Principal’s MessageI am delighted to introduce Marist College, an all-girls state integrated school located in the suburb of Mt Albert, only 10 minutes from Central Auckland. Marist College is a highly regarded school where academic achievement and respect for other people are expected. Our NCEA results continue to be well above national average at over 95% at each level, and we also achieve excellent NZQA Scholarship results.

Students strive for personal excellence and staff help all girls develop a love of learning. We are a small school with a maximum roll of 750 from Years 7 to 13 (age 10-19 years), so all our students are personally known and supported.

We understand the learning needs of girls and provide a safe and friendly environment with excellent facilities that builds confidence in our students to give them the best opportunities in their education and future choices. Our students come from a wide variety of ethnicities and we promote inclusion and celebrate our cultural diversity.

Our strengths in Arts, Music and Drama along with great results in English, Mathematics and Sciences has been achieved because it is recognised that girls learn better in a single sex school environment resulting in success in national examinations. We expect excellence and with our small size we are able to treat students as an individuals.

Marist College has a broad range of subjects across all curriculum areas and over 20 sports as well as several cultural and musical groups. I strongly encourage all students to participate in a sport or cultural group to enhance their overall experience at Marist College.

We prepare our students for entry to Universities within New Zealand and overseas. This is by ensuring educationally powerful connections between students, families and teachers and to promoting a culture of excellence through which all students develop the skills to achieve success as lifelong learners.

International Students of all nationalities are warmly welcomed and do not need to be of Christian faith to attend Marist College. Our students leave Marist College strong, confident, resilient young women prepared for the next stage of their educational journey.

Ma te atua koutou e manaaki. May our God bless us all.

Mrs Monica Johnson Principal

A strong English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department operates in the College. All International Students receive tuition in English language.

New international applicants will be tested for the level of their ability to understand and write English. An acceptable standard of English is required before enrolment is confirmed, as all classes are taught in English.

The ESOL classes operating in Years 11, 12 and 13 are taught by qualified and experienced ESOL teachers. Additional support in English Language is offered to International Students at other year levels.

English Language Proficiency RequirementsInternational students will be tested on arrival to determine or confirm their level of English. Students must have a suitable level of proficiency at each year level before starting a course of full-time study in all subject areas at Marist College.

If a student is below that level, they will study either four or eight hours of English, as well as studying other subjects. As a students’ English language proficiency increases, they will study less English and may then select another core subject.

If a student has a very low English language level, we may suggest they study a full- time English language course at an external provider, prior to commencing at Marist College.

Placement TestsAll new International Students are required to sit placement tests prior to being assigned to a particular level and prior to their course of study being approved.

For placement into Years 9 or 10 International students must sit an English Test. Acceptance into Year 11, 12 or 13 courses is dependant on performance in English and Mathematics placement tests.

Academic Programme

Recognition of Prior LearningAs part of the enrolment process, Marist College will require school reports for two years prior to the application for enrolment. The College may require the student to be tested to confirm the level of prior learning.

Academic reports on file will help with the selection of the students couse subjects and expected levels. The student may also enter a course at a particular level on a trial basis, with review of performance clearly stated. If needed a native speaker will interpret reports and appraise a student’s subject knowledge.

The English Language Programme

Pre-UniversityMarist College has strong links to Universities. Senior students can be prepared for the International English Language Teaching System (IELTS) examination required for entry to Universities.

All senior students will be working towards achieving National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) credits at the appropriate level. They will be expected to enter external examinations in November. Numeracy and literacy is required for entry into New Zealand Universities. Entry to Undergraduate Courses at Auckland and other Universities throughout New Zealand is dependent on gaining the appropriate number of credits in NCEA Level 3.

All International Students complete NCEA EL (English Language) standards in writing, speaking, listening and reading at levels appropriate to their language ability.

“As an international student, I enjoy the life at Marist College. Marist girls are all very welcoming and

always helpful even if they don’t know you.”

“When students encounter New Zealand Education, they’ll grow as individuals, develop the skills and gain the qualifications they need to succeed. Most important of all,

they learn to Think New, like we do.”Education New Zealand

Student Stories

Weichen Zhang (Vivian) I was a Year 13 student at Marist College in 2016. Beijing is my home town where I was born and raised, and now I’ve already been in New Zealand for almost 3 years. As an International Student, I went through a challenging period of time when I first arrived, in my new country. But when I look back now, I appreciate the challenges I’ve experienced and I do feel that coming to Marist College has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.

Before I came here, I received offers from all 3 high schools that I applied for, including Marist College, another girls’ school and a co-ed school. Even though I was not Catholic, I made up my mind to come to Marist as my family believed that people who have a religion would be more kind. Indeed, the Students at Marist College all have very good manners. They are polite and friendly and they would never leave you alone in class discussions.

The staff at Marist are caring and helpful as well. I’ve grown from a shy little girl to a leader in Year 13 and I have high achievements in all my subjects with great help from teachers and local students. I appreciate that!

Marist College also has helped me to find my passion in life. Now I’ve received offers of BA Media from my dream schools in England. I’ve learnt so much from Marist both academically and spiritually. I believe if you come to Marist, you can also learn how strong you can be, that you are capable to achieve anything that you want.

Marist College

Honoka Fujita – JapanI went to New Zealand in January 2016 for a year study programme at Marist College. I really like Marist College because all students and teachers are nice. Marist College’s family spirit means they care for each other like a real big family. That was surprising for me because I have never experienced this at school in Japan. So that’s why I had good friends at Marist College who always helped me in every situation.

When I went to surfing camp, I was nervous and worried about everything because it was first time for me to leave my host family and it was early in the first term. My English skills were not good as now, and there were many people who I had not talked to. However they knew me, although I did not know some of their names and they helped me a lot. Like when teacher and/or instructor was instructing, they said to use easy English, so I could understand. The Surf Camp is one of my best memories in New Zealand.

I joined the basketball team, there were a few Year 12 students and no international students. We had game each week, and each time I was on the court, my teammates cheered me. So we became good friends. And I appreciated this club activity.

I am so happy that I was a Marist College student. I learned not only English but also how New Zealanders live. My experience at Marist College was very good for me and I didn’t want to leave the school.

The students and teachers always helped me, so they help you as well.

FacilitiesRenovated in 2012, our magnificent facilities provide quality resources enabling optimum teaching and learning conditions. All classrooms have computer audio-visual equipment, with acoustic wall enhancements offering a quiet learning environment. There is full wifi connectivity throughout the school.

There is a dedicated classroom and kitchen facilities for our International Students to make their own space and enjoy the company of others in similar situations.

We enjoy a full-sized gymnasium plus performing arts facilities, including a dance room, two drama rooms that can merge into one large space, and specialist music facilities. There is also a well-equipped library with online services, quality science laboratories and computer rooms. To support our outside activities we have both an artificial turf area and a grassed sports area.

“It’s nice to join with Kiwi girls, but it is also nice to have a special room for international students so

that we can relax and talk together.”

Pastoral Care

All international students at Marist College are cared for by several staff members.

• The Deans have particular pastoral responsibilities for students in their appointed year level and monitor academic progress.

• The Tutor Teacher has responsibility for their whanau class of students.

• The International Student Teacher has an overseeing care for International Students and a primary responsibility for English language achievement.

• The Principal welcomes any pastoral concerns relating to student progress.

• The International Manager looks after homestay arrangements and is the first point of contact for any pastoral concerns.

Accommodation Options All International Students at Marist College must be in College approved accommodation under appropriate supervision. There are three options of accommodation; homestay, living with a parent and living with a designated caregiver.

Homestays are the preferred option at Marist College. There are many families in the Marist College community who welcome international students and have girls attending the College with whom International Students can readily relate.

HomestayLiving in a homestay arranged by Marist College, the student can improve their English language skills and experience the kiwi way of life. These families are carefully selected and provide a high standard of care. All homestay hosts are visited in their homes where the room on offer and home are inspected.

Our homestay families are generally from the wider Marist College and local community. They are carefully monitored and International students met with regularly to ensure that everyone has a positive

experience. Students will always have their own fully furnished room, all meals including lunch to bring to school is provided and laundry is done. Most of our homestays are within walking distance to school or on a good transport route.

Living with ParentsImmigration NZ allows parents to live with and care for their child while they study in New Zealand. It is expected that parents will remain in New Zealand while their daughter attends Marist College and an appropriate visa for the parent needs to be shown. It is the parent’s responsibility to provide the College with their local address and advise any changes of living situation or circumstances.

Designated CaregiversA designated caregiver is a relative or close family friend known by the student’s parents and committed to staying with the student for the whole of her time at Marist College. In order to be approved, the designated caregiver agrees to provide references, complete police vetting and meet with the homestay coordinator in their home. The parent will be required to complete a Designated Caregiver Indemnity Statement.

GuardianAll International Students are required to have a guardian living in New Zealand. Parents may nominate a caregiver/guardian. Alternatively, Marist College can arrange guardianship if required. There is an additional fee for providing a guardian.

Student Welfare

Our History and ValuesThe Marist tradition of education originated in France in the early 19th Century with Jean-Claude Colin and Marcellin Champagnat. Jeanne Marie Chavoin and Jean-Claude Colin founded the Marist Sisters. The Marist Sisters established Marist College in Mt Albert in 1928, with the order still living on-site.

We have a strong alumni community and many of our girls are daughters of past students. The Marist Sisters and their Christian faith forms the basis of all we do, this includes our core beliefs of family and a caring and supportive school which strives for excellence and developing skills for life.

The Marist College WayStudents are at the centre of all that we do. We aim to know students personally in order that they fulfil their true potential in all areas.

Marist College has a culture of pride and respect. We all have the right to learn and teach without interruption in a safe environment and be treated with respect, to have pride in ourselves, our culture and our school. Marist College expects each student to co-operate fully by taking responsibility for her own progress through preparation for, and participation in, all classes she attends.

“There is outstanding strength of Special Character at Marist College

- It is real, pervasive and alive. Marist is rightly seen as a leader

among Catholic schools.”(Catholic Character Review Report)
