The Stavanger region has been the national hub or innovativeindustry or several decades, partly due to the oil industry but also aresult o a spirit o innovation and entrepreneurship which existedlong beore the petroleum industry. Stavanger is the European oiland energy capital and has strong industrial and nancial clusters.The region is known or its success in the triple helix o university,industry and government relations.

    The Norwegian Higher EducationSystem

    Norway has seven universities, 24 university colleges, two

    national colleges o the arts and 29 private institutions o

    higher education. Most higher education institutions are

    state-run, including the University o Stavanger.

    The Norwegian Degree Structure

    Norway ollows the objectives o the Bologna process in Europeanhigher education, which has led to the implementation o a 3 + 2 + 3degree system with a Bachelor, Master and PhD structure ollowingthe European standards (see gure above).

    Courses are measured in studiepoeng according to the ECTSstandard (European Credit Transer System). The ull-time workloador one academic year is 60 ECTS.

    Grades or undergraduate and postgraduate examinations areawarded according to a graded scale rom A (highest) to F (lowest),with E as the minimum pass grade. A pass/ail mark is given or someexaminations.

    Currently, there are over 12.000 international students studying inNorway.

    Opportunities or InternationalStudents

    The University o Stavanger oers ull-time Master programmes,postgraduate diplomas and courses and also a student exchangeprogramme, where courses are oered in various subject areas atboth the bachelor and master level. While the degree programmes

    are open to applicants rom all over the world, our exchangeprogramme is limited to students whose home institution has anexchange agreement with the University o Stavanger.

    The University o Stavanger also oers a one year language coursethat allows students to qualiy or regular study programmes taughtin Norwegian.

    The academic year comprises two semesters (autumn and spring)and traditionally runs rom mid-August to mid-June.

    Admissions and Applications

    The application deadline varies according to the programme.Exchange students:

    1 May or the autumn semester and 1 November or the springsemester.International Master Programmes:

    15 November or programmes commencing the ollowing academicyear in August.Norwegian Language and Culture programme:

    Cost of Living: All applicants should be able to documentnancial means equivalent to ull unding by the Norwegian StateEducational Loan Fund at the current rate. For the academic year2010-2011 this amounts to NOK 90.000. I you plan to stay or onesemester, only hal the amount is required. The amount does not includeairare to and rom Norway but should cover all living costs while inthe country.

    Language RequirementsProciency in English is required or admission to Masterprogrammes and the programme in Norwegian Language andCulture. Applicants to these programmes must document theirknowledge o English with suf cient scores rom one o theollowing tests:

    Test o English as a oreign language (ETS TOEFL) with a minimumscore o 550 (500) (paper based), 213 (170) (computer based) or 60(80) (internet-based). For more inormation please check the ollow-ing link: www.toe.orgInternational English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a

    Housing

    The cost o student housing varies rom approximately NOK 2.200to NOK 3.500 per month. The rooms are modestly urnished. At present the University oStavanger does not guarantee housing or all international students.

    Orientation Week

    Orientation Week is obligatory or all new international students.This service is designed to help international students settle intotheir lives, both at UiS and in Norway. Orientation Week consistso sessions where students receive practical inormation regard-ing their academic programme (registration, exams, tutorials etc.)as well as inormation about residence permits, banks, the town,the region, the health system and so on.     Norwegian Language Course

    The University o Stavanger oers an introduction course inNorwegian or all the international students. The evening

    Krzyszto Kuczynski (26), PolandStudy programme: Master o Science in International Hotel and Tourism Leadership

    Working in a ve-star hotel in London, Krzyszto was planning a masters degree in tourismmanagement in the UK. On holiday in Stavanger, he changed his mind. I discovered that the University here was a great opportunity and that Stavanger was EuropeanCapital o Culture 2008. I thought: Wow! Things are really happening here.Krzyszto has never regretted his decision.

    Things could not have been better or me. Some o the lecturers are antastic, the courses are greatand we have an extremely good communication with the lecturers. My riends in other countries areimpressed when they hear about it. I also work part-time in a hotel. I want to stay on ater the mastersdegree to learn Norwegian, because there are many job opportunities here.

    Ai-Chu Chang (38), TaiwanStudy programme: Norwegian Language and Culture programme

    Born and raised in Taiwan, Ai-Chu already had a bachelors degree in Radiological Technology whenshe started a master programme in Medical Physics in Canada. She soon changed her mind and starteda bachelor in Enigneering instead. Now she wants to nish her studies at the University o Stavanger.

    She started with the Norwegian Language and Culture programme to learn Norwegian, and is nowstudying at the Bachelor programme o Petroleum Technology in the norwegian language.

    My partner lives here, and Stavanger is a amous oil city. I ound that I like engineering a lot and Illprobably go or a masters degree as well. Petroleum research is very interesting, especially in an oilcountry like Norway.

    With a master`s degree in Mechanical Engineering rom Universit de Nantes in France, Axel wanted tospecialize within the Oshore Technology eld.

    - I am aiming towards a career in the oshore industry. With my ambitions, I couldnt have gone muchurther in France and it was natural to choose one o the best universities or Oshore Technology -UiS.     Join an international and vibrant programme with students rom many countries. You will interact withproessors with strong local, national and international research links rom a variety o disciplines. TheNorwegian School o Hotel Management (NHS) highlights research-based education and established in2001 the Scandinavian Journal o Hospitality and Tourism.

    NHS is the second oldest hotel school in the world, and is a member o the Leading Hotel Schools o theWorld. We have oered education to hospitality proessionals since 1912. Since 1992, NHS has oeredan MSc in International Hotel and Tourism administration and is currently the only institution in Norway

    oering a Master in International Hotel and Tourism Leadership in English.

    The master programme can be accomplished either at the Norwegian School o Hotel Management orthrough a combination o studies in Stavanger and abroad.

    Learning Outcomes

    The study programme will provide you with an in-depth understanding o international hotel, restau-rant and tourism themes and issues. Individual learning and personal improvement is stimulated throughtailored courses with an emphasis on problem-based learning.     120 ECTS 2 year programme

    The Joint Master o Arts in Migration and Intercultural Relations is an interdisciplinary and transculturalprogramme jointly developed by the University o Stavanger in Norway, the University o Oldenburg inGermany, the Portuguese Open University in Portugal, the University o Nova Gorica in Slovenia, theUniversity o Zagreb in Croatia and the University o South Bohemia in the Czech Republic.The programme has been developed with support rom the European Commissions Curriculum Develop-ment Programme, part o the Erasmus programme o the Directorate-General or Education and Culture.

    Programme Structure and Content

    The Joint Master o Arts in Migration and Intercultural Relations is a two year ull-time programme witha blended learning approach, i.e. ICT-supported distance learning elements combined with on-siteteaching and student and teacher mobility. The programme incorporates interdisciplinary andintercultural perspectives on migration. During the course o the programme the candidate must presentindividual coursework papers, complete an internship and conduct research as a basis or a thesis o 30ECTS. The candidate must earn credits rom a minimum o three o the awarding institutions. English isthe language o instruction or the programme. In the rst year, the candidate must complete 60 ECTSo coursework. In the second year, the candidate is required to apply theoretical and methodologicalknowledge in order to conduct independent research and to work proessionally in relevant elds duringthe course o the internship.

    Learning Outcomes

    A student, upon successul completion o the programme, shall have acquired a detailed overview

    o historical and contemporary migration processes, their structures and consequences, as well asexpert knowledge in specic areas. They will also have the ability to critically evaluate categories andapproaches o migration research and to apply them in a reective manner; to dene problems andresearch questions and design and conduct research projects independently. They will also acquirecompetencies in teamwork in intercultural and transcultural contexts and handling new media andcommunication technologies.

    Proessional Qualications

    The Joint Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations qualies graduates or proessional andacademic work within the area o migration and in various intercultural contexts.     The programme recognises the central role played by literacy in our society. The written languageis a key actor in social organisation and cultural development, and the medium o a wide range ocommunication technologies. It is oten claimed that the central role o reading and texts is one o themost important characteristics o modern societies. A good understanding o the various aspects oliteracy, both contemporary and historical, is thereore essential or a ull understanding o how thissociety works, and orms a key asset or the ef cient participation therein.

    The aculty has an Erasmus exchange agreement with the Department o English Language at the

    University o Glasgow. During the programme, students have the option o spending a spring semester inGlasgow, either in their rst or second year.

    Learning outcomes

    The programme combines theoretical and applied approaches to provide a balanced understanding othe nature and unctions o reading a nd the written language.

    Proessional Qualications

    The Master o Arts in Literacy Studies qualies graduates or a wide variety o careers within areas suchas education, the media, libraries, publishing and cultural administration. Successul graduates canqualiy or admission to the Ph.D. programme in Literacy Studies at the University o Stavanger.

    THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC AND DANCEThe Department o Music and Dance oers a great variety o study programmes in music and dance. It is located in the idyllic Bjergsted Park,together with proessional cultural actors like the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, and Stavanger Jazz Forum. The Department has morethan 200 students pursuing a range o courses in classical music, jazz, voice, music education, dance education and music production andrecording.     The Postgraduate Diploma in Music Perormance is a study in instrumental or vocal perormance. Theprogramme is especially aimed at international students or others who want to dedicate a year toconcentrate on a limited section o the repertoire (e.g. Norwegian music), technical studies, or simply tostudy with a certain teacher ater having graduated rom a university or academy in Norway or abroad.Normally the programme would orm a year o specialization ater e.g. a master degree.     A substantial eature o the Master programme is a nine-month research project. At UiS, the students willbe part o an international research group working in the oreront o organelle biology, environmentaladaptation o plants and microorganisms, and computational biology. The students will acquire experi-ence in various analytical techniques and research methods, and get training in presentation o scienticresults. During the rst year the students attend classes in biophysical chemistry, bioinormatics, andpractical courses in molecular biology. Optional subjects can be chosen rom courses in environmentalscience, ood science, chemistry, or computational biology.

    Learning OutcomesDuring the M.Sc. in Biological Chemistry, the student will acquire a theoretical basis within chemical andmolecular biology methods and master practical techniques such as PCR, heterological protein expres-sion, isolation o organelles and know how to apply methods rom biophysical chemistry. The studentwill master the application o methods rom bioinormatics or obtaining and analyzing properties obiologically important molecules such as DNA, RNA, as well as proteins and enzymes. During work withthe master thesis, the student will acquire knowledge within a special research eld and place obtainedresults in an international perspective. During the writing o the thesis the student will have gained aninternational standard or scientic documentation. The graduates will also have developed valuabletranserable skills in communication, problem-solving, and scientic investigations.

    This programme aims to provide motivated students with the knowledge and skills necessary to becomeresponsible water managers and engineers. The programme incorporates two streams o specialisation Oshore Environmental Engineering and Water Science and Technology.

    The main aim o the specialisation Ofshore Environmental Engineering is to combine subjects in o-shore oil and gas exploration, operations and maintenance, production technologies and environmentalmanagement. The programme suits students who are interested in practical, technological and adminis-trative techniques or sound environmental management in the oshore industries.

    The specialisation in Water Science and Technology is ocused on aquatic chemistry and ecology, andtechnologies or water and wastewater treatment. The specialisation seeks to provide students withundamental and advanced insights into aquatic chemistry, environmental biotechnology and waterprocess engineering.

    Norwegian Language and Culture60 ECTS 1 year programme

    The aim o the programme is to give an introduction to Norwegian language, culture, society and togive the students suf cient knowledge o the language or urther studies in Norway. This intensiveprogramme in Norwegian Language and Culture gives students the language qualications to enter anyuniversity level programme in Norway. Applicants should be aware that this programme requires intenseindividual work and a lot o commitment.The programme commences in August.

    Target group

    The programme targets beginner level students who do not have any prior knowledge o the Norwe-gian language. It is designed or students who are planning to study at the University o Stavanger onbachelor or master level. Please note that depending on number o applicants, young students who

    havent completed an academic degree might be prioritised.

    Learning Outcomes

    The overall aim is to bring the student up to the linguistic level necessary to attend a degree programmein Norwegian at a college or university in Norway. In order to achieve this, the students have to: Obtain a prociency in Norwegian, both written and oral Gain insight into Norwegian language and culture Become amiliar with the Norwegian university and college system

    PhD programmesResearch training at UiS equals a workload o three years, and is applicable or candidates who havecompleted a masters degree.

    The research training consists o courses, independent research in active collaboration with theacademic adviser and other researchers, participation in active national and international researchenvironments, doctoral thesis, doctoral dissertation with a trial lecture and a deence o the thesis. ThePhD degree is granted within all the areas o research that are covered by the eight PhD programmes.

    There is no deadline or applications to the doctoral programmes. Applicants are admittedthroughout the year. Further requirements, inormation, guidelines and application orms can be ound atwww.uis.no/researchtraining

    In order to be admitted to one o our PhD programmes, unding must be secured in advance orapplied or along with the application or admission. You may apply or scholarships rom externalsources o unding, such as the Research Council o Norway or relevant commercial or industry companies.
