Swansea University is ambitious for its

students, staff, and for the institution as

a whole. We are on a steep upward

trajectory making rapid progress towards

our aspiration of being one of the top

200 universities in the world by our

centenary in 2020.

Our University community thrives on exploration and discovery, and offers the right balance of excellent teaching and research, matched by an enviable quality of life.

We are comfortably one of the top 30 research intensive universities in the UK in the recent government-sponsored review of the quality of research in every university (The Research Excellence Framework – REF2014). Ninety per cent of Swansea’s research was judged to be internationally excellent in its impact and a third of our research is now classed as world-leading. This means that our students are taught by, and work alongside, some of the best academic staff in the country and even the world.

We aim to deliver an outstanding student experience that provides a lifetime of fantastic memories, matched by courses which equip you with high-level skills and boost your employability.

The momentum we have gained as one of the UK’s most ambitious, research-led universities has made us a natural university of choice for a great many talented students, and the increases in applications to study here are a clear indication of our success.

I believe that we’ve struck the right balance of excellent teaching and research, matched by a superb quality of life and our exciting campus development plans will herald a new era for the University.

I hope you’ll join us.

What can a research-led university offer students?research-led teachingTeaching at all levels is research-led or research informed, meaning that courses will incorporate the latest research and be relevant to your career. Our academic departments are in touch with breaking developments in their field which make for dynamic and interesting courses that cannot be found in a text book.

Studying in a research-led university means that you benefit from the knowledge and skills of internationally renowned academics at the top of their game; they can explain material more easily and have a shared passion and enthusiasm for the subject.

recognitionDuring your time at Swansea University you will have access to some of the greatest minds in your chosen field. This expertise is recognised across the globe in both the workplace and academic circles.

This recognition adds credibility to your own qualification and provides you with extensive networking opportunities.

Investment and facilitiesIn 2013/14 the annual research income was £55 million. Research-led institutions like Swansea attract more funding and investment, which contributes towards excellent facilities essential for cutting-edge research. Students at the University benefit from the use of the latest technologies within their field whilst studying on our campuses.

Benefiting from our world-class researchOur academic staff are research-active, making teaching dynamic, relevant and up-to-date. You can be inspired by the people who have written key texts for your course and learn about new theories and technologies as they are being developed.

Innovative learning and teachingWe are always looking for innovative ways to add value to your learning experience.

The Swansea Academy of Learning and Teaching (SALT) was established in 2009 to ensure we continue to offer an excellent learning experience and make the most of emerging teaching technologies.

We already use a wide range of methods and technologies, such as scenario simulations, blogs, podcasts, social networking and interactive lectures.

Creating employable Graduates Our long history of working closely with industry ensures our degrees meet employers’ needs. A degree is important for getting a great job, but employers look for much more than a degree when choosing graduates to employ. Gaining experience and developing skills whilst studying and during vacation periods will give you a competitive edge.

We are dedicated to making our students more employable and creating global graduates through our degrees. Swansea University provides opportunities for all students, which include:

What was your immediate reaction when you found out you got this placement?

It’s a really good opportunity for me to gain experience from someone who’s an investor and entrepreneur. It’s the type of field I want to go into and a great opportunity for me!

How do you think the experience will benefit you? In confidence, skills, etc?

I feel I will learn a lot about cultural differences, as I will get to meet new people and ideas. Hopefully, it will help me grow as an individual.

Do you think that work experience is a fundamental attribute to obtaining a job in this current climate and how do you think this opportunity will affect your future career prospects?

I think it’s very important for students to get work experience while you’re still studying, even in first year you should start looking at job opportunities, as you don’t know where or when you will get a job. I think it will help my CV immensely to be working with such a powerful figure as Sir Terry Matthews. Hopefully, it will put me on a different level from everybody else. I think the University should definitely continue to facilitate a program whereby local firms or companies get involved, as it really does help. Having good grades isn’t everything and experience helps differentiate you from the rest!

Simba Khatai is 21 and studied Business and Economics. He travelled to Canada to visit Sir Terry Matthews, Wales’ first billionaire and Swansea Alumnus who owns the IT company Wesley Clover.

Receiving the great news to spend a week on the new Swansea University campus construction site with VINCI had me completely excited and keen to make the best out of the five days I had been offered. Arriving to site at around 7:30 am every morning, the day would start with a nice informative chat with one of the seniors working on site, varying from the project director, construction manager to the structural and drainage engineers. This interesting internship played a great part in training and enhancing my experiences in various practical skills. I spent five hours a day surveying different blocks on site such as the future residential buildings, taking measurements for a number of buildings and also levelling certain areas where the future academic buildings were going to be placed. The great experience has certainly developed my team work ability, time management and quick decision-making.

After reviewing information on Swansea University’s location, and the course’s content and reputation, I decided that Swansea was the ideal place for me to study.“

Adam decided to transfer to a four year course, to enable him to take up the opportunity of a year’s study abroad, which he spent at the University of New South Wales in Australia.

“As well as having a transformational effect on me personally, entering the global jobs market with experience of living and studying in three different countries on three different continents will hopefully make me eminently more employable than if I had continued my studies in Hong Kong.

Adam Chan – Student Case Study

Adam first came to Swansea in 2011 as an international student from Hong Kong, to undertake a three year BSc Psychology degree course in the Department of Psychology. Adam said:

GoFurther@SwanseaUniversity

At Swansea, we offer you more than just a UK-based educational experience. With links to more than one hundred partner universities and organisations in exciting destinations around the world, Swansea University aims to offer you the opportunity to go global and develop transferable skills to help your future career.

Employers acknowledge that spending time abroad, as part of a study, work or cultural placement:

• Builds confidence, self-awareness and maturity

• Develops a global perspective

• Facilitates adaptability to new environments and challenges

• Improves communication and language skills

My time abroad was spent in Gothenburg, interning at Volvo Car Corporation in their Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Climate department. My internship was a truly enriching experience both professionally and personally. With CFD analysis, I have gained a wealth of knowledge on a very modern and popular engineering technique, and have seen its application in corporate-scale cases today. I worked alongside many colleagues, from different departments, and of all ages and backgrounds, which furthered my professional development and ability to communicate with others. Ultimately, I truly believe learning from other cultures has been an invaluable experience.

Jack Hailstone – Student Case Study

Jack is studying Chemical Engineering at Swansea. He spent a semester in Sweden on a work placement as part of his degree.

Wales is a proud and passionate nation.

People in Wales have a strong sense of its history and is a cultural experience unique from traditional Britain. Welsh is the oldest living language in Europe – we offer Welsh for Beginners classes if you want to learn.

We have a rich history that is shown in our landscape.

We’ve been conquered by the Celts, the Romans, the Saxons and the Vikings! We’ve looked after the remains of our past. You’ll discover ancient castles where famous battles were fought, fortresses built to keep invaders at bay, as well as more modern records of the industrial revolution, like our coal mines.

Wales gives you an added cultural experience.

All of our national museums and art galleries are free to enter, so you can soak up our history and learn what it means to be Welsh, and have a unique experience in the UK.

SHorT-TerM STUDy ProGrAMMeS AT SWAnSeA UnIverSITy

I choose Swansea because I had always been fascinated about the United Kingdom both the history and culture. I decided that I wanted to choose a place where I could fully immerse myself into the culture and learn about a culture different from my own. My Study Abroad Advisor in Massachusetts also recommended Swansea as a study abroad destination. The academics were very different from my home university which required weekly or daily assignments, whereas most of my grades at Swansea University were dependant on one midterm paper and a final exam which I found nice because it gave me more free time to explore Swansea. Swansea University even provided me with a study abroad buddy who was able to show me around Swansea and teach me all about the city and university.

Samantha Hoffman – Incoming Exchange Student

Samantha came to Swansea in the Spring of 2013 from the University of Massachusetts, USA.

When I was in my third year at my home university I got the opportunity to study at Swansea University. After discussing the idea with my family I decided to spend a year as a visiting student at Swansea and enjoyed it so much that after completing my undergraduate course I choose to return to Swansea to complete a Masters degree in Childhood Studies. The learning experience in Swansea University has inspired me to pursue my academic goals! I can really recommended Swansea University as a study abroad destination, it has provided me with first-class learning resources and professional and helpful teachers. The student support services in Swansea University have also been great and have helped me adapt to life in the UK. Hey guys, be brave! Take a step towards a new exciting life!

Di Yang – Visiting Student

Di initially came to Swansea University as a visiting student from Shandong Normal University, China.

The School’s courses combine academic knowledge with a practical perspective to allow students to engage with industry to see how their acquired knowledge is applicable to the real world. The School of Management has an excellent track record of placing students with multinational companies, an 90% graduate employment rate and an in-house careers and placements service to help and support students in their future endeavours.

Key Features of Courses

Students interested in studying a PhD in accounting or finance are able to apply to study their PhD in the following department:

Section for Accounting, Finance and Economics (SAFE)

This section houses our resources in accounting, finance, economics and econometrics. The linking logic is that all of these disciplines share an analytical framework and focus on the measurability of organisational outcomes. The section works closely with professional bodies including the Chartered Financial Adviser (CFA), the Institute of Financial Services (ifs), the Association of Certified and Chartered Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). The section is currently working on a range of exciting projects including the application of Hawkes processes to analyse a range of issues in finance, including asset pricing and the calculation of insurance premiums; exploration of housing market dynamics within the UK; the modelling and analysis of financial market volatility and risk using high-frequency international data; and the analysis and extension of conventional quantitative tools and techniques in response to the volatility exhibited by financial series.

The School of Management has a thriving community research and provides a supportive and friendly environment in which to pursue PhD studies.

Our PhD students are based in a dedicated Graduate Research Centre; complete with office space, a common room and kitchen facilities. An integral part of our academic community, PhD students work closely with, and are supported by, academic staff within the School.

Students interested in studying a PhD in business are able to apply to study their PhD in the following section:

Marketing, International Business and Strategy Section (MIBSS)

This section contains resources and expertise: marketing (including consumer economics and internal marketing), international business (including international and development economics), and strategy (including some elements of macroeconomics and business/government policy). The linking logic is that these disciplines focus on the outward-looking aspects of organisational behaviours.

Current research projects include strategic sales force management, emotional confidence (using functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure changes in activity in the cognitive and emotional parts of the brain), the role of experiential marketing in the retail sector, and the use of marketing techniques in the non-profit sector.

Management and Systems Section (MASS)

This section is home to our expertise in: operations management, supply chain management, human resource management, information systems, business analytics and enterprise. The linking logic is that these areas share a focus on the internal operations of organizations and new enterprises. Current research projects include: analysis of large datasets with Companies House; studies of intra-preneurship in large organisations in the United States, lean operations in the public sector, and the challenges of new consumer technologies such as social media and mobile payments.

MPhil/PhD Heath Psychology Psychology research is organised around three broad themes:

• Brain and Behaviour• Cognition and Perception • Clinical and Health Psychology

These themes support smaller, emerging interests in learning and behaviour, and evolutionary behavioural science.

There is a long tradition of Psychology research excellence at Swansea, having established internationally renowned psychopharmacology, nutrition, human performance, and sleep laboratories. Current research strengths in cognitive and clinical neuroscience look set to continue this success for many years to come. All academic staff in Psychology are active researchers and many are internationally recognised in their areas of expertise. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 44% of our research was judged to be world leading (4*). We were one of only four psychology departments to achieve a 100% 4* rating (maximum possible) for the reach and significance of its work.

The Department of Psychology participates in the University’s interdisciplinary Language Research Centre and is also a constituent member of the Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, a research initiative to enhance collaborations in neuroscience.
