INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY
Dr. Indra Cidambi Offers Reasons Why Participation is Important
New York, NY - August 18, 2016 - On August 31 people from around the world will be participating in
International Overdose Awareness Day in order to raise awareness and enlighten the public of the harmful
consequences of excessive consumption of drugs. According to The United Nations Office on Drugs and
Crime, it was estimated that there were 207,400 drug-related deaths with overdose accounting for more
than half of all those deaths worldwide. This day will provide opportunities for people to publicly mourn for
loved ones, while also showing value to current drug users that they are valued and that they can get help.
Dr. Indra Cidambi a leading Addiction Medicine expert from the Center for Network Therapy shares five
unique ways for individuals to participate in International Overdose Awareness Day:
Social Media- Post on Twitter and Facebook to get people talking about drug overdose. Drug
overdose is a topic that people shy away from, but if they see other people talking about it, many
people will be more willing to get involved.
Host an event- Invite the whole town, get people to come out and show their support for families
and friends who have lost a love one to drug overdose.
Write - This can be an individual or group task, by writing down your story about drug overdose and
how it has affected you can help grow awareness to the people around you of how real drug
overdose is.
Help reduce the stigma- Educate people on what you know about addiction. The best way to deal
with grief is to help spread awareness and educate people.
Wear Silver- Silver is the official color of International Overdose Awareness Day, show your support
for people who have died or have lost someone to drug overdose.
