Welcome to theUniversity of the Highlands and Islands,Perth CollegeSituated in the very heart of Scotland, Perth College UHI boasts a lively student campus in a thriving and

dynamic city with a fascinating history. With numerous restaurants, cafes and an award-winning concert hall,

Perth has a vibrant environment yet remains one of the friendliest and safest cities in the UK. In July 2012, Perth

was granted city status to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

In the centre of Scotland, Perth is easy to reach by car, train or bus. Whichever way you travel, you will see some

of the country’s most beautiful scenery and have access to the area’s rich and colourful history. There is a good

range of shops, restaurants, pubs and entertainment including a theatre, cinema and concert hall and live music.

If you are interested in sports, Perth and its surrounds can cater for an exhaustive list which includes tennis,

cricket, badminton, football, golf, horse-riding, adventure sports, athletics, cycling, swimming, watersports, fishing

and ice skating.

Walking around the city is a pleasure. It is safe and friendly and there are lovely walks through parks, along the

river and in the nearby hills, as well as a good city bus service. Perth has many beautiful parks and gardens and

wins awards every year for its colourful floral displays. National surveys regularly rate the city of Perth as among

the best places to live in the UK.

Scotland is well-known for possessing dramatic scenery and spectacular culture and traditions, which makes it

makes an unforgettable place to visit.

Perth College is proud to be a partner in the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), along with 12 other colleges

and internationally renowned research centres.

The only university based in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, the partnership allows students to access

everything from Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) to degrees, post graduate

study, research and professional qualifications.

Each institution has its own character and contributes to the distinctive organisation that is the University of

theHighlands and Islands. Some are relatively large colleges in the urban centres of the region such as Perth, Elgin

and Inverness. Others are smaller institutions, including some whose primary focus is on research. All, however,

have a student-centred culture and an individual approach to student learning. In addition to the main campuses,

UHI also provides educational opportunities through a network of more than 50 learning centres located

throughout the Highlands and Islands, Moray and Perthshire.

The partnership makes it easier for people to take part in quality higher education across the

region. There is a diverse range of courses on offer, many specialist programmes taking

advantage of our region’s unique environment, landscape and culture.

Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited our

campus in July 2012, as part of her Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

In 2013, HRH The Princess Royal visited the college as

Chancellor of the University of the Highlands and Islands

(UHI). The Chancellor is the titular head of the University and

The Princess Royal’s role is both ceremonial and ambassadorial,

occasionally participating in conferring degrees at graduations

as well as representing the University in the UK and overseas.

From your first day in College, our International Induction Programme will ensure that you have all the information you

need to settle into your studies and your new life in Perth. If you are planning to find a part-time job, we will help you to

apply for a national insurance number and give you advice on when, where and how to find a suitable job.

When you have settled into your classes, we will invite you to join our international students’ social programme.

This will give you the opportunity to visit interesting and historical places around Scotland as well as taking part in fun

activities such as 10-pin bowling, rock-climbing and kayaking. In the Easter and October breaks, we offer a residential

excursion where you will spend three days exploring further afield into the Highlands and Islands.

The International Centre is on the first floor of the Webster Building in the centre of the campus and you can drop

in any time to speak to one of the team if you need advice on visa issues including visa extensions, accommodation,

English language support, local information, work regulations, opening bank accounts or any other issues. If we cannot

help directly we can point you in the direction of someone who can.

In addition to the support offered by the team at Perth College International Centre, there is support available for

international students through other agencies. One such agency is MEAD.

Established in 2010, MEAD is a multi-agency initiative supporting black and minority ethnic and migrant communities in

Perth and Kinross, as part of the Perth & Kinross Association of Voluntary Service. Widely recognised in Scotland as an

inspirational project in its field. MEAD delivers services for people on areas such as multi lingual information and advice,

advocacy and case work, well-being and engagement in social activities.

Getting Involved in College Life

Perth College UHI is a diverse community with students of all age groups and from a wide variety of places, countries

and backgrounds. This is reflected in the exciting range of social activities that take place each year. You can join us in

celebrating events such as Chinese New Year, Diwali, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. These take place across campus

and in the Union which is the main social space for students’ to relax. We also run live music events, freshers and

student parties, wellbeing and other student-led events.

We feel it is important for our students to be involved in all aspects of college life. Our Students’ Association has

various roles available for students, both paid and voluntary. We have an active Student Representative Council. Every

class elects a representative and students are consulted widely on college business and life.

Many of our students take advantage of the opportunities available outwith their course. You may be interested in

becoming a volunteer, helping to organise an event, or setting up a new club or society. However you get involved, you

will enhance your skills and confidence as well as having fun and contributing to making a difference.

Employability Centre and Careers

Our Employability Centre aims to help students plan their careers and promote themselves effectively when

looking for work. This can include help with interview techniques, drawing up CVs, filling in application forms or

even just finding vacancies in the first place. In addition, our job shop gives students access to a wide range of local,

part-time jobs. Just drop in to our Employability Centre, on the ground floor of the Brahan building, on the way to the

Food Court, to take advantage of these and many other resources.

Perth College UHI has a strong working relationship with the local community and provides many business and

employment opportunities with local companies. Through employer engagement, students receive the best possible

training for their sector, and we help them to work closely with future employers to develop a high and relevant skillset

suited to their chosen career.

Study for a Semester as Part ofYour Degree AbroadThe University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) offers an opportunity for students from all over the world to

complete a part of their degree studies in this beautiful part of Scotland. We are pleased to cater for students who

wish to spend either a single semester or a full academic year with us.

As a study abroad student you can tailor your learning according to your academic background and requirements.

We have a diverse range of courses: some of which are truly unique.

Choosing ModulesModules are single course units: at UHI students usually take four modules in one semester. Our full-time degree

students are required to take most of the modules from within their specific area of study (a course): for example,

Visual Communications, Music Business or Computing. We advise Study Abroad students to follow this path as well

(that way you can integrate better with your fellow UHI students), however it is also possible to take modules from

different courses. Sometimes, if the module is delivered from a different campus, you may join classes by video

conferencing.

Academic CalendarOur academic calendar is divided into 2 semesters: semester 1 starts in the middle of September and continues to the

end of January; semester 2 starts in February and finishes in early June. There is a short term break from classes part-

way through the semester.

If you study with us in semester 1 only and your home institution requires you to be back in January, we can make

special arrangements for your assessments to be made before Christmas break. Please make sure you let us know at

the stage of applying.

Academic CreditsOne UHI module earns 15 SCQF credit points. UHI full-time students will therefore normally achieve 60 SCQF credit

points in one semester. This equates to 30 ECTS credits.

Academic TranscriptsAt the end of your studies we will issue an official transcript. We normally issue these in the middle of February and in

the middle of June, once the Exam Board approved marks.

Centre for Mountain Studies

The Centre for Mountain Studies (CMS) was established in 2000, and is recognised globally as a centre of excellence

on sustainable development in mountain regions. The Centre’s Director is Professor Martin Price, the first British

scientist to receive the prestigious King Albert Mountain Award, in 2012, for his mountain research and publications.

With a focus on mountain environments and the people who depend on them, the staff of the CMS aim to undertake

research and consistently deliver training of the highest quality.

The CMS offers a unique, online MSc in Sustainable Mountain Development. Individual modules deal with topics

relating to social, economic, environmental and professional development issues in mountain areas. Former students

have successfully developed their careers as environmental and rural development consultants and researchers, making

impacts in both local and international contexts. A Moncrieff Scholarship for the MSc is available.

Air Service Training (AST)

Air Service Training Ltd has been providing training for two of the world’s most demanding

professions; pilots and aircraft engineers, for over 83 years.

Formed in 1931, AST has had a long and successful history of providing pilot and engineer training and consultancy

for the world’s airlines, maintenance organisations and military formations. The company is approved under the

European Aviation Safety Agency Part-147 and Part-FCL regulations to provide training and examinations to meet the

appropriate regulatory requirements.

Since coming into ownership of Perth College UHI in 1996, the two organisations have developed and delivered

successful programmes in aircraft engineering over a wide range of levels, from NQ to MBA.

Language School

The Language School at Perth College UHI has been providing English Language tuition for over 30 years and has

British Council accreditation. We offer a range of programmes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to

help you improve your English for work, study, participation in UK life, and international communication.

We offer a full-time programme over the academic year, from September to June. Course details are on our website

at www.perth.uhi.ac.uk/international/Language-School. Funding is available for a limited number of local students,

while fee-paying students can apply to join the course for two weeks or more. Other options include short courses for

EU students running throughout the academic year and evening classes lasting three months, beginning September,

January and April. We also run a Summer School in July and August. You will have the support of our well-qualified

teaching staff, and get help with welfare and support issues such as visas and accommodation from the International

Centre at Perth College UHI. Perth College UHI is an Authorised Centre for Cambridge English Language Assessment

and runs Cambridge examinations in June (normally KET, PET, FCE and CAE).

Research

As a partner in the University of the Highlands and Islands, our research and scholarship activity is core to providing an

excellent learning and teaching experience to our students. This key strand of our work is driven by Research Degree

Awarding Powers application and the Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission.

We are proud of our Research Centre, the Centre for Mountain Studies, our research-focused staff and the breadth

of the application of their work. Our academic and support staff also show considerable engagement with research

and scholarship across a range of activities. The work of our students is also key to the vibrancy of the college as

we develop ‘research-mindedness’, ‘intellectual curiosity’ and ‘research-orientation’ as core graduate attributes,

showcased in Degree shows. We aim to develop these skills across all SCQF levels to the benefit of the student

learning experience, academic skills development and employability.

Recent projects include: Aircraft Engineering staff addressing the concepts of research in today’s environment;

initiating a research culture within the staff of the audio department; research being undertaking with families living

with dementia, believed to be the only Alzheimer family study in the UK; a study on student achievement and mental

toughness.

Our Scholarship Scheme helps you achieve your full potential. Funding is provided by Perth College Development

Trust, with donations made by entrepreneurial businesses and individuals who are willing to invest in Scotland’s talent

and economic future.

With a range of scholarships available to students, each award varies according to the benefactor’s wishes. Some offer

a financial reward, whilst others pay for expenses towards work experience in prestigious locations within the student’s

chosen field. Other awards provide support to students through mentoring.

Accommodation

We understand that moving to a new country to study can be a daunting experience but helping you to find

somewhere to live where you will comfortable and happy is important to us.

Our student residences provide safe, secure and comfortable accommodation in self-catering and fully furnished flats

for 72 students. The accommodation is divided into 16 secure flats. Each has its own kitchen, dining and living area and

either single or twin bedrooms, with their own en-suite bathroom. It’s a very sociable place to live, and students who

have stayed there tell us how much they enjoyed it.

Our Homestay Scheme offers you an opportunity to enjoy the enriching and rewarding experience of living with a

local family. As part of their experience here in Scotland, students enjoy staying with local families and getting a true

insight into the local culture and our way of living. Many of our students have remained in contact with their host family

long after returning to their home country. Homestay accommodation is available on a room only or half-board (bed,

breakfast and evening meal) basis.

If you would prefer to live in privately rented accommodation, in an apartment in the city of Perth, which is about a 20

minute walk from the campus, we can help you with information to make the right choices.

Guide to Qualifications and Study MethodsPerth College UHI offers UHI degrees through UHI and programmes certificated by a range of other professional

bodies such as City & Guilds, Chartered Management Institute and the British Computer Society.

UHI DegreesSCQF Level 7–11Bachelors, Masters and Postgraduate degrees are available at Perth College UHI in a range of subjects. The benefits of our courses are that you can either enrol directly or progress to them through NQ, HNC, and HND courses in the relevant subjects. Degrees can be studied through a range of flexible learning options, such as full-time, part-time and distance and online learning.

Industry and Vocational QualificationsWe are proud of our reputation for delivering a host of industry-led qualifications, from professional cookery and hairdressing to motor vehicle engineering and the Chartered Management Institute. You can earn these qualifications through time split between coming to college and at your workplace. Vocational qualifications are based on evidence of the way you do your job, and are designed to help in your career while encouraging you to go on to further learning. Standards are set by industry training organisations and other awarding bodies appointed by the Government, and range from foundation training to senior management development. We also offer a range of qualifications from other UK awarding bodies, including City & Guilds, to meet the needs of individuals, employers and organisations.

Study MethodsDepending on your course of study, you may use a variety of learning technologies such as:

Face-to-face: Traditional classroom teaching.

Work Placements: Where possible, we offer work placements, giving students a chance to develop their employability skills within a real environment.

VC (video conference): Using cameras and microphones, this technology allows staff and students to see and hear each other across a network, and also to share common learning resources and materials. A VC can connect UHI campuses or sites anywhere that have the right technology.

VLE (virtual learning environment): This web-based system enables you to access learning resources, online guidance and support, and access and submit assessments. You can also communicate with staff and other students through discussion boards or live “chat”.

Scottish Credit and Qualifications FrameworkThis table shows how the Scottish qualifications relate to each other and how you can progress through the framework.

Teaching at universities in the UK may be less formal than you are used to at home. You will have a mix of lectures, tutorials, seminars and will also be expected to undertake independent study.

Lectures are delivered to large groups and you will be expected to listen and take notes. Tutorials and seminars will be in smaller groups and give you the opportunity to discuss the subject with fellow students, with guidance from the tutor. Independent Study means that you are expected to study on your own. This is to encourage you to consider and develop your own ideas using materials and textbooks as advised by your tutor.

Visa requirementsIf you are a national of a country which requires a visa to study in the UK, your unconditional offer letter will contain a CAS. What Will my Visa Allow?A Tier 4 General Student visa allows overseas students to live and study in the UK for the duration of their course. Students with this visa are permitted to undertake a course-related work placement during their stay and can also work part time during term time (10 or 20 hours a week), and full time during the holidays.

How Can I Get a Visa?To get permission to come to the UK to study you need to apply for a Tier 4 Visa. You can download the form and guidance notes from: www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/ howtoapply. To get a Visa you will need 40 points to qualify. You earn the points as follows:

Our MBA programme which can be studied full or part-time or on a modular basis aims to provide you with the comprehensive knowledge, skills and understanding to enable you to become a senior manager. You study

The MBA programme consists of modules totalling 180 credits including a dissertation. The taught stage of the full-time programme takes place over two 15-week semesters. The completion of the MBA is secured through a 15,000 word Research Project.

About this course

This course provides either a progression route for those graduating from the BEng (Hons) Aircraft Engineering degree or an opportunity for those with previous academic or industry experience to raise their attainment to a higher level. The course is taught by management and aviation specialists with considerable and varied expertise. Individual modules can be taken as CPD.

You study

The course consists of three stages, the first two of which are made up of three modules,two of these are core modules and the third is chosen from two options. The core modules are: managing operations; corporate and competitive strategy; strategic marketing and quality assurance in aviation. The options for the MBA are: understanding contemporary leadership and management; global business environment; entrepreneurial strategy and business growth and management accounting and finance. This programme is part of an Aviation scheme and an MSc is also available. The completion of the MBA is secured through a Research Project. Course content may be subject to slight variations.

Entry requirements

We ask for an Honours degree, such as Aircraft Engineering, or a professional qualification recognised as being equivalent. Other qualifications will be considered if accompanied by relevant professional experience in the airline industry, for example. About this course

This course represents the second, third and fourth years of the BEng undergraduate programme and provides recognised qualification at Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level. It can lead to options in air transport operations or design. Year 3 further develops knowledge and skills across a mandatory core of aeronautical disciplines. Year 4 develops knowledge and skills to a more complex level across a mandatory core of aeronautical disciplines. As in Year 3, these mandatory core modules provide the capstone of transferable knowledge and skills for application in any engineering sector of the aviation industry. In semester 2 of Year 4, further electives are available to allow students to build on their specialisations developed in Year 3.

You study

In the BEng, four core modules are studied: avionics; aircraft structural mechanics and aerothermodynamics; airframe and propulsion systems; aviation business and management. Two electives are also studied which will determine whether you follow a design or operations route. Your chosen route in Year 3 will continue in Year 4. Entry requirements

You should have achieved the HNC in Aircraft Engineering to gain direct Progression into Year 2 of the BEng programme. Alternatively, you may be able to get credit for access to Year 2 on the basis of credit for other previous learning, attainment and achievement. You should have achieved the BEng (Ord) degree in Aircraft Engineering to gain direct entry to the BEng (Hons) Aircraft Engineering. Direct entry into Year 3 is based on experience and qualifications.

Progression

About this course

This course provides either a progression route for those graduating from the BEng (Hons) Aircraft Engineering degree or an opportunity for those with previous academic or industry experience to raise their attainment to a higher level. Aimed at those who wish to gain additional management knowledge skills for application in the airline industry, including sectors such as ground and flight operations, individual modules can be taken as Continuing Professional Development.

You study

The course consists of three levels: the first two are of three modules, two of which are core modules and the third is chosen from two options. The choice of options determines the final qualification, with technical options leading to the MSc and management options leading to the MBA. Content may be subject to variations.

Core modules for the Pg Cert are: managing operations and corporate and competitive strategy. The options for the MBA are: understanding contemporary leadership and management or global business environments. Options for the MSc are: airline crisis and active safety management or airports and ground handling. Core modules for the Pg Dip are: strategic marketing and quality assurance, safety, risk, legislation and regulation. The options for the MBA are: entrepreneurial strategy and business growth and management, accounting and finance. Options for the MSc are: airline financial accounting, revenue management, pricing and distribution management and airline flight operations and fleet planning. Progression

Successful completion of two core and one optional module leads to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate (Pg Cert). Successful completion of four core and two optional modules leads to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma (Pg Dip). The MSc or MBA (depending on the choice of optional modules) require successful completion of a research project.

About this course

The European Aviation Safety Agency Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Licence is a professional qualification that confers upon its holder the privilege of certifying aircraft as ‘fit-for-service’. The licence has discrete Categories for differing aircraft types and modes of employment, these cover Mechanic or Technician level which are then subdivided into specific licences for aeroplanes, helicopters and avionics.

The course covers all aspects of study for the modern musician, including performance, composition, education, production, research, management and community arts. You should have a HNC Music (15 credits) plus a B pass in a graded unit. You should be able to read music to a reasonable level and have two Highers or equivalent. About this course

The MMus Music programme will provide an opportunity for learners to develop their professional skills in one of two fields: Popular Musicology or Composition for Film, TV and Media. These programmes prepare graduates for the next stage in their careers, whether further academic or professional study, or entering /returning into employment in a range of fields. It will produce graduates with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of their chosen pathway in musical study/practice, informed by current scholarship and research, including a critical awareness of current issues. Students attend a range of external conferences, performances and workshops and have the opportunity to participate in external collaborations with other organisations and individuals throughout their study.

You study

Students who choose the Popular Musicology route will study a range of modules which are designed to allow students to develop an individual research profile and professional skills in musicological study. Modules include: Contemporary Musicology Issues and Analysis; Research in Context: External Engagement; Contemporary Music Journalism; Music: Power and Protest; Film, TV and Media Musicology; Highland Voices – Music and Song; Popular Music: Gender and Sexuality and Dissertation.

Students on the Composition route will develop professional skills in composing for film, TV and media and will be involved in a range of external projects. Modules on this strand of the course include; Composition techniques for film, TV and media; Composition in Context– External Engagement, Arranging and Film Scoring, Music Business for Film Composers, Post Production Sound Design, Film, TV and Media Musicology and Major Project.

About this course

This conceptually driven degree will equip students to enter the world of professional design as visual thinkers and problem-solvers. It encourages the development of concept, research, experimentation, analysis and critical awareness. This course will explore the changing concept of visual design and communication and the role of the designer within society. In its many forms, visual communication makes an increasing contribution to the cultural and economic life of contemporary society. Our focus is to provide opportunities for you to develop a clear understanding of the creative design process, techniques and business in order to equip you with the ability to produce powerful and emotive solutions that impact on society.

You study

You will explore topics such as: theory and practice; multidisciplinary visual design; professional practice; research methods and social impact design. The emphasis is on each individual interpreting and contextualising theory and technical skills through a range of practical projects to translate effective messages to the target audience. You will be required to undertake a placement and will be given the opportunity to define your own creative identity and explore future opportunities for meeting the evolving demands of the industry.

An opportunity for national and international study trips enhances the experience.

Year 1: HNC Visual Communication: web design, photography, illustration

Year 2: HND Visual Communication: video, visual research, industry practice

Year 3: (BA) Modules include: Theory and Practice (Visual Design); Creative Design Practice (Visual Design); Research Methods; Professional Practice; and Creative Practice.

About this course

Our full-time, academic-year programme (September – June) helps you learn the English language you need to achieve your goals in study, work, or everyday life. If you are a local resident, you may be able to apply for a funded place. Fee-paying students can apply to join the course for two weeks or more.

The course involves around 18 hours of classroom time per week, spread over four mornings and three afternoons.

You study

Our systematic programme is based on published course-books but also draws on a wide range of additional sources. You take assessments for SQA ESOL Units at an appropriate level and may be prepared for Cambridge ESOL examinations if your English reaches a high enough level. Perth College UHI is a Centre for Cambridge ESOL examinations.

If you achieve a suitable level of English, you may be able to join classes in other subjects in Semester 2. Many of our students attain a level of English which enables them to progress to other college courses the following year.

Materials for self-study are available on the college’s Virtual Learning Environment.

Entry requirements

Funded students must be able to attend the full-time (around 18 hours per week) course for the full ten months and spend additional time studying and revising on a regular basis.

About this course

This Masters course comprises six modules and a dissertation. It is a part-time, on-line, interdisciplinary course created for those with an interest in mountain environments, their people, and their future. The course recognises the growing international attention being given to mountain regions, and is taught by experts from across the UHI network. It aims to meet the needs of mountain communities by bringing together professional skills with economic, social and environmental knowledge, to offer a qualification for practitioners and agency officials working in mountain areas. Individual modules can be taken for Continuing Professional Development, and intermediate awards are available.

You study

You can receive a Postgraduate Certificate by completing three core modules – environmental and social issues in mountain areas; sustainable development; and policy analysis – or a Postgraduate Diploma by completing the three core modules and three optional modules. The MSc requires successful completion of a 15,000 word dissertation in addition to the six modules.

Optional modules: biodiversity management; developing communities, developing potential through placement; people and nature; public engagement in decision making; research methods and techniques; geographical information systems; local economic development; sustainable deer management; sustainable rural land use and energy; sustainable tourism and interpretation; water management. You should allow around ten to twelve hours study time per week per module.

Entry requirements

We normally ask for an Honours degree, or a postgraduate diploma or professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to an Honours degree. Other qualifications may be considered if accompanied by relevant professional experience. You must also have good computing skills (word processing and internet) and access to a computer with broadband.


Graduates can expect to find employment in local and national government Agencies or environment and conservation organisations, as National Park Officers or environmental and rural development consultants, or to continue their studies towards a doctorate. Graduates have gone on to work for a range of employers including the Mountaineering Council of Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland.
