LIPI is one of the old research institution in Indonesia LIPI is established in 1967

There are 52 office works spread in Indonesia from west to east Indonesia territory

There are 15 natural laboratories under LIPI coordination that consisted geological , marine, and botanical gardens. Equiped by two Research Vessel

There are of about 1.200 scientists and 500 technicians in LIPI that work in almost all science and technology disciplines from natural, engineering to social sciences

LIPI’S PROFILE

Page 4: International Research Collaboration in Indonesia: …...Hery Harjono Deputy Chairman for Earth Sciences Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) International Research Collaboration

• NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES- Water- Biodiversity

• CLIMATE CHANGES- Paleoclimate- Impact on small Islands- Impact on low land area- Impact on river basins

• NATURAL DISASTER- Earthquake and Tsunami- Land movements

Approach: Multi Disiplinary Approach

LIPI’S FOCUS ON GLOBAL ISSUES

• NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES- Europe, Japan, Korea, USA

• CLIMATE CHANGES- Australia, Europe, USA

• NATURAL DISASTER- Europe, Japan, USA

International Collaboration

Page 6: International Research Collaboration in Indonesia: …...Hery Harjono Deputy Chairman for Earth Sciences Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) International Research Collaboration

• LIPI collaborates with one University/or more universities.- Caltech, IPG Paris, Cambridge Univ, RHIN-Japan, KORDI etc

• LIPI and other national institutes works with more than one universities/Institutes, - JSPS, JST-JICA, Germany etc

• LIPI and other national institutes collaborate with multi- countries. - Study on subduction zone segmentation: The 2004 and 2005 Sumatran Earthquakes [UK, France, Germany, USA, India, Indonesia]

Type of Collaboration

To get scientific understanding in several aspects of science and technology

Main goal of collaboration

Specific goal and activities of collaboration1. Capacity building:

Scientific training;Educational program for Master, Doctorate and Post Doc Program;Exchange visits of scientists; Upgrading of LIPI laboratories

2. Joint activities:

Organizing joint academic conferences; 3. Exchange of data and information

The period of collaboration is depended on the agreement among parties one year or multi years)

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION ON GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES IN SUMATRA

(cont.)

Scientific Results: - Discovery of Mentawai Fault Zone- Discovery of Mentawai Locked Segment (1999)- Mapped of Sumatra Fault Zone (2002)- Mapped Potential Submarine Landslide along Mentawai Fault Zone (2008)- Trace of Paleotsunami in Sumatra

Input for Hazard map of Padang City

Capacity Building:- PhD: 3 (Japanese Universities), 6 (French Univ, 2 from LIPI), 1 (Caltech)- LIPI is considered as strongest capacity on earthquake study in Indonesia.

Two researchers of LIPI and Caltech observed the micro atolin Mentawai Islands of Sumatra. They found several paleo-earthquakesIn the past.

Several segments in front of Sumatra: The MFZ is the Mentawai Fault Zone. The 1797 and the 1833 sources is known as the locked segments. It could be released as a giant earthquake in the future. Two closest cities (Padang and Bengkulu) have prepared to face such a big earthquake and tsunamis. Now, we have

Local SOP development Workshop/Training

Merging school, local community and authorities SOP, and test them through integrated community preparedness exercise/drill

“kentongan”, one of the local tools for tsunami warning is utilized by community and schools, during the exercise/drill

CONCLUDING REMARKS

1. Severe natural changes phenomena occur in several places 2. The processes are complexes and need to be undestand deeply3. To protect our society from such phenomena, international scientific

cooperations are needed
