Housing & Supplies
1. How can I learn more about campus housing at Fordham University? Most graduate school students find their own housing. There are a number of online resources, such as roommates.com or Craigslist. Most campus housing is apartments, and the Office of Residential Life will help you obtain an apartment by applying online. For complete information on graduate housing on the Fordham Lincoln Center campus and obtaining an apartment, please visit: http://www.fordham.edu/student_affairs/residential_life/lincoln_center/our_residential_offe/graduate_housing/index.asp
For off-campus housing, the Office of Residential Life uses the services of Places4Students.com , which provides a list of available apartments near Fordham. Since international students have no credit history in the US, they either have to prepay the full-year’s rent or get their lease documents cosigned. For more information and the link, please visit: http://www.fordham.edu/student_affairs/residential_life/lincoln_center/our_residential_offe/off_campus_housing_8153.asp Fordham has a number of apartments on 58th Street in midtown Manhattan to house its graduate students. The apartments are conveniently located about 3 blocks from campus in a very safe, doorman building. All apartments come unfurnished; kitchens are equipped with a refrigerator and stove.
For more information about graduate housing contact: Michelle Costantino Graduate Manager at Wilshire Plaza Email: [email protected]
2. How much should a new student expect to pay for an apartment in Manhattan? Where
else besides Manhattan do students live? Most affordable apartments in Manhattan range from $1200-2000 per room, depending on whether it is a one bedroom or multiple bedroom apartment and what part of Manhattan the apartment is located. Many students do not live in Manhattan and commute from Queens, Randall's Island, Brooklyn, Bronx, and New Jersey.

7. How do I apply for a Social Security number? The only way for a student in F-1 or J-1 status to be eligible to apply for a Social Security number is to be employed or have an offer of employment. International students in F-1 or J-1 status are eligible to work on campus. A Social Security number does not grant you permission to work, citizenship or permanent residency, but if you are working in the U.S., you must have a Social Security number. Once you obtain a Social Security number it is your number forever and may be used on subsequent visits to the U.S.
If you have an on-campus employment offer, come to the OIS for instructions on how to apply for a Social Security number.
For complete information on applying for a Social Security number, please visit: http://www.fordham.edu/academics/office_of_the_provos/office_of_internatio/office_for_internati/current_students/employment_resources/applying_for_a_socia_74699.asp
8. Do I have to file tax forms? Yes, Federal tax law requires all students in F or J visa to file a Form 8843 every year you are inside the United States, even if you did not earn any United States income. If you earn income during your stay in New York City, there are four different types of tax with which you must be concerned: United States federal income tax, social security (FICA) and New York State and New York City income tax.

The University does not provide tax advising to American students or staff nor can it offer detailed advice or assistance to foreign nationals enrolled or employed at Fordham. The following is intended to give you a general sense of your obligations under the law and is subject to change without warning.

9. What do I need to know about driver’s licenses & identification cards? While International Students are not required to have a New York State Driver’s License in order to drive in the United States (a license from one’s home country in combination with an international driving permit will suffice), students may choose to apply for a New York State License or Identification Card. However, the DMV can give you a valid ID so that you do not have to carry your passport around to places where identification is needed. In order to apply for a learner’s permit or driver’s license, you will need to prove 6 points of identification including proof of birth (your passport plus additional documents). For more information on points of identification please visit the New York Department of Motor Vehicles www.nydmv.state.ny.us or http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/id44.pdf If you choose not to apply for a New York State Driver’s License, the OIS recommends students always carry their: 1. International driver's license (in English, if possible) 2. International Driving Permit 3. Copy of the Section 250(5) law that states you are NOT a resident (print this page: http://www.fordham.edu/images/student_services/ois/resident.pdf ) 4. The DMV page that states it is legal for non-residents to drive with your non-NYS license (print pages 6-7 from this document: http://www.fordham.edu/images/student_services/ois/nys%20license%20info.pdf
You may also choose to obtain an identification card, which requires you to present your passport, your I-20, your social security card, a major credit card with a photo, submit an application and pay a fee. Please note, this is not a driver’s license.
For additional information please visit the Fordham OIS website on Driver’s Licenses & DMV: http://www.fordham.edu/academics/office_of_the_provos/office_of_internatio/office_for_internati/current_students/drivers_licenses__dm_23633.asp

1. What is the difference between an F-1 student and a J-1 student?
An F-1 student is a person in the U.S. pursuing a full-time academic or language program. The J-
1 Exchange Visitor program is designed to promote mutual understanding between the people of
the U.S. and the people of other countries through educational and cultural exchange. Among the
many categories in the J-1 program, there is a student category, and J-1 students are usually
sponsored by their home government, a U.S. government agency, or by their home or host
university. Students funded solely by personal or family funds do not qualify for J-1 status. In
some instances, they can be placed under a "two-year home residency requirement" which
requires the J-1 visitor to return to his or her home country for two years before becoming eligible
for long-term employment or residency options, including permanent residency, in the U.S.
2. I lost my passport, I-94, any other important documentation. What should I do?
File a police report, notify your country’s consular office, and let the OIS know as soon as
possible.
3. What documents do I need to have when I travel?
The following documents are required for travel and re-entry to the U.S. An international
student's I-20 or DS-2019 must be properly endorsed before traveling outside of the United
InternationalStudentGuidebook
19
States. Please make sure you come by the OIS during appointment hours in order to get a
signature on your form.
1. An unexpired passport valid at least six months into the future
2. An unexpired I-20 or DS-2019 with a travel signature less than 6 months old
3. An unexpired F-1 or J-1 visa stamp valid for further entries into the United States
If you forgot to get your I-20 signed for travel before leaving, or you packed it away in your
suitcase, ask the border officer for an I-515A form. This will allow you to enter the country in F-
1 status; however you must come to the OIS immediately to finish processing your entry. Your I-
94 card will be stamped "F-1" with a specific date, instead of D/S.

StudentEmployment
1. Can I work on or off campus as an international student?
As an international student, there are very specific regulations regarding employment. Before
beginning any job search, make sure to explore the employment options available based on your
immigration status.
International Students have a few options for employment while in the United States. Please be
sure to check with the Office of International Services before doing any employment to ensure
you are staying within Federal regulations.
International students are generally not eligible to work in the US off-campus until they have
completed two terms (9 months) of study in the US. Each student should check their off-campus
employment eligibility with the Office of International Services (OIS).
For information about employment resources, including on-campus jobs, please visit:

2. What is Optional Practical Training (OPT)?
As an F-1 student, you are entitled to up to 12 months of employment in your field. This post-
completion employment authorization is called by regulation Optional Practical Training (OPT).
If you have received 12 months or more of full-time Curricular Practical Training (CPT), while
studying for your degree, you are not eligible for post-completion practical training. Time spent
in pre-completion practical training also is deducted from the 12-month maximum.
You get 12 months practical training for each higher degree you obtain. That includes separate
12-month periods for associate, bachelor’s, master’s and other higher level graduate degrees.
You must complete your 12 months of post-completion OPT within a 14-month period following

3. Can students who are non-US citizens get internships or jobs in New York City or on-
campus?
International students at the graduate school of business can work and receive scholarship
compensation as on-campus graduate assistants if they are full-time students during the given
term that they work. Categorized as scholarships, the full value of a graduate assistantship is
$3,510 for 10 hours/week during the 15 week term or $7,020 for 20 hours/week. They may work
as a GA up to a maximum of 20 hours/ week per term, and up to a maximum of 60 hours/week
equivalent during the course of their studies at Fordham.
There are two types of graduate assistants:
Faculty GAs work directly with a professor. The Office of Admissions will post the entire
Faculty GA scholarship amount to the student's account at the beginning of the term once
paperwork from the faculty member is received.
Administrative GAs work with an administrator or in an administrative office. Most of the
scholarship is credited to a student's tuition account at the beginning of the term. However, by
law, the minimum wage (currently $8.00 per hour must be paid as taxable income if the GA
is working for an administrative area. Therefore, Administrative GAs receive bi-weekly
paychecks for this portion of the GA-ship.

1. If you wish to obtain a Social Security number
Go to OIS and get a form which needs to be filled (both by the student and your supervisor) on
the basis of which they will prepare a letter to present to the Social Security office. Take your
passport and I-20 along to the Social Security office.
2. Appointment with Susie Docarmo

22
Once a Social Security number is obtained, make an appointment with Susie Docarmo (Tel:
(718) 817-4972 Fax: (718) 817-4965 Email:[email protected]). Her office is located in
the Rose Hill campus in the Faculty Memorial Hall building in Room 525. Take with you all the
forms that were given to you to fill out. This is a necessary step because due to varying tax laws,
different tax rates will apply depending on your country of origin, and Susie Docarmo will
ensure that all the paperwork is filed properly. You can take the Ram Van to go to the Rose Hill
Campus (for more information on the Ram Van, please see Section I, question 13).
3. Employee tab in my.fordham account
Once you have signed the paperwork, an employee tab will appear in you’re my.fordham
account along with the “Home” and “Student” tabs. Through these tabs you will be able to
access electronic timesheets which you will complete and submit on a biweekly basis (every
fortnight). Your supervisor will approve them. On these submitted timesheet basis, you will
receive biweekly checks based on the hours worked. International students on financial aid must
be careful because if they exceed their number of hours a week, there may be problems with their
loans. Normally, depending upon whom the student is working for, the hours are flexible and
they can make up hours as needed.

4. Where do I look for an on-campus job?
On-campus employment is limited to twenty hours per week while school is in session but may
increase to full-time during annual school vacations. On-campus employment is defined as
employment performed on the school’s premises, including employment with on-campus
commercial firms, like the bookstore or cafeteria, which provide services for students. Fordham
students may seek on-campus jobs at Rose Hill, Lincoln Center and Tarrytown. A letter of
authorization from the Office of International Students is required.
