OhioStateandUniversityofSãoPaulo(USP)-EscolaSuperiordeAgricultura(ESALQ)sharealong(50+years)historyofcollaborativeresearchandeducationalcooperation.Beginningin1964,USAIDcontractedwithOSU’sOfficeofInternationalProgramsinAgricultureforaninstitutionaldevelopmentprojectinBrazil,initiallywiththeCollegeofAgriculture(ESALQ)oftheUniversityofSãoPaulo.TheOhioStateprojectwasoneoffoursuchuniversityagreementsinBrazil,thatfocusedonintegratingteaching,researchandextensionactivities;developmentofgraduatelevelcoursesandU.S.stylegraduatedegreeprograms;thedevelopmentofaSchoolofHomeEconomics;andpolicyresearchdevelopment.Underthisproject,16CFAESfacultyundertooklong-termassignmentsatESALQandover75ESALQfacultymembersundertookgraduatedegreeprogramsatOhioState.NewlycreatedgraduatedegreeprogramswerethenfilledandsustainedbyreturningESALQfaculty.Uponterminationofthisfunding,severalothersourcesofUSAIDfundingwereusedtopromotecontinuedcollaborationbetweenOhioStateandESALQandotheragriculturalcollegesandtheBrazilianMinistryofAgriculture,through1989.Overtheentireperiodofthisstrategicrelationship,90OSUfacultymembers

havebeenengagedandover100BrazilianfacultymembershavereceivedadvanceddegreesorspecialtrainingatOhioState.KellyNewlon(Director,CFAESStudyAbroad)overseesastudyabroadprogramattheUniversityofSãoPaulo,ESALQ.TheUniversityofSãoPaulo,ESALQcampus,hashostedasix-weekstudyabroadprogramfor18-20studentsformorethan15years.Theprogramfocusisagriculturaleconomics,ruralsociology,andinternationalstudieswithanemphasisonleadership.Portugueselanguagetrainingisincludedalongwithvariousfieldvisitstoindustries,farms,governmentagencies,etc.OhioState’sprimarypartnerthereisDr.RicardoShirota,aOhioStatealuminAgriculturalEconomics.ThegroupthatattendseachyearistheAlphaZetaPartnersStudentHonorary.PabloJourdan(Professor,DepartmentofHorticultureandCropScience)hashadalongrelationshipwithpartnersinBrazilandhasworkedwiththemextensivelythroughOhioState’sOrnamentalPlantGermplasmCenter(OPGC).Overthelast4years,6Brazilianstudents(2PhD,4undergraduate)from3differentuniversitiesinBrazil(ESALQ,UFLA,Maringa)haveworkedandstudiedasvisitingscholarsattheOPGConvariousaspectsofseedbiology:ClissiaBarboza,PhDcandidateatESALQ,visitingscholaratOPGCfromAugust2013-August2014.Thefollowingpublicationisaresultofthiswork:

CenterforAppliedPlantSciences(CAPS)atOhioStateandUSPsharea40+yearhistoryincollaborativeresearchandeducationalcooperation,includingseveralundergraduateandgraduatestudentexchanges.AcollaborativepartnershipbetweenOhioState,USP,andRutgersUniversityconstitutestheTripartiteCollaborative,whichholdsmeetingseverytwoyearswherefacultyandstudentsmeetinpersontopropeltheirresearchforwardandfindnewwaystocollaborate(http://tripartite.osu.edu/).ErichGrotewold(DirectoroftheCenterforAppliedPlantSciences),alongwithGlauciaSouza(USP),havebeendevelopingtoolstoinvestigategeneregulatorynetworksingrasses,focusingprimarilyonsugarcane.TworesearchersfromDr.Glaucia’slabspentseveralmonthsintheGrotewoldlab,resultinginajointpublication:

showapossiblerelationshipofthispathwaywithoxidativedamagecausedbyaluminum,whichisoneoftheresearchareasinLaboratoryofGeneticsandBiochemistryofPlantscoordinatedbyDr.RicardoAntunesdeAzevedo.BerenicewassupportedbyagrantthatinvolvestheBraziliangovernment(CAPES)andU.S.government(Fulbright),whichallowedforthepartialdevelopmentofherprojectatTheOhioStateUniversityfor9monthsunderthesupervisionofDr.ErichGrotewold.InthelaboratoryofDr.Grotewold,shealsoexaminediftheeffectofaluminumismoreharmfulindarkorinlight,andiftoleranceisinducedinmaizeseedsbypre-treatmentwithaluminumwhengerminationoccursunderthisstress.BobTabita(CenterforAppliedPlantSciences)hascollaboratedwithProfessorHelaineCarrerofUSPtoimproveCO2fixationmetabolisminsugarcane. TomMitchell(Professor,DepartmentofPlantPathology)hasbeenworkingwiththeUniversidadedeSãoPauloandNationalLaboratoryofScienceandTechnologyofBioethanol,Brazil.HehasworkedwithDr.GustavoGoldmanattheFacultyofPharmaceuticalSciencesofRibeirãoPreto,UniversityofSãoPaulo,whoisaknownexpertinfungalbiologyandfunctionalgenomics.Dr.MitchellandDr.Goldmanhavebeencollaboratingfor5yearsnowandhavetwopublicationswithathirdbeingsubmittedshortly.HehasworkedforoveradecadeonthefungusthatcauseshumanApergillosis,themajorhumanrespiratorydiseaseandaleadingcauseofdeathinpeoplewhoareimmunocompromised.IncollaborationwithDr.Mitchell,Dr.Goldman’spostdoctoralresearcherRicardoAlmeidatraveledtoOhioStatetoperformaChIP-seqstudyofacentraltranscriptionfactorinthecalciumsignalingcircuit.ThisworkconfirmedDNAbindingmotifsforthisproteinandelucidatedseveralnewmetabolicpathwaysitregulates.Dr.MitchellisalsoamemberofCAPSatOhioStateandhasvisitedBrazilontworecentoccasionstovisitCAPScollaborators,givelectures,andattendtheopeningoftheOSUGatewayoffice.Dr.MitchellisalsotheChairoftheTranslationalPlantScienceGraduateProgramthathasadualdegreeprogramwiththeUniversidadedeSãoPaulo.SudhirSastry(Professor,DepartmentofFood,Agricultural,andBiologicalEngineering)hascollaboratedextensivelywithfacultyatUSPovertheyearsandrecentlydeliveredalectureatUSPin2014entitled“ThePhysicsandEngineeringofFreshProduceSafety”.

JohnFiner,(Professor,DepartmentofHorticultureandCropScience)hostedAdrianaP.Martinelli,facultymemberinCentrodeEnergiaNuclearnaAgracultura(CENA),“LuizdeQueiroz”UniversityofSãoPaulo,Piracicaba,Brazil.Shehasworkedwiththedevelopmentoftissueculture,transformationandgeneexpressionsystemsforcropplants,especiallysoybeanandsugarcane.Dr.MartinellitookasabbaticalinthelaboratoryofDr.Finerandworkedontheisolationandcharacterizationofasoybean(Glycinemax)polyubiquitin(Gmubi)promoter.Intransgenics,thispromotershowsthestrongestexpressionofanysoybeanpromoterstudiedtodate.Thepromoterhasbeenrequestedbyanddistributedtoacademicandprivatesectorscientistsandisbeingutilizedtoregulatetransgenesforbothbasicandappliedresearch.
